First of all, for those of you who are fairly new to our great club and are saying to yourself, "Who the heck is this new president?" well, let me take this opportunity to quickly introduce myself. My name is Ray Trujillo and I've been a member of CNM since August of 2003 and served as president for two years: 11/2005-11/2007. I've been married to my lovely wife Sylvia for 32 wonderful years. Now if you ask Sylvia about the wonderful part, hopefully she won't say that it's been more like "full of wonder." Anyway, I'm truly the lucky one in our marriage and she definitely is my better half. We have two sons, Julian and Isaac, and both have been a pleasure to raise and we now enjoy them as young independent adults. As a family, we enjoy many different activities and we're proud to be a three Corvair household. Well, that's my quick introduction and undoubtedly we'll get to know each other better through our mutual Corvair hobby. Now for those of you who already know me, Good luck! As you may remember, my monthly articles are about upcoming and past Corvair club matters and occasionally I'll toss in something that may or may not have anything to do with Corvairs. This time around will probably be no different. So let me begin with CNM club matters first. Our annual Auction/potluck/bingo night is Saturday, November 8th starting at 5 PM at Steve and Rita Gongora's House of Covers. They are located at 115 Richmond NE. This is always a great time and if you haven't been to this event then you really owe it to yourself to attend. We have a lot of fun! We play several games of bingo with half the proceeds going to CNM and the other half going to the bingo winner. Also, we have items that members have donated to CNM for auction and those profits go directly to CNM as well. Last but not least, we get to enjoy each other's company as we also get to feast on the many great potluck dishes. This event is one of the few fund raisers we have during the year so bring your auction items, your favorite potluck dish, some cash and expect to have a really good time. You know, the first few years when I introduced the bingo part of the evening, I was in charge of calling out the numbers so I didn't get to play a bingo card. My wife and two sons played at least a dozen games apiece and didn't win a single time. At the end of the evening my family would tell me they were only one number away from yelling out bingo but I never ended up calling that final winning number. All I could say was "Be patient and eventually you will win." Somewhere along the third year John Wiker relieved me of my bingo calling duties and I was now able to play a bingo card. Well on my very first game of bingo I was a lucky winner. My family couldn't believe that I had won on my first try and said to me "What about, be patient and eventually you will win?" All I could say was that's still true for you guys but if you're blessed by the Corvair gods then to heck with the patient. Okay, on to our next topic. At the October 17th Board meeting we discussed if we should combine the annual Christmas party with the auction/potluck/bingo evening. This topic was brought up since our usual restaurant was no longer open and obviously not an option to host us for our Christmas party. Most of the Board felt that we should keep the Christmas party separate and on its own. As Christmas is just a few short months away we also felt it would be difficult to find another host restaurant, so I suggested that instead of trying to find another restaurant that we could possibly have our Christmas party at the Highland Senior Center and make it another potluck affair. Well, after talking to the Highland Senior Center, they were able to accommodate us on December 13th from 1:30 to 3:30 PM. In addition, we decided that CNM would purchase a couple of hams as the main dish and that the attending membership would then bring the side dishes to complete the holiday meal. Personally I'm glad we decided to keep the Christmas party separate because the auction slash potluck slash bingo evening surely can't endure another slash by adding Christmas to it also. Again, for those of you who are new to the club that last sentence is my warped sense of humor that sometimes just gets away from me. Okay, back to business, the Board also discussed which group we would donate to this Christmas. Originally we were going to work with the APS clothing bank but found that they give most of their donations directly to Goodwill for resale. CNM is looking to donate to a group that actually gives our items directly to their needy clients. So we'll continue looking and investigating other options. If you have any suggestions let the Board know fairly soon. On a sad note, CNM lost a long time member, Mike Stickler, on October 4, 2014. Mike was a great guy and had many friends in the club. Mike served as president from 11/2007-11/2008. Mike and his wife Brenda have been very active members over the years and Steve Gongora has written a tribute article on Mike for this month's newsletter. On another sad note, Bill and Lee Reider lost