CAREER EXPLORATION WORKSHEET

(Olguin, 2005)

Complete the mini interest inventory in class.  Review the associated type characteristics (R, I, A, S, E, C) and occupations listed.  Select and write three occupations that are most appealing to you.  For another listing of occupations, log onto the www.prenhall.com/niles website.  Under Chapter 3 click on “Web Link” within the website; then, click on the University of Missouri’s career website.  Based on your typology from the completed mini interest inventory, click on the respective letter codes for more occupational listings.

List the three occupations of interest (you will only explore two of the three):

Next, go to the website for the Occupational Information Network at http://online.onetcenter.org/.  Click on the O*Net Code Descriptor to retrieve your code (codes are typically eight digits long). [Skills Search lists skills that you must select and then the program will link occupations related to the skills checked.  Crosswalk Search is a tool to use if you already have a code (SOC, DOT, MOS, RAIS) to enter into the system program].  Then, hit the back key and click on “Find Occupations” and enter your Standard Occupational Classification Code (SOC); then, click on the job title.  Review the “Summary” report. “Details” gives you the level of importance for each listing below.  “Custom” will allow you to customize your results summary.  Complete the following information, based on the summary page (do not list everything within each section, only list information that you were unaware of):
