Mark Morgan ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In Memoriam, Sylvan Zuercher, 16-Nov-1924 - 24-Nov-2010 Sylvan Zuercher died on Wednesday evening, November 24, 2010 at the VistaCare Hospice in Albuquerque. Sylvan had fought a long battle with congestive heart failure and was disabled by arthritis for many years. He was 86. Opal will have a wake after the first of the year. She will let all of us know the time and place. Sylvan joined Corvairs of New Mexico in 1974. He served three terms as president in 1975-1978 as well as two terms as Secretary, 1979-1980. For years he folded, stamped and mailed the Enchanted Corvairs newsletter. He contributed many tech tips and general interest articles to the newsletter. He devoted countless hours to identifying Corvair part numbers and always was "The Man to See" about any Corvair carburetor maintenance and repair questions. The fine people recruited by Sylvan to join our club are beyond enumeration. Sylvan was the primary founder and driving force behind the club's prestigious Ike Meissner service award. The club honored him with the Meissner Award in 1991 and at the Albuquerque Tri-State event in 2000 he received the Francis Boydston Award. We will miss his faithful attendance at our meetings and his support of all things Corvair. In Sylvan's words in recognizing another member who died, "Blessed are we of the Corvair hobby who were privileged to know you and to fellowship with you." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ December Meeting Notes 12-01-2010 Art Gold THE MEETING was called to order at 6:05pm, with 28 in attendance. OFFICER REPORTS. President - David Huntoon was absent due to surgery. We have no report on his condition at this time. VP Ray Trujillo was Dave's substitute. Ray asked for approval of the previous meeting minutes, and the minutes were approved. Vice President - Ray Trujillo stated that he will be serving as president for the next few weeks until David is up and around. Ray also paid homage to Sylvan Zuercher, who passed away last Wednesday. Ray said the board will be looking for suggestions for activities for the coming year. If there are any suggestions please contact Ray or another officer. Secretary - Art Gold - stated that he has no new business to report. Treasurer - Robert Gold - stated the report of the CNM funds, and they are as follows: Cash account $2,852.03 and Ally $1,178.52 for a total of $4,030.55, plus $275.50 from the bingo night that has not been deposited yet. COMMITTEE REPORTS: Membership - Dave Huntoon was substituted by Pat Hall, who introduced guests Diane and John Pattison who we hope will be joining the club tonight. John showed the club pictures of his two Corvairs, one of which is a drag racer. Another guest: Wendell Walker was present (well recovered from the auto accident which totaled his 1963 Cadillac) and he introduced his son Vance Walker. NM Car Council - no report because the Car Council is in recess for the holidays. Editor - Jim Pittman - stated that the newsletter deadline is on Christmas Eve, December 24th. Jim also said that when he got the news of Sylvan's passing he relayed it by e-mail to all present and many past members and he telephoned those who did not have e-mail. He thanked Russ McDuffie for posting the information on his web site, and Russ said that it was soon picked up by Virtual Vairs. Ruth Boydston reported that Opal Zuercher wants to have a gathering or wake next month in honor of Sylvan. It will probably be at the church where we have had Christmas or Anniversary meetings in the past. Sunshine - Heula Pittman - absent due to surgery - she is doing well. Brenda Stickler reported that things are going well with Santa's elves so far at the SAFE HOUSE drive and children's stockings are concerned. Larry Blair asked if the SAFE HOUSE would accept a cash donation and LeRoy Rogers said to contact Emma Rogers or Lee Reider. The consensus was that yes, they would be happy to accept cash. Merchandise - Vickie Hall - explained her duties as keeper of the merchandise. She stated that she had $20.00 for the treasurer. UP-COMING ACTIVITIES: 12/04/2010 - Christmas party at Roper's Restaurant at 5:00pm, located at 8810 Central SE. That's just east of Wyoming & Central. Please bring your donations for the Safe House to the party. 