their son Steve on October 18, 2014. To the Sticklers and the Reiders, please know that our thoughts and prayers go out to you and your families. Speaking of families, CNM really is a family unto itself as many of us have become lifelong friends, sometimes more like brothers and sisters, relationships just like many of our own immediate and extended families. CNM is such an active club that I'll bet some months we might see each other more than our own brothers and sisters. Over the last few years I've not been as active in our club as I was during the first seven years and I've really missed it. Life had somehow found a way to disrupt me but I tried to stay as current as possible with our club news by reading our awesome monthly newsletters. Even though I was not present very often I never really felt too far away and I always felt that I could attend any club activity and still feel quite welcome at anytime. You see what I mean, just like family. Well I guess that's enough said for now and I'll close by saying that I'm honored and glad to serve as your president once again. See you at the next club meeting. -- Ray Trujillo ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ REGULAR MEETING MINUTES -- 10-01-2014 Anne Mae Gold Meeting: Called to order at 7:06 PM. Last month's minutes were approved and the treasury held $4,611.57. Membership: James Turner attended his first CNM meeting. He recently bought a 1965 Monza Spyder Corvair. Larry Yoffee brought up the question of ordering new club wear: T-shirts, CNM caps. We could order polos ($20-30) and caps ($15). By show of hands, there seems to be a good amount of interest. Steve Gongora and Larry Yoffee both participated in the invitation-only Concours du Soleil. There were 73 cars in the show. Larry has put pictures up on his website. Car Council: Robert did not attend this past month. There will be a meeting in November. The Swap Meet was a great success. Fred Riggs, a long-time member, was sighted at the Swap Meet. Editor: Newsletter deadline is Friday October 24. Per the latest CORSA Communique this year our newsletter did not win any awards, nor did our web site. Please check the Car Council website for upcoming car events in the city. We have had no news from Wendell's family as far as services are concerned. Merchandise: Vickie has sold a dash plaque. Vickie thanks Tarmo Sutt and Terry Price for bringing in some tools for the Sunshine Committee. Old Business: Corvairs of New Mexico at the State Fair Car Show just celebrated 19 years in its second go around. There was a good turnout, 11 cars. All types of Corvair were represented except two. Joining the All-Chevy Show was a Vintage Chevrolet group traveling along Old Route 66. New Business: Lube postponed the Old Route 66 cleanup because the membership is very busy this next weekend, not to mention the beginning of the Balloon Fiesta. It has been rescheduled for Saturday October 18th at 8:30 AM. The membership will be notified by email. The annual Auction/Bingo/Potluck will be held Saturday November 8 at House of Covers. Dave has made reservations at Sadie's on Fourth Street for when Mary Lou & Mark Martinek come to visit. It will be Thursday October 9 at 6:00pm. Dave has been contacted by a non-profit that has had a Corvair donated to them. They'd like to know more information about how to go about turning it into a profit for their organization. Tarmo has 5 tickets left to sell for the Palm Springs, California Fan Belt Toss. Heula named the APS Clothing Bank as the charity we will donate to at the Christmas Dinner. K-12 clothing (gently used), new underwear and socks, as well as jackets would be much appreciated. They will also take monetary contributions. Bring your donations to the dinner. Dave held our election. He is not running for reelection. Tarmo Sutt agreed to remain for another term as Vice President, Anne Mae Gold agreed to remain for another term as Secretary, Robert Gold agreed to to stay as Treasurer for one more year. There are some board positions that are not elected (Sunshine, Merchandise, Membership, Car Council). Robert Gold volunteered to be the Car Council representative. Heula nominated Ray Trujillo for President and he agreed. He was voted in unanimously. Jim talked about travelling around New Mexico with friends from Wisconsin and how the club should revisit some of the places the club has visited before. Tarmo talked about some of the driving and travel smartphone apps he discovered on a trip to and from California. The 50/50 was won by Robert Gold. It totaled $14. He donated his part to the club. We adjourned at 8:21 PM. A short meeting of the Sunshine Committee was held. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ BOARD MEETING MINUTES -- 10-15-2014 Heula & Jim Present: David Huntoon, Robert Gold, Tarmo Sutt, Lube Lubert, Ray Trujillo, Heula Pittman, Jim Pittman. Present also were three early Corvairs. David reported that when he went to register his "new" 1963 Monza convertible, the MVD demanded that it be weighed. None of us had heard of this requirement before. So far he has not found a place to weigh it. Robert reported that Anne Mae had to see a chiropractor for back pain. Vickie was with Pat at the Hall Ranch or maybe Rancho del Sur. Tarmo reported a more hectic than usual motorcycle ride down from Santa Fe, surrounded by speeding cars and trucks. His Honda Goldwing sure looked spiffy in the parking lot, though. Robert reported $4,491.61 in the treasury. Jim reported the newsletter deadline was Friday October 24th. Lube said we needed to cancel or at least postpone the October 18th Old Route 66 cleanup because of construction along our mile of NM 333. Jim said he would coordinate with our Department of Transportation contact. We discussed the idea of combining the Christmas party with the November House of Covers potluck/auction/bingo party. An advantage might be to avoid a gathering during the busy month of December. So far a venue has not been found for a Christmas party and it's getting late in the year to find one. Ray suggested we could have an afternoon potluck party at the Highland Center on a Saturday in December. The club could purchase a ham or turkey and people could bring potluck side dishes, thus avoiding the high price of a restaurant meal. Ray said he'd check on the availability of a room at Highland Senior Center. We will have time to discuss and plan the event at the November meeting and get the word to all members. We decided to aim for an afternoon party. Thursday morning: Ray reported that he has reserved the large room at Highland Senior Center, address 131 Monroe NE for Saturday December 13th from 1:30 to 3:30 PM. Since they close at 4:00 PM that will give us 30 minutes to clean up after our party. We'll discuss this more in November and December. The House of Covers potluck/auction/bingo party already scheduled for 5:00 PM, Saturday November 8th will proceed as it has in previous years. This has always been enjoyable and well-attended. There was much discussion of our planned Christmas donation to a charity. Lee Reider and Emma Rogers learned that the APS clothing bank has been changed since last year. They accept donations of NEW boys and girls underwear and socks, but all donations of clothing, toys, school supplies and so forth will go to the APS partnership with Goodwill. School officials determine which children are needy and issue certificates to those children so they can go to Goodwill and obtain items. Several of our members objected to donating items that would go into the general stores of Goodwill and be available for the general population to buy. We prefer our donation go directly to needy children. An effort will be made by volunteer members to find an organization to which we can donate clothing, supplies and toys directly. The Sunshine Committee will be in charge of activities at the Christmas Party and plans are in progress. The board approved a drawing for TWO one-year memberships this year. These will be offered in memory of our three members who passed away during 2014. David asked if a biography or obituary for Mike Stickler will be included in the newsletter. Jim said that he did have such an article. There was no report on membership, merchandise or the Car Council. There will be a Car Council meeting on Wednesday October 22nd. The name of the club activity award has been changed back to the IKE MEISSNER AWARD and it will be presented at our March Anniversary party. After the meeting David turned over the "symbols of office" to new president Ray Trujillo. They comprise the club briefcase and its contents. In the parking lot we all admired David's "new" 1963 Monza convertible. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ REMEMBERING MIKE STICKLER Steve Gongora Mike Stickler, a longtime member of Corvairs of New Mexico, passed away on October 4, 2014. My initial contact with CNM had an interesting connection with Mike. It was Mike's roommate, Bill Seno, who got me to my first meeting of the club back in 1974. Bill took me to the meeting which was held in the garage of an old time racer at Isleta Blvd and Bridge. The racer's name was Duncan Puett. I did not learn of Bill's connection with Mike until much later. Bill and Mike had many things in common. They met at TV-I and had roll call every morning. Seno and Stickler were back-to-back on the roll call. Mike was born on April 2, 1947 and Bill was born two days earlier. They both served their country in the form of military service, with Mike serving in the Navy and Bill in the Army. They celebrated their birthdays every year. Their daughters were born a few weeks from each other. They both had Corvairs and Triumphs. Mike owned a Triumph Spitfire and Bill owned a Triumph Bonneville motorcycle. As far as I know, all these things were pure coincidences. After attending the October 10th memorial celebration of life for Mike, I thought of the things shared in the service that resonated Mike's being. He was a pillar of strength for his family, his church, and his community. He always had a quiet smile, and never had anything to say about someone unless it was good. He will always be remembered for his kindness