As of 25-SEP-2015 we have 46 active family memberships. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ MECHANICALLY UN-INCLINED Ray Trujillo Hello everyone! Alright, the fall season is now officially here and CNM has a few activities and events for you to add to your schedule. At our next monthly membership meeting we will hold our annual election of officers. As of right now, John Wiker has accepted his nomination to run for President and Lube Lubert has accepted his nomination to run for Vice-President. Robert Gold has volunteered to remain as Treasurer and Anne Mae Gold has volunteered to remain as Secretary. If you would still like to nominate someone for an officer position there's still time but please clear it with that person before submitting their name to the board. Please remember, even if you have not held a officer position in our club before there's always a first time for everything and it's basically spending a few hours a month of your time to keep our great club going. If you don't run for an officer position please help CNM by volunteering whenever the need presents itself. Let's try not to have the same individuals year after year doing the same chores. If you want our club to continue, please help by volunteering your time with activities and events. Speaking of volunteering, our scheduled Saturday October the 8th CNM cleanup has been rescheduled for Saturday October 22nd and this will be our club's final Old Route 66 cleanup for 2016. At our last cleanup we only had a few members show up so if you can, please come at 9:00 AM and meet at the triangle at I-40/NM333. Your help is greatly appreciated and we're usually done in about an hour. Okay, let's continue with more upcoming activities. On Saturday October 15th CNM will have lunch at the Ribs Hickory Pit BBQ restaurant located at 12220 State Highway 14 N in Cedar Crest. If you'd like to go please sign up at the next membership meeting. This should be a nice fall drive in the east mountain area and hopefully the leaves will still be turning those magnificent colors. If not, I'm sure the BBQ will be good. On the very next day Sunday October 16th, The Corrales Harvest Festival has once again invited CNM and it would be really nice if we could get at least six of us out there to display and promote our awesome Corvairs. We'll meet at 8:15 AM and if you'd like to participate, the Festival has moved us to the much more visible soccer field right in the middle of town where all the hayrides go by. This is a great family fun event and this is another great opportunity to enjoy the great fall weather in the beautiful Village of Corrales. Some of the offerings the festival has to offer are arts and crafts, local baked goods, locally grown produce, of course lots of great food, hayrides to take you from one end of town to the other and also live music at a stage in the shaded park. Hopefully you can make it to one or both of these awesome fall events. I know I'll try to be at both events and I look forward to seeing many of you there. Moving on to Saturday November 5th. CNM will once again have its annual Bingo/Potluck/Auction evening. This evening is one of our main fund raising activities so please come and support our club. It will begin at 5:00 PM and is hosted by Steve and Rita Gongora at their House of Covers business located at 115 Richmond NE. First of all, we'll play four or five games of Bingo with each card costing $2 each, the winner of each game will win half of the amount collected and CNM will keep the other half for its bank account. Please bring a potluck dish to share and enjoy with all the other potluck items that are brought by your fellow members. Also, if you have any items that you'd like to donate to the club for the silent auction then by all means please bring those items as well. This is always a fun evening and CNM benefits from the bingo and silent auction proceeds. Now let's review last month's activities. CNM had fourteen Corvairs at the State Fair Car show and we all had a good time visiting each other and enjoying what the Fair had to offer. Congratulations to Larry Blair for being awarded the "Best of Show" blue ribbon by the State Fair Commissioner for his 1964 Spyder Convertible. For more information on this show please read Robert Gold's more in-depth article. Also a big thank you to Anne Mae Gold for bringing the wonderful breakfast fixings for all to enjoy. It made a nice morning into a great morning. The other activity in September is the NMCCC Swap Meet and at the time of this writing the event has not yet taken place, so look for information regarding the meet in next month's newsletter. Well I guess that's enough said for now, so I hope to see you at the next club meeting and it has been an honor serving as your club president. -- Ray ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ September Meeting Minutes - 2016.09.07 Attendance: Ray Trujillo, John Wiker, Robert Gold, Vickie Hall, Larry Yoffee, Lube Lubert, the Ghost of Christmas Past, Jim Pittman, Hurley Wilvert, Pat Hall, Victor Sanchez, Bill Reider. Call to Order: 7:04 PM. Approval: Minutes approved. President: We received from Rocky Mountain CORSA the Francis Boydston Award plaque, with the name of the 2016 winner Ed Halpin engraved thereon, and Ray will retain it to take to the 2017 Tri-State. This plaque traditionally stayed at Ruth Boydston's house and we need to decide who will keep it. The club received a card from the Scheflow family thanking us for attending Ollie's service. Vice President: The move from Taylor Ranch to Edgewood is not working out as envisioned! It is much more work than anticipated! This weekend John & Ray plan to represent the club at the Tennis Club's 50th anniversary sock-hop. John will be working the balloon fiesta parking from zero dark thirty to 9:00 AM. If you want to drive your classic car on the balloon field, the day is Sunday October 2nd and the time is EARLY. Secretary: Anne Mae was at Sandia High School's open house, so Jim took notes. Treasurer: We have $4,643.64 in the bank. Editor: The deadline for the October newsletter is Friday September 23rd at 9:00 PM. Jim commented on the world we now live in where apparently if you are not active on Facebook and Twitter you are a troglodyte [look it up] living in an alternate and possibly inferior universe. Tri-State: Terry Price being absent, Larry discussed pre-registration. He does not want to do it, but (1) the folks running the banquet will want to know how to plan for banquet meals and (2) it appears we will have lots of people NOT in one of the three primary Tri-State CORSA chapters who will want to go to Taos 2017 and how do we get the word out to them? Larry discussed T-shirts, posters and a logo for the Tri-State and thinks all is in satisfactory progress. If you want to design a logo, please do. Larry said his web page will become the official page for Taos Tri-State information, registering and ordering. Car Council: Robert repeated the accolades about this year's picnic about which nothing but praise has been heard, except, due to larger-than-expected attendance, food ran short. President of the Car Council Jamie Saavedra was not exactly thrilled when Robert told her there were more Corvairs than GTOs this year. Merchandise: Vickie laid out our colorful collection of patches and memorabilia but reported she has sold nothing recently. She said, if there should be any sales, she'd like to keep the money for projects the "sunshine committee" is working on. Membership: Larry said he knew of no new members but said someone called him to ask about Chevys at car shows and seemed interested in our Corvair club. On asking about dues and hearing Larry's "only $70 per year" he expostulated, "What is this, a scam?!?" and hung up the phone. Pat Hall said he was working on the engine for a person from Santa Fe who expressed an interest in joining the club, but he did not show up at tonight's meeting. Miscellaneous Topics: * The 50/50 was won by Pat Hall who donated the entire $13 to the "sunshine committee." * Pat Hall remarked that tonight we had the lowest attendance in the eleven years he has been a member. He asked if we needed more Tunas or tech talks to attract people to attend. Victor commented that for some, meetings are just too far away for them to attend. Should we consider another meeting place? Some said, "Please, no." * Jim thanked Ray for his talk at Ollie's service and remarked that over the years he had never seen Ollie drive a Corvair or even talk about Corvair parts or restoration or maintenance. John remarked that at club events Ollie never talked about himself and we learned about his career as an engineer, including designing the lunar lander's shock absorbers, only when we attended the memorial service. He was a private person. * Lube received via UPS a package containing a repaired early Corvair axle -- to replace the one he donated to the hard-luck-award person at the Montrose Tri-State event. * Application forms were made available for the Great Western Fan Belt Toss & Swap Meet in Palm Springs, California, October 26-28. Adjournment: 8:15 PM. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ September Board Meeting Minutes - 2016.09.21 Anne Mae Gold Call to order: 5:01 PM President: After the next meeting Ray will call Ribs with a head count. At the end of last meeting we got the meeting request form for 2017 from Domingo Baca Multigenerational Center. We can use either the community room or classroom 4. Miscellaneous Topics: The Old Route 66 cleanup has been rescheduled for Oct. 22 at 9:00 AM, if the weather is nice. Where shall we have the Christmas dinner? Pot luck at Highland Senior Center? Quarters? Some other venue? Tarmo Sutt plans to enter his 1966 Corvair turbo convertible in the Santa Fe Concorso, 24 September. They will be driving to Galesteo, then to Cerrillos for lunch, then driving back into Santa Fe for the concourse. This would be a great opportunity for people to see some beautiful million-dollar cars! Please see the website for more information. Adjourned: 5:40 PM ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ BANG FOR YOUR BUCK October 22, Old Route 66 Cleanup Robert Gold It's a closely held secret that the last Route 66 cleanup of the season is just too easy. By that I mean, by the time we end our yearly efforts, there's not much trash out there. As you guessed, all the "heavy lifting" has been done earlier in the season by a dedicated of CNM'ers who have never numbered more than six on any cleanup morning. So here is your chance to support a wonderful tradition by our club and to do that without breaking a sweat! Join us on Saturday, October 8 at 8:30. You know you'll feel great about what you accomplish. Do it also to show support for Lube, the cleanup organizer! -- Robert Gold ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Commissioner for Disease Prevention (and his reward)! The State Fair Car Show Robert Gold It is now obvious to me that our fellow CNM member, Larry Blair, has enlisted in the war against the Zika virus. What? You might as well know why I know that. Well, after an absence of several years, Larry arrived at the Fair in his 1964 Spyder Turbo Vert. Also, arriving with the car was a thick plume of white smoke trailing behind his ride. And I mean THICK! Larry explained the smoke by observing that the car sat for some years and probably the seals associated with his turbo had gone bad. However, I know the real truth, Larry has actually signed up in the war against Zika. He was spraying to kill those nasty mosquitoes! Larry, thank you for keeping us healthy... cough, cough. This year 14 cars were entered in our State Fair Car Show. When we set up on Heritage Ave, the line of Corvairs seemed to go on forever. We had a nice mixture of models and years for the public to see. Here they are: 1. Robert Gold .................. 1962 Loadside 2. Anne Mae Gold ............... 1961 Lakewood 3. Art Gold ................... 1966 Monza 4. Larry Yoffee .............. 1965 Corsa 5. Sally Williams ........... 1966 500 6. Ray Trujillo ............ 1965 Cosa Vert 7. Lube Lubert ........... The Great White Hope 8. Terry Price & Bob Garrett 1966 Monza 9. Larry Blair .............. 1964 Spyder Vert 10. John Wiker ................ 1966 Monza 11. Dat Boi .................... 1966 Corsa 12. Art Gold .................... 1964 Monza 13. Geoff Johnson ................ 1964 Vert 14. Pat Hall ...................... 1964 Vert Unfortunately, because of various problems associated with the Fair itself, the ribbons have been reduced in number to one participation ribbon for each entrant and one Blue Ribbon for every event. Not to worry, we still had a great time all the same. I bet you're dying to know who received the one and only "Best of Show" ribbon given out today by a Commissioner from the NM State Fair. And the winner is... Larry Blair's 1964 Spyder Turbo Vert. Yep, the guy who is protecting us from disease was also recognized for the quality of his car -- as long as it wasn't running! Great going Larry. Even though no member of CNM was tasked with presenting a ribbon at this year's show, I've taken it upon myself as show chairman to make a "virtual" "Best of Show" ribbon presentation. The winner is... The Great White Hope. I don't think I need to make any comment about the extreme quality of Lube's car. Back to a description of the show -- as usual, the weather was perfect and there was almost too much to do and see during our visit. I know I love to attend this show for three things -- Navajo tacos, shopping for bargains at the Manual Lujan building, and CARS. Well, another wonderful Fair Show is now in the books. And with that, do you realize someone born the year of our first show could now legally drink -- 21 years! (hiccup) -- Robert Gold ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ TAOS-TRI STATE 2017 Taos Topics #1 -- Terry Price Taos Pueblo was built between 1000 and 1450 AD, long before the town of Taos was established. The pueblo is considered to be one of the oldest continuously established communities in the United States. There was no Albuquerque, Denver or Colorado Springs at that time. The Indians gathered over a period of time and built a series of homes that in some places are five stories tall. Today, around 1,900 people live near the area in more modern homes, but about 20 people still live in the pueblo year around. Taos Pueblo can be visited and there are tours available. The town of Taos developed next to the pueblo for protection and