12/11/2010 - Los Lunas "Route 66 Cruise" begins in Bosque Farms at the Wells Fargo Bank at 1:00pm. Pat Hall said they had attended several times and it was always interesting. Tarmo Sutt recommended it as a way to see more of New Mexico. Tri-State Update: Brenda Stickler wants to have trophies made. She said we still need a chairperson to take care of publicity and coordinate with Red River newspapers, and we need someone to organize the ordering of jacket patches. Guest Mr. Garrecht stated that he is interested in selling Corvairs and some parts that belonged to his son Robert Garrecht. To contact him call 505-270-9709 or 505-884-1231, and if you want to see the cars the address is 2424 Claremont and 2431 Claremont NE (corner of Vassar) in Albuquerque. Larry Yoffee said he has a new website, and would like to put photos of club cars and stories about Corvairs on the website. The website is www.corsaturbo180usa.weebly.com. Larry's e-mail: corsa180@gmail.com. Ray reminded us that we needed to appoint a Membership chair as well as a Car Council Representative for the coming years. Please volunteer for one of these positions. John Wiker showed us a Franklin Mint catalog and told us about their 50th Anniversary 1960 Corvair Monza model. We had no 50/50 and no One-Minute Tech Tip. The meeting was adjourned at 6:48pm. Several members then met at the 66 DINER on Central. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ December Board Meeting Notes 12-15-2010 Art Gold Meeting came to order at 5:03pm. We started with OFFICER REPORTS. President - Dave Huntoon - was absent due to recent heart surgery. Vice President - Ray Trujillo - stated that he would continue substituting for David while he is recovering. Secretary - Art Gold - stated that he received new computing equipment. Art also stated that he will bring sign-in sheets for the general meeting in January. Treasurer - Robert Gold - stated that the accounts possess these funds: Checking $3,266.64 and Ally $1,178.52 for a total of $4,445.16. Robert also stated that, since the Ally account was producing mere pennies of interest each month, and since the account was difficult to access, he recommended that the two accounts be combined to simply our finances. There was a motion to combine the accounts, the motion was seconded, a vote occurred and it passed. COMMITTEE REPORTS: Membership - Dave Huntoon - no report of new members. NM Car Council - there are no meetings until January. It was also stated by John Wiker that he would be willing to assume the duties of NMCCC representative, and Mike Stickler stated that he would serve as alternate. Pat Hall stated that he would assist. Editor - Jim Pittman - stated that the deadline for the newsletter is Friday 12-24-2010. Jim also stated that since he forgot his flash drive, the secretary must email the minutes for the board meeting to him. Jim continued to state that Bill Reider and LeRoy Rogers has started the daunting task to organize and inventory Sylvan's car parts, tools, books and magazines. There will probably be a sale in March. Help may be needed for this undertaking. The specific date is yet to be determined. Jim also stated that he is continuing his plan to construct a Newsletter CD for the CNM members. Sunshine - Heula Pittman - the committee made seven Children's stockings for the Christmas dinner. The Gold children were the only ones present. Vickie and Pat went to the Sanchez home to present Christmas stockings to the Sanchez children and were well received. (Vickie's photos are at the bottom of this page.) Heula reminded us that Ruth Boydston was planning the March Anniversary Party for Furr's on San Mateo at 1:00 on a Sunday. Merchandise - Vickie Hall - stated that she still has items to sell. NEW BUSINESS: 2011 Red River Tri-State Report: Brenda Stickler stated that there is a need for a hostess, and a tech session. There are twenty rooms available still. The cut off for reserving a room is March 30th, 2011. The dinner location is still to be determined. We expect the Tri-State announcement to be placed on the CORSA calendar in January. New Club Award - John Wiker handed out a point system for revamping the award, which at the moment has no name. The board approved the point system, then the discussion dealt with the name of the award: generic, or named for a person? If generic, then it would not hold much interest for the members. If a person, then in a few years we would be back to the same objection, that no one was in the club who remembered the person. There was a motion that we change the name of the award subject to the consensus of the general membership. January 01/05/2011 - General meeting at Highland Senior Center at 6pm. Meissner Award (last one in the current format) nomination forms will be in the January newsletter. 01/15/2011 - CNM Breakfast at Roper's Restaurant on Central at 9:00 AM. February 02/12/2011 - CNM Breakfast. Probably at Sopa's Restaurant, Los Lunas, 9:00AM. 02/??