and his genuine concern for others. And of course he was a great Corvair mechanic and for years had as his daily driver a brown-tan Greenbrier. His contributions to the club go well beyond words. He was an early member, joining the club in July 1976. When Francis Boydston retired from the parts business, Mike and Brenda took over his inventory of Corvair parts. By continuing this business Mike helped our club members by providing local availability of many hard-to-find Corvair parts. He had an interest in other moving transports, namely locomotives and trains, and even went back east to trailer back to Albuquerque a special purchase in the form or a collectible 1940's station wagon. I don't know if he knew that the Greenbrier he bought from Jerry Goffe once transported the famous Mary Travers of the vocal group Peter, Paul and Mary on an occasion when Mary was to be picked up at the airport. She was used to being picked up in fancier cars! You can't beat the uniqueness and utility of the Corvair Greenbrier. As far back as 1988 Mike was writing technical articles and reports on club activities for the newsletter. He received the club's Ike Meissner award in 1994. He served as President for two terms in 2007 and 2008. He joined the Tri-State's informal but famous "Tijuana Club" in Taos in 2009. Mike and Brenda were enthusiastic workers at the club project of cleaning trash on our mile of Old Route 66. Mike worked tirelessly on weekends to provide a comfortable retirement for Brenda and himself. It is hard to imagine someone who could give so much and still have time to pursue club activities. He is an inspiration to us all and we will keep his memory alive. Steve Gongora MIKE STICKLER 1947-2014 Michael A. Stickler passed away 10/4/2014. He was born in Albuquerque in 1947, one of seven children. He is survived by his mother Marilyn; his wife Brenda; their sons Kyle and Andrew; daughter Suzanne; and grandchildren Tristan and Maddie. Mike was preceded in death by his father Paul. Mike worked at ATL and recently retired as an inspector for the City of Albuquerque. He served honorably in the US Navy. Mike loved restoring classic cars and was an active member of Corvairs of NM for 30 years. His friends and family will remember his infectious humor, love of nature and his strong faith in God. Albuquerque Journal: Published Thursday October 09, 2014 A message from Brenda: We celebrated Mike's life, Friday, October 10th, at St Andrew's Presbyterian Church at 6:30 PM. Mike went peacefully and is finally cancer free. Several members parked their Corvairs prominently at the front door of the church for this celebration. St Andrew's Presbyterian Church is just South and East of San Mateo and Montgomery. The address is 5301 Ponderosa Ave NE, Albuquerque, New Mexico 87110, telephone 881-9626. Our family greatly appreciates the help we have received from club members, especially the food. Love to each of you. -- Brenda Mike joined CNM in July 1976. He quickly became an active member of CNM, serving two terms as president. He served as New Mexico Car Council representative for our club. Mike and Brenda often provided transportation for other members to meeting and to club events. Mike and Brenda took over the Corvair parts business when Francis Boydston retired from that role in the club. Mike was the author of many newsletter articles over the years and restored and drove several Corvairs. Mike fought cancer for nearly ten years. He went into the hospital for pain management on September 22nd, contracted pneumonia and was in ICU from September 25th until October 3rd. Mike Stickler was a key member of CNM. He greatly enriched our club and his many friends will miss him. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ CONCOURS DU SOLEIL 2014 Steve Gongora Expecting rain, I accepted that my Rampside would be among many cars in a downpour. The rain never came and I was privileged to be part of an event that raised over $200,000 over the weekend for the Albuquerque Community Foundation. My involvement with the Concours du Soleil started with a man that came to my shop and looked at the banner on the wall of my truck and said we need your truck for this year's event. He said it was a Toast to the Coast and my Rampside would be the perfect addition to the category, California Dreamin'. He was placing a surfboard in his Range Rover. I called the man in charge and I was in the show. There were over 73 cars for the event with precise orchestration of display for the cars. I received emails of the coming event and exact times to show up to minimize any traffic jams. Here was my email instructions for California Dreamin' : 9:00am Stan & Michelle Franowski Tom Black Richard Steichen Adam Harrington Ken Harrington 9:15am Darin Davis Don Holly Trae Wood Jimmy Martinez Don Watenpaugh 9:30am Steve Gongora Alberto Estrada Tim McGrath Benny Martinez Stacey Scherer & Geary Pyles Irwin Harms - Tesla It took a lot of planning to pull it off. The cars were immaculate and inspiring. I discovered from the last Corvair meeting that Larry Yoffee was showing his 