commerce. Eventually, after various revolts and upheavals, the town of Taos was officially established around 1800. One well known resident of Taos at that time was Kit Carson, who married and established his home in Taos in 1843. His house has become a museum and can be visited today. After the Mexican-American war in 1848, the New Mexico Territory was established, and Taos became the county seat for the New Mexico Territory in 1850. Boundaries were established for several states in the territory, and New Mexico became a State in 1912. In 1915, an art colony was formed in Taos by six artists: Bert Phillips, Ernest Blumenschein, Oscar Berninghaus, Joseph Sharp, E Erving Course and Hurbert Dunton. The society was disbanded in 1972, but by then Taos had been established as the significant art center it still is today. There are several art galleries in Taos, as a result of the art colony, which are popular places to visit today. More on these galleries in a future article. In 1934, Taos was incorporated, in 1956 Taos Ski Valley was started and in 1965 the Taos Rio Grande Gorge Bridge was completed. In the 1960s the town became a gathering place for hippies, "Easy Rider" was filmed there and Taos became the Hippie Capital of the United States. Larry Yoffee, of Corvairs of New Mexico, will be establishing a web site for the Taos Tri-State event. It will be available soon. Some have complained about not being able to register for the Tri-State at the Kachina Lodge but things have been corrected and you can register any time. Please try to register, for your room, before May 3, 2017. To accomplish these drastic changes several significant technology improvements were initiated, starting with the removal of tetra-ethyl lead from the gasoline sold for automobile use. The reason for this was simple. This lead additive, used to improve the octane rating of gasoline, coated the spark plug terminals, and being electrically conductive fouled the plugs preventing them from firing as necessary. With the lead gone, the next step was to improve the quality and intensity of the spark used to ignite the gas/fuel mixture in the cylinders. This required higher voltages and currents. Thus, they produced electronic ignition systems capable of producing big, fat, sparks to do the job. But these high-energy sparks also increased the erosion of the spark plug electrodes. You see, each time a plug fires, the spark vaporizes a few molecules of the electrode tips so that continued use of these spark plugs results in an increase of the electrode gap over time. And as you know, an increase in the gap requires an increasing voltage to have a spark jump across this gap. This is complicated, too, by the fact that it requires different voltages to fire spark plugs depending on certain engine conditions. For example, engine loading (e.g., acceleration) requires a higher voltage. So it is possible for continued use of spark plugs to suffer a gap increase to the point where the ignition system while easily firing plugs in normal operation, will mis-fire when the engine is somewhat stressed by acceleration. Of course, any mis-firing will now release excessive pollutants and is just not permitted in today's automobiles. So how did the car manufacturers reduce plug tip erosion to allow positive assurance that the plugs will last up to 100,000 miles? By making spark plugs electrodes from certain very hard metals that have higher melting temperatures: namely Platinum and Iridium. And by changing the shape and size of the center electrode in these plugs. These changes all allowed the car manufacturers to claim the 100K mile spark plug durability because the electronic ignition systems provided the hot sparks required to fire these new spark plugs. PHOTO: A used Bosch platinum plug for Corvairs. Note the different center electrode shape and construction from the conventional plugs used in Corvairs. These plugs are designed to work with high energy ignition systems. But non-electronic ignition systems are not so kind to Platinum and Iridium plugs. The metals themselves and especially the small contact area of the center electrode require higher voltages and intensity than stock systems usually can provide under stress conditions. In addition, it appears that the center electrode of platinum plugs tends to foul when used with stock-type ignition systems due to lack of spark intensity and/or heat. So experience has shown that Platinum and Iridium spark plugs just are not completely compatible with the Corvair's stock ignition system. And unfortunately, we do not have enough unbiased and independent data on what modifications to the stock system might make these new plug types acceptable. We recommend that you continue to use stock-type replacement plugs for your Corvair. VISION is a publication of VEGAS VAIRS Chapter 891 of CORSA P.O. Box 