/2010 - Potluck and Rememberance for Sylvan to be held at Church of the Good Shepherd. Details to follow. OLD BUSINESS: The Christmas Party was well attended (38 members and family) and everyone had a good time. Thank you to all who donated items to the Safe House and thank you to Emma Rogers and Lee Reider for organizing the project. Vickie mentioned the excellence of the service at Roper's Restaurant. Meeting adjourned at 6:08pm ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ WALTER HUNTOON Huntoon, Walter 88, died Monday, December 20, 2010. He was born in Elgin, Illinois on March 3, 1922, an only child to Walter (Sr.) and Emily Huntoon and was a life-long Elgin resident. Soon after graduating from Elgin High School in 1940, he worked four years at the Elgin National Watch Co. where he met his future wife, Doris Maynard of Hampshire, Illinois. They were married June 8, 1944, and had three children: David, Carol and Gary (Wanda). He later worked for Ludwig Dairy and retired after thirty-eight years with the company. Walter was an avid reader and history buff, especially enjoying topics about WWII and trains, planes, and cars of his era. He was a really good guy, decent, honest, easy to get along with and a caring, wonderful father who will be dearly missed by his family. Walter is survived by his three children and a granddaughter, Kristin. He was preceded in death by his parents and Doris, his wife of 59 years. A memorial is planned for a future date in March, 2011, at the Laird Funeral Home. I most certainly have been out of the loop this whole month. I wish to thank Ray especially for his work in my absence and the board members for their understanding. I hope to be back to near normal in a few weeks and resume normalcy. I certainly hope all are having a great holiday season and that 2011 will be better for all. The final award should be presented at the 2011 anniversary dinner in March. A new point system known as the "CNM Activity Award" was proposed to the Board. Points would be earned during each calendar year, with presentation of the award at the March Anniversary Dinner in the following year. The changes were presented to the Board and approved on 15 December 2010. As for the name of the new award, several suggestions were made and the Board decided to present the question to the membership at the January 5th meeting. John showed color photos of his Corvairs, one of which is a drag racer. Let's give a big New Mexico Welcome to Diane and John! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ RED RIVER REELING ROUND UP Brenda Stickler Well, folks, we have five months to get this Tri-State off the ground. Our two greatest needs are a Hospitality Room Hostess to contact our club in the Spring and suggest what goodies to bring and share during our hospitality time. Also, to wrap up leftovers for us to enjoy during the morning car show. We really thought it would be great to have a Tech Session this year at Tri-State. So, all of you who are mechanically inclined should consider being our Tech Session Leader. There is a very short term job that needs to be done for those who are in the UNM area during the week. We need to get the Tri-State logo to the All-Sports trophy shop in that area to get a bid on patches. It will be important to know what the minimum order is on these. We need to know their turn around time for production as well. The board always has to vote to purchase these patches to be put in the registration bags. The guest Hotel Lifts West has given us until March 30th to book our rooms for this event with discounts. Of the 30 rooms originally reserved there are now 20 rooms left. The car show that is being held our weekend there is growing, so the town will get booked up. Hotel phone number is 800-221-1859. To get the discounted rates you need to tell them you are part of the Corvairs of New Mexico Tri-State group for the weekend of June 3rd, 4th and 5th. Lifts West website is www.Liftswest.com. Their E-mail address is Liftswest@hotmail.com . So here is the Rugged Red-River Roster of leadership: Registration: Ollie Scheflow, Jim Pittman, Robert Gold; Registration Bags: Heula Pittman; Name Tags and Popcorn: Wendell Walker; Car Show: Art Gold, Pat Hall & Larry Yoffee; Banquet: Brenda Stickler; Door Prizes: Rita Gongora; Media Contact: Tarmo Sutt. Tech Session Open Please, make sure to support this wonderful group, because those of you who have not taken a chairperson post will be vital in getting us door prizes, items for the registration bags, baked goodies, working a shift at Registration and pitching in where needed at the Tri-State when you get there. We are looking forward to our fabulous Tri-State in Red River and hope you attend. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Birthdates: Javier Gold January 9 Carolyn Palmer January 10 Steve Gongora January 11 Gabriella Sanchez January 20 LeRoy Rogers January 20 Anniversaries: Nancy & Russ McDuffie January 16 Vickie & Pat Hall January 18 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The CNM Newsletter CD Project Jim Pittman Corvairs of New Mexico co-founder Mark Morgan, our first president, started a monthly newsletter with the January 1975 issue, mailed out in time for Christmas 1974. Except for a few missed months in the early days, we have kept the newsletter going ever since. I took over the editor's job in February 1978 and have not missed a month since. By now our club has produced 424 issues. They contain articles, stories, member profiles, reports on club events and Corvair technical tips. Each month we mail newsletters to all our members and to several other Corvair clubs and CORSA-related individuals across the country. Over the years our newsletter has remained true to the format Mark started in 1974: There's a cover illustration, a list of officers and contacts, a list of members whose dues are coming due, meeting minutes, a calendar of future events, reports on recent club activities, and occasional technical articles or tech tips. Every December we publish an index of the year's material and every January we publish a member list. From the start we always featured "artwork" in the newsletter, usually as line drawings, occasionally as halftone photos. In general the reproduction quality of drawings was good but the results with photos ranged from mediocre to poor. In late 1989 digital photos started to become available (thanks to Wendell for our first digital photography) and it became much easier to incorporate higher-quality illustrations in the newsletter. These photos are in color, even though the newsletter, up to the present issue, has always been printed in black-and-white. Ten years ago I set up an internet web page. It was primarily intended to hold material from our newsletters but it also included club news items. At first I only provided text versions of the newsletters starting with the earliest available, January 1998. I added an index to all the newsletters starting with January 1983. I thought if anyone found something of interest in the index, they could ask me for a photocopy of that issue. Bill Reider suggested that, when I finished my page layout of the newsletter, I could export it as a PDF and then e-mail the PDF to members who had e-mail access, thus saving on printing and postage costs. It turned out to be easy to edit the newsletter in full color, to make a PDF, and to put the PDF on my web page. I did not want to send large files by e-mail, but I could easily notify everyone by e-mail when the new issue was available on my web page. Then those who were interested could download it. We still mail the printed newsletter to those who prefer not to depend on downloading the PDF. In late 2006 I thought it would be good to have all our newsletters collected in one place in a computer-readable format. An obvious format was a CD, readable on any home computer. I started designing a CD to include both TEXT and PDF copies of as many newsletters as were available at the time. There was room left on the CD so I added some Corvair and Club-related photos. When the CD was presented to the club, several members bought copies, and then there was ... almost total silence. I expected to get some kind of feedback: complaints, kudos, suggestions for improvement. Nothing. It has taken four years for me to build up enthusiasm for another attempt at the Newsletter CD project. This second version has 200 issues in TEXT format and 133 issues in PDF format. In addition, there's an index covering January 1983 to December 2010, a few photos, and the 2010 newsletters from the Denver, Colorado Springs, Houston and Tucson clubs. This CD is offered to our members for $15 with all funds going to the club treasury. I intend to offer it to interested CORSA members for $20 including shipping and handling. (If production costs turn out to be too high the price may have to be increased.) I am hoping that some of our members will be pleased to have hundreds of issues of our award-winning newsletter conveniently available for viewing or printing from their home computer. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Years Ago -- Jim Pittman 7: JAN 2004 - VOL 30 Nr. 1 - # 340 On the cover, buffalo (bison) are seen near Taos Pueblo, August 1970. We had tech tips on cleaning windows and at the December meeting there were demos of different ways to cut sheet metal. Thanks, Geoff. VP Sally Johnson ran our December meeting featuring 19 members. Wendy reported $6035 in our accounts. A trip to Bosque del Apache was planned. Our Christmas party was called one of the best and CNM founder Mark Morgan was present. An article by your editor told why "Im Glad I've Got Positraction" when he made the 1970 trip to where the bison photo was made. An article reprinted from the DENVAIR NEWS told more than we ever thought there was to learn about railroad locomotive oil changes. Richard Finch donated a copy of his new book "How to Air Condition Any Corvair" for a raffle at our next meeting. Our annual member list showed 58 families not counting Joe Trujillo, our Galles Chevrolet sponsor. 