65 Corsa Turbo. His car was in the 50's - 60's Originals. All the cars deserved an award. Jerry Roehl hosted the Concours du Soleil at his estate. The vehicles were placed from the front of the property the end and every place in between including cars surrounding the pool. You can experience some of the excitement through these websites: http://www.seehotcars.com/Default.aspx and the facebook page with this year's additions: https://www.facebook.com/SeeHotCars My 1962 Rampside came in 3rd place in my field of 16 cars. 1st place went to a 1947 Buick Roadmaster Estate Wagon (a genuine Woody), and 2nd place to a 1960 Corvette belonging to Tom Black. His Corvette had the similar Red with White Insert paint as my truck. I was honored for my award. This kind of event brings cars out of the woodwork. I have not heard of a Fiskar Karma (made in Finland) until one parked in front of my truck. The sponsors brought in a McLaren 650S twin-turbo powered race car and a 1955 Ferrari 500 Mondial Series II race car that was shown only on the Sunday Public Show. It was mentioned by the host that this was the best collection of cars to date. -- Steve Gongora ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ THE CONCOURS DU SOLEIL 2014 -- LOS RANCHOS DE ALBUQUERQUE September 21, 2014 Larry Yoffee We were pleased to be selected to participate in the 2014 Concours du Soleil held on a private estate in Los Ranchos de Albuquerque this September 21st. Both Steve Gongora and I showed in the 50's-60's class and California Dreamin' respectively. And congratulations to Steve for taking a third place in his class. Way to go Steve. This was certainly a first for me and it was a great opportunity to see important cars that I normally don't get to see. I did get a lot of interest and praise for my Corsa and answered a lot of questions. It sort of felt like a mini-Pebble Beach Concours de Elegance (without the beach) or at least what I would imagine that to be. It was great that they selected two Corvairs to participate. Steve got a great spot. Not too sure about the way they staged my car but I was so pleased to be there, it really didn't matter. The following is a little about the event itself. The pictures speak for themselves as to the quality of the collection shown this day. For a more complete presentation of the event please go to : www.corsaturbo180usa.com and click on: Concours du Soleil -- Larry ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ SINGING THE PRAISES OF ROUTE 66 -- OCTOBER CAR COUNCIL REPORT Robert Gold I was hoping that the last Car Council meeting of the year would be short and sweet. As I drove up quickly in my old Corvair 500 I realized there would be a bit of delay. No lights were on in the building. The key to the room finally arrived and the meeting began 15 minutes late. Luckily, everything flowed rather quickly after that. Our treasurer began by noting that we had north of $20,000 in the bank. There were only a few outstanding bills to pay. Then began the real highlight of the evening. Against the the opinion of Las Vegas oddsmakers, J.D. and his gang had achieved the impossible. Zia Pueblo had agreed to our use of their symbol on our logo. We now only have to wait for the official document from the State to let us have the logo free and clear. Good job J.D.! There is a chance that the State could disappoint us, but ole J.D. won't be denied. Yours truly was then asked to describe the website. All I had to say was that there wasn't much to say. The member list had been refined and the events page had been updated using Joyce Clement's list. I guess no news is good news with the site. One suggestion was made to contact Paul Krause, the brains behind the site, and offer him a part of our bank balance for his efforts. I'll see if he wants to be paid or will settle for a donation to his favorite cause. Hopefully it won't be Public Citizen if you know what I mean. Jamie reported on the Facebook page. I'll tell you I believe everything she said since I don't have any idea about Facebook. She said there are some cool links to other cool Facebook sites. Good Going Jamie... Joyce Clements then took center stage and reported on the most successful swap meet of all time. One vendor declared that this site was one of the biggest around, even challenging Pamona for the variety of parts available. That's PAMONA the dream location of the song Little Cobra. Totally tubuler man! She went on to tell us that we cleared in the four to five thousand dollar range from the event. As Joyce observed, this event finances all the activities of the Council for the year. You ever wonder why we don't pay any dues to the Car Council? -- now you know. So what's the deal with that Singing the Praises thing about Route 66? Well, I didn't know about it either. Seems there was quite an event near our cleanup site a while back. The folks from National Geographic installed a bit of road that, and this is the truth -- sings to you as you cruise at a poky 45 mph. Your tires cause the production of a patriotic song of some sort. Several Council folks were there