621925, Las Vegas, NV 89162-192S ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sixtieth Anniversary of Tennis Club of Albuquerque John Wiker Friday, the 9th of September, at about 5:00 PM, Sylvia and Ray Trujillo and I attended the event celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the Tennis club of Albuquerque. We brought our Corvairs to be among a few old cars displayed for an old fashioned Sock Hop. Six cars were displayed. Two 1937 Fords, one Ford Cobra, a 1958 Chevy Impala, Ray's 1965 and my 1966. As people approached the entrance, they took the opportunity to have their pictures taken with the cars. Most stood outside the cars, but a few were adventurous enough to climb in for more pictures, especially the Corvairs which seemed to attract more than their fair share and comments about past histories and driving experiences. At about 7:30, we were invited in for drinks and hors d'oeuvres. I had my fill of Swedish Meatballs and non-alcoholic punch. At about 8:30, dinner was served with beef tips and chicken cordon bleu as the main dishes. If you left hungry, it was your fault. The chicken was so large, I could eat only half and took the rest home to my wife. The weather was pleasant, the company excellent and because Sylvia plays tennis with a lot of the members she did a great job keeping us appraised as to what was happening where and when so we could be near the front of the line. Word was that there were about 120 invited guests at about $65 a ticket. Sometimes it pays to volunteer for some of these off-the-wall events that appear by e-mail on the net. We had a great time and the host was so appreciative that she gave me a phone call on Monday to say thanks for making their night a success. Once again, the Corvair Club comes through. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Five Special CNM'ers have October Birthdays: Jon Anderson Erica Anderson Dan Palmer Bill Reider Terry Price Matthew Shortle There are no anniversaries in October. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ TREASURY REPORT ============= 08-21-2016 to 09-23-2016 ============= ROBERT GOLD ========== ==== ========== =========== ========================================= DATE CHECK# AMOUNT PAYEE DESCRIPTION BALANCE = $4,504.50 ========== ==== ========== =========== ========================================= 2016.08.16 +$ 148.00 Deposit H.Wilvert 12 m CORSA $ 45.00 2016.08.16 +$ Deposit Isotopes Tickets $ 95.00 2016.08.16 +$ Deposit 50/50 for August $ 8.00 2016.08.21 +$ 46.00 Deposit Alan Gold 12 m CNM $ 25.00 2016.08.29 +$ Deposit Isotopes Tickets $ 21.00 2016.08.30 2258 -$ 21.00 R.Gold Isotopes Tickets -$ 21.00 2016.08.30 2259 -$ 33.86 R.Gold Old Route 66 disposal fee -$ 4.00 2016.08.30 -$ R.Gold Car Council Picnic Items -$ 29.86 2016.09.08 2251 -$ 28.22 H.Pittman SEP 2016 Newsletter_Printing -$ 28.22 2016.09.14 +$ 181.00 Deposit B.Reider 26 m CNM $ 50.00 2016.09.14 +$ Deposit F.Edeskuty 26 m CNM $ 50.00 2016.09.14 +$ Deposit J.Pittman 26 m CNM $ 50.00 2016.09.21 +$ Deposit Isotopes Tickets $ 31.00 ========== ==== ========== =========== ========================================= 2016.10.01 OCT NEWSLETTER = END OF PREVIOUS MONTH ==================== $4,796.42 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ============================================================================ | October 2016 | November 2016 | December 2016 | | Su Mo Tu We Th Fr Sa | Su Mo Tu We Th Fr Sa | Su Mo Tu We Th Fr Sa | | 1 | 1 2 3 4 5 | 1 2 3 | | 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 | 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 | 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 | | 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 | 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 | 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 | | 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 | 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 | 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 | | 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 | 27 28 29 30 | 25 26 27 28 29 30 31 | | 30 31 | | | ============================================================================ SAT 01 OCT through SUN OCT 09 -- Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta SUN 02 OCT EARLY! LeRoy's bright red 1960 dominated. Mike Stickler ran our meeting and showed a piston with ceramic coating, the better to reject heat. We had $3,886 in the bank. Hurley Wilvert said he drove a new Prius and found it odd but impressive. Some of us went to the EAA fly-in at Moriarty and there were many airplane photos. Dave Huntoon provided photos of a fleet of Corvair work vans at a plumbing business in Elgin, Illinois in the 1960s. Robert Gold reported on a fabulous State Fair Car Show with 19 Corvairs. Editor Jim wrote a critique of the new Chevrolet Volt which certainly did not get 230 miles per gallon. Incidentally, the 2016 Volt is actually a very impressive car. But can it beat a 2016 Prius? Maybe not. Finally, Eric Schakel's article from the DENVAIR NEWS lamented the absence of gearheads among the younger generation. 