14: JAN 1997 VOL 23 Nr. 1 - # 256 The cover had Corvair vans taking over the world in 1997. Sylvan Zuercher reported a new member, 1965 owner Raymond Burns of Taos, and we heard that Fred Edeskuty was planning to rejoin the club. President Mark Domzalski ran our meeting. Treasurer Will Davis reported $7,369,71 in our various bank accounts. We looked into putting part of our money into a mutual fund and the Board decided on $5000 to go into the Dow-5 starting in January. The final tally for the Michelle Goffe foundation contributions was $900. Thanks to Steve and Rita Gongora for hosting our "Ethnic" Pot-luck Dinner. Bob Beasley showed us the tie rod that fell off his Starfire - at 5 MPH in a parking lot, not at 65 MPH on the highway. After the meeting adjourned, Sylvan demonstrated the fine art of disassembling your carburetor. On Saturday we planned a session on putting it back together again. Mark Domzalski told how to get modern sound in your FC with a new AM/FM/CD unit and door-mounted speakers. Kent Wall told how to get better defroster heat by adding a baffle plate. Jim Pittman gave us a chronology of the precursors, the founding and the development of the club to date. Finally, our member list had 61 names. 21: JAN 1990 VOL 16 Nr. 1 - # 172 The cover said Corvairs were good for any time zone. Was a major race track to be built north of town? Jerry Goffe reported that the November Medal of Honor parade was most impressive. Brian Zolna announced he was leaving the Air Force and would go back to Pennsylvania, so we'd need a new treasurer. Val Vaughn's company was to take over our newsletter printing. New or recycled members this month included Chris Baca, Wayne Christgau, Dick Cochran, Bill Denison, Fred Edeskuty, Nicole James and Randy Knoblauch. Tom Martin's La Ventana column explored the life of Bill Reider from Chicago to Korea to Albuquerque. A member list was published and there were 57 names. Finally, a full page ad told us that Francis Boydston was getting out of the Corvair parts business and Mike and Brenda Stickler were taking it over. 28: JAN - 1983 VOL 9 Nr. 1 - # 088 The cover featured an early coupe zipping around an autocross course. We voted to continue to meet at Ed Black's instead of moving to a restaurant - the best vote the club ever made. George Morin gave a great talk on re-lining your brakes and Bill Reider evaluated an engine compartment lock. 35: JAN 1976 - VOL 2 Nr. 1 - # 012 The cover featured Mark Morgan's "What do you mean, not a REAL Monza" cartoon. We had new "Corvairs of New Mexico" front license plates. We had 42 members and Jim Pittman reported the results of our first Club questionnaire (14 people responded, claiming a total of 44 Corvairs) and provided an article on improving your shifting by installing a Clark's bushing kit. Finally, Anna Gould and Terry Gray told us about the 1960 Corvair being rated Car of the Year by Motor Trend, and the 1962-1964 Spyder being rated a Milestone Car by the Milestone Car Society. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ CNM MEMBER LIST AS OF DECEMBER 25, 2010 FIRST NAME LAST NAME E-MAIL ADDRESS CITY, STATE HOME PHONE WORK PHONE ============================ =============================== ============ ============ ============ Debra & Jon Anderson jbanderson65 @ hotmail.com Colorado Springs 719-572-6747 Melba J & Tommie J Anderson motormeter30 @ aol.com Rio Rancho 505-892-4055 Kathy & Larry Blair blairylar @ hotmail.com Albuquerque 505-821-1386 505-249-1035 Ruth Boydston sg730 @ comcast.net Albuquerque 505-821-1506 Linda & Dick Cochran @ Grants 505-287-8403 Darlene & William Darcy @ Belen 505-864-6423 Deborah & John Dinsdale john_dinsdale @ adp.com Aurora, CO = Elizabeth & Mark Domzalski edomzalski @ aol.com Arlington, VA 571-970-6327 Constance & Hubbard Elmore @ Albuquerque 505-898-8397 Gayle & Richard Finch finchbooks @ tularosa.net Tularosa 505-585-8035 Marilyn & Richard Foster @ White Rock 505-672-9404 Amy & David Franco guselvis @ msn.com Albuquerque 505-506-7029 Wibke Garrecht @ Albuquerque 505-255-2212 505-884-0133 Alan Gold alanmgold @ sbcglobal.net Albuquerque 505-268-6878 Anne Mae & Robert Gold beisbol30 @ msn.com Albuquerque 505-268-6878 505-830-7930 Kelly & Art Gold rollerart @ gmail.com Albuquerque 505-620-7434 Rita & Steve Gongora stevegongora @ houseofcovers.com Albuquerque 505-292-5570 505-256-0551 Vickie & Pat Hall patandvickiehall @ q.com Los Lunas 505-865-5574 505-620-5574 Susanne & Larry Hickerson hyosilver @ comcast.net Albuquerque 505-296-1636 505-228-5284 Cary A.