and said it was quite a cool thing. The show that was made from this event is to be shown sometime in early November. Check it out, it should be fun. I think I may drop by this area soon... With that, things wrapped up quickly and we were on our way. As I mentioned in the beginning, we won't be meeting again this year. I'll report to you again in late January. On a sad note I want to recognize Mike Stickler, our long time Council rep, who passed away recently. He'll be sorely missed. -- Robert Gold ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ THANKS TO LEE AND EMMA I'm not sure when we decided to make donations to worthy causes a part of our Christmas party. In 2004 Emma Rogers asked us to collect toys for a charity group. Every year after that she and Lee Reider have selected a worthy charity, organized our donations and delivered them. Over the years we have donated toys, toiletries, clothing and other items, including the occasional cash donation. This year the board, five of us teachers, focused on collecting good used or new clothing for school children. Lee and Emma researched the Albuquerque Public School system's clothing distribution program for us. They learned that the Parent-Teacher Association is no longer doing clothing distribution, and that APS now turns over donated clothing, except NEW underwear and socks, to Goodwill. Then, school officials determine needy children and give them gift cards to redeem at Goodwill or at Payless Shoes. Several of our members objected. We prefer to donate clothing directly to needy children rather than have our items go into the Goodwill public store where anyone can buy. Board members are researching suitable charities and we will learn more at upcoming meetings. We should thank Lee Reider and Emma Rogers for taking on this task for at least ten years and distributing donated items to several organizations. We should not expect Lee and Emma to continue doing this chore. If we are to continue making donations at Christmas, or at other times of the year, we need new volunteers to step up to take over the task. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ THE $30,000 ADJUSTABLE WRENCH -- 2014 CAR COUNCIL SWAP MEET Robert Gold CNM'ers -- if you had planned to attend the 2014 version of the Car Council Swap Meet, I'm sorry to tell you that you missed it. However, I know for sure a few of you made this meet, which has grown to be one of the premier events in this part of the country. I'm not exaggerating when I say that on Saturday morning, when John Wiker, Alan Gold, Art Gold and I showed up for our morning duties, exhibitors were almost knocking down the gates to get in. The result was the sale of all of the hundreds of spaces available. We've reached critical mass with this event. That's a pretty good analogy for us New Mexico residents. Before I go on I want to recognize all the Club members who made it to this event. In addition to our Saturday morning crew, there were Lube and Pat Hall who helped lay out the field on Thursday and Fred Riggs and Bill Darcy who toured the sea of vendors on Saturday. It was good to see you all. I don't know if you approach a car swap meet the same way I do, but I usually have some idea of what I want to find at the event. I'm sorry to say that my first choice, a barn-find, fully complete, 1950s Ferrari was not to be found. With a heavy heart I fell back to the next thing on my list, a small "channel lock" pliers. I found one for just $2.00 -- exactly what I wanted. It was then I made the mistake of visiting Pat Hall's space. I mean mistake in a good way. Sorta like the boy who told his parents the dog followed him home and could he keep it? Well you can't hang out with Pat without a dog lurking in the background. Art and I sat down and before we knew it that cute dog turned out to be a 1966 RED high performance Vair hardtop. In just a few moments a trade was negotiated involving a 1961 Rampside and a 1964 convertible. I later went on the Haggerty site and calculated, based on book value, that we exchanged vehicles with a total value of a staggering $30,700. That got me thinking about how our cars have become so valuable. Here's my theory about that. I think we're the beneficiaries of three separate occurrences that have come together. The first is that Jay Leno has discovered the Corvair. In response to that he bought several different models of our car and then he produced some excellent videos that tout their charms. The second is that our cars have transitioned from just being old to being old AND cool. No doubt you've driven down the street in your daily driver to a sea of "thumbs up" from the public. I even had a rather cute girl in a drive-thru who told me how cool I was to have such a car. I know for sure she had no idea what kind of car it was. Eat you heart out Corvette owners -- we don't need to spend the big bucks to be admired. Lastly, Corvairs being sold at auction on TV are being sold at upwards of $20,000. Since Novas, Chevelles and Camaros are going for $30K or more, where is a person to go for a classic 60s Chevy at