2002 Vol 28 Nr 10 #325 The cover featured the famous Galles Chevrolet balloon photo. A guest was Brian Zolna, who years ago was a CNM member while in the military and stationed at KAFB. Joel Nash asked us to revise last month's minutes to state that he was not in violation of city zoning laws after all. Wendell reported our bank account stood at $5537. The Car Council was negotiating with the city about the 2003 car show: would it be back at the museum or would it move to Los Lunas permanently? A new New Mexico resident from Arkansas found his 1968 Corvair did not like our 5,000-foot altitude and he was pointed to Dave Langlois to make adjustments. Did he ever join CNM? President Robert Gold reflected on his year in office, rejoicing that he didn't bring the club's days to an end. He attributed the club's continuing success to great support from many members. Anne Mae reviewed activities of the CNM Ladies and previewed our November "White Elephant Auction and Potluck" extravaganza. Mark Martinek provided an article on what happened after Mary Lou's 1964 convertible engine was rebuilt. Let's just summarize: he installed an electric fuel pump. And finally, along with pages of photos from the State Fair Car Show we reprinted an article on how to safely store your classic car for the winter, and how to safely wake it up. 1995 Vol 21 Nr 10 #241 The cover depicted a California Corvair van with five (!) open doors on the passenger side. The illustration was not photoshopped. A van had been built by surgically joining a front two-thirds section with a back two-thirds section on a lengthened Buick frame. It was powered by a 325-HP Buick V-8 with fuel mileage in the 12-14 MPG range. Only in California. In September Larry invited us to meet at the AMAFCA office because Casa Chevrolet was still being remodeled. We had $1,068.64 in the bank. Bill Reider reported that the NMCCC swap meet and the State Fair car show were on the same weekend. Corvair belt buckles had arrived and were $16 each. We planned an auction, a photo rally, a visit to the Marine Corps Band and our annual Christmas party. Monthly committee meetings for the CORSA convention continued. Larry Blair's "swan song" as president reviewed our accomplishments during the last year. Our board decided we would accept no paid advertising in the Newsletter. Bill Reider was editing the third edition of his Care & Feeding booklet. Inexplicably, the newsletter mentioned Rush Limbaugh's analysis of the career of our friend Ralph Nader. Since this is a family newsletter, we attempted no analysis of the career of Mr Limbaugh. Tech tips: cleaning your old steering box, fixing dim tail lights and the world's best concrete driveway cleaner. Kay Sutt sent a report on the State Fair Car Show in which Kay's 1964 convertible took first place. 1988 Vol 14 Nr 10 #157 The cover was a Mark Morgan fantasy of a Corvair-based hot air balloon. This theme was later adopted for our 1996 CORSA International Convention. We had $562 to spend. We planned our work at the NMCCC swap meet. Bill Lawless asked for help for planning the Aspencade for next month. Richard Twilley announced he was quitting the Corvair business and would auction off all his tools and parts. Sylvan reported on escorting the Dare-Vair from Clines Corners to Albuquerque. Steve Gongora reported on a trip to Las Vegas and a tour of world-famous Montezuma Castle. 1981 Vol 7 Nr 10 #73 On the cover, U.S. Navy Lieutenant Mark Morgan and his Avis Greenbrier were being passed by a tiny Fiat as he continued his series of articles on driving in various foreign countries. This month: Italy. Robert Gold was a new member this month. Bob Phillips gave a talk on body work. The "Dummy of the Month" (was that Sylvan?) told about buttoning up an engine, complete with sheet metal, carbs, fuel lines and throttle linkage, only to realize that the fan belt could not be installed. Why? Because the fan bearing, the fan and the fan pulley were sitting on a shelf, not on the engine. Tech tips: Use the correct short bolts to install door hinges because long ones will dimple the door skin. What is the correct lubricant for positraction. How to prevent thermostat breakage. How to fix early model water leaks. And, there was a handy tire-pressure table. 1974 (no newsletter) At our eighth meeting we were led by Francis Boydston in planning our first Winrock Car Show. It turned out to be a great success. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Enchanted Corvairs Newsletter is published monthly by Corvairs of New Mexico, chartered Chapter #871 of CORSA, the Corvair Society of America.