a reasonable price -- a Corvair for sure! Not bad hugh? To sum things up... I went to a swap meet simply to get a $2.00 wrench and wound up making a five figure car swap. This is all thanks to Pat Hall. Maybe next year you could do the same. -- Robert Gold ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ THERE ARE ONLY 5 PEOPLE LIVING IN ALBUQUERQUE Robert Gold I recently passed the 30 year mark in Albuquerque. Though this doesn't make me a "native", I've lived here long enough to realize a unique feature of the city we love... this is a big, small town. By that I mean even though this town is approaching 600,000 it really operates like a small town. I'm sure many of you have stories that prove my point. I think you may find this Corvair-related story to be amusing. Some time ago our club received a notice that our long-time absentee member Mary Lou Martinek was selling her beloved 1963 Monza convertible. This notice was similar to ones that the club receives from time-to-time. Since I'm up to my ears in cars I didn't even consider buying it. To "switch gears" I want to also mention that I have gotten to the point where I drive my 1964 500 tudor most of the time. So I was tooling down Menaul feeling special in my classic car, when what should I see (not a sleigh with reindeer!) but a shiny turquoise-blue Corvair convertible coming towards me! I know you think you know how this is going to turn out, but stay with me here... I started waving frantically at the car to get the driver's attention to confirm I was also a member of the Corvair fraternity. The question in my mind was, Who was driving that convertible? In a flash I saw that it was David Huntoon. He waved, but in sort of a self-conscious manner. I immediately thought two things, 1. I didn't know Dave had an early Corvair convertible, and 2. Why was he acting that way? I would soon find out the answers. It turned out that we were having the monthly board meeting that night. I couldn't wait to ask Dave about the car. I went to the meeting and there were Dave and the other board members. I immediately mentioned our chance encounter and asked about the car. Here is the punchline. Dave had bought Mary Lou Martinek's car. His intention was to make the big reveal at the meeting, and I stole his thunder! This was a result of my simply happening upon him in his new car earlier in the day. What are the odds this would happen, especially in a city the size of Albuquerque? I have the answer -- the odds are really good because we act like a small town. Whenever stuff like this happens I always say it is because there are really only 5 people living in Albuquerque and that's why we always know what's going on. I want to congratulate Dave on his acquisition and I'm sorry for throwing water on his announcement. -- Robert Gold ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ CAR SHOW AT HOME DEPOT IN LOS LUNAS Vickie Hall What a turn-out! Approximately forty really good looking cars, trucks and even a youngster's race car with slicks on the rear and a parachute to boot. The kids were wearing their red hats given to them by the fire department. Booths were set up from various places of business. The one Pat found interesting was ECO-Blasted, a company that uses ultra-high pressure water jetting and a standard dry blasting system. Home Depot sponsored the event and gave out free raffle tickets for a drawing to win a $300.00 gift certificate and Free Food. Four hours of good weather and lots of friendly people. A very enjoyable day even though we forgot to bring our chairs. Thanks for listening. Pat & Vickie Hall ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ DURANGO TRI-STATE -- MAY 29-30-31 2015 Hello, a short note to keep everyone informed on the 2015 Tri-State. We thought we had a deal at the Hampton Inn but the final deal was just too expensive at $125/night. So we scrambled and found the Super-8 Durango Motel. The Super-8 is a medium priced/medium rated motel with good reviews. They agreed to a price $95 per night for a single queen room and $99 for a double queen room. Corvair folks should call with a code word of "Rocky Mountain Corsa." This is $15 off their regular price at that time of year. The number to call is 970-259-0590. Robert provided a glowing account of the day! All members and their due dates were listed. Ray Trujillo was in Hawaii so John Wiker ran our meeting. David's father Walter Huntoon visited. Wendell said we had $2,932.67 in the bank. Our Christmas charity was Barrett House. Brenda Stickler and Sylvia Trujillo worked on a 2008 calendar project. The election gave us Mike Stickler, Pat Hall, Wendell Walker and Chuck Vertrees. Eleven Corvairs were in the State Fair car show. Mike Stickler told us he had been working on Corvairs since he was a teen-ager and Francis Boydston introduced him to CNM in 1976. Oliver Scheflow reported on completing our eleventh year of Old Route 66 cleanups. Your editor ranted about the idiocy politicians showed by mandating that ethanol be added to gasoline. Still going on today, at who knows what environmental and financial costs to us all. Do you know the old joke about, How do you tell if a politician is lying? 2000 Vol 26 Nr 11 #302 On the cover, Mark Domzalski was at the State Fair Car Show with his excellent Rampside. The editor asked everyone to go out and vote. Choices were Dubya, Big Al and Ralph. Did any CORSA member vote for Ralph? At our October meeting we had guests Jim & Marlene Craig from Joshua Tree, California, driving an Ultra Van. Treasurer Wendell said we had $5,746 in the bank. Our Galles sponsor asked us to all leave at the same time to help out the security crew. Mark was going to Flagstaff to check on how our club would be able to help with the 2002 CORSA convention. Robert said we had twelve Corvairs at the State Fair and everyone had a great time. Brenda reported that the CNM Ladies met at the Stickler cabin in the Jemez. The next meeting would be at the Pleaus' unless they sold their house first -- they were getting ready to move to Colorado. We needed someone to take over CNM's web page. All officers were elected to another term. President Wilvert thanked everyone for the vote of confidence, thanked Ollie and the rest of the Old Route 66 cleanup crew, thanked Tarmo & Kay for organizing the Frostbite Tour to the Jemez, and thanked whoever would maintain the web site. Technical: an article by Bill Hubbell listed large and small differences between "early-earlies" and "late-earlies" which he compiled by comparing his 1961 and 1964 Monza sedans. A tech tip by Rusty Rose told us how to absolutely seal a back window -- from the context, it must have been addressed to owners of early models, not late models. Richard Finch told us about de-burring and lubricating spark plugs before installing them in aircraft engines. Diane Galli addressed vapor lock problems solved by a return gas line. Corey Homer told us who actually manufactures Craftsman tools. Joel Rushworth told us to replace your battered late convertible seat bottom with one from a 1989 Chevy Cavalier. Kenneth Schifftner relayed interesting details about the NTIS test of the early Corvair in which it proved to be just as safe as its contemporaries. Finally, Mark Martinek told us that the reason the country was running out of oil and nobody noticed was simple: most of the oil was in Oklahoma and Texas but all the dipsticks were in Washington. Oh for the days when we could joke about politics. 1993 Vol 19 Nr 11 #218 On the cover, a 1961 station wagon. President Del ran our meeting. Treasurer Will reported $1285 in the bank. Our State Fair report said there were seventeen Corvairs in a very nice show. Dennis planned an article for the Communique to get more national attention for CNM as we plan for the 1996 convention. Francis said the CNM constitution called for the treasurer to be bonded; this had never been done. We voted for the board to look into this. Election night! President, secretary and treasurer agreed to run for re-election; Dennis agreed to run for vice president. We sold twelve copies of Bill's Care & Feeding booklet to Lon Wall's Corvair Underground. Larry said he was getting a valve train geometry kit to determine optimum pushrod lengths. Kay Sutt FAXed her report on the trip to Embudo: a good Aspencade despite the dreary weather. Quiz: Why was Otto Mechanic's uncle known as the "Wicked Winch of the West" and why wasn't the 1916 Gillette one sharp car? 1986 Vol 12 Nr 11 #134 On the cover, a Mark Morgan fantasy race-prepared Corvair. We had $853 in the bank. LeRoy reported progress on the Library Van project. New officers were Clayborne Souza, Tarmo Sutt, LeRoy Rogers, Chuck Vertrees. LeRoy provided a summary of expenses and income for 1985. Our next meeting was to be in Santa Fe. We planned an Aspencade to Bandelier National Monument. Bill Reider told us how to winterize our cars. Technical: what is in those heavy black cylinders in the trunk and engine compartment of late convertibles? Why is it a bad idea to remove them? We learned about electromagnetic effects of CB radios, neon signs, radar and cosmic rays on electronic ignition, fuel injection and anti-lock brake systems. According to Ride Pool, depreciation is the biggest expense in owning a car. Their 1984 data was based on buying a new car. If you go out and buy a Corvair today, will it depreciate? 1979 Vol 5 Nr 11 # 50 On the cover, a Corvair crossword puzzle. We needed to get our dues up-to-date, achieve 100% CORSA membership and construct stanchions for future shows. The board voted to reimburse the editor $15 for copying, photography and printing. New officers were Norm Brand, Bill Reider, Francis Boydston, Sylvan Zuercher. We had a report on the Aspencade to Valle Grande and an article on an "articulated" experimental ATV with Corvair drive train. Tech tips included a comparison of bolting vs welding to fix loose, rattling flywheels and how to fix rear cooling door hinge pins. ========================================================================= Enchanted Corvairs Newsletter is published monthly by Corvairs of New Mexico, chartered Chapter #871 of CORSA, the Corvair Society of America.
