I am sure glad the voting is over and the smear messages have stopped along with all the unsolicited phone calls. Even worse is my inability to overcome the hour fall back from Daylight Saving. Now instead of waking up at 05:30, I'm up at 04:30. Will it ever end? A big thank you goes out to Rita & Steve Gongora. Once again they proved to be outstanding hosts at our annual Bingo night. Although there were only 19 Corvair members there, the crowd swelled to about 30 with the Gongoras' relatives and employees participating. Word has it that the Bingo brought in $94 and the Silent Auction raised $124. I'm sure that our treasurer will have a more exact accounting in his report. Thanks to Anne Mae for sorting the auction bills and thanks to Vickie for volunteering to take all the items not bid on to the Storehouse, our designated non-profit organization that we are donating to this year at our Christmas party. Our Christmas party is the 10th of December at 2:30 at the Highland Senior Center, hosted by past president Ray Trujillo. By the time you read this, my wife and I will be in New York watching the THANKSGIVING PARADE live for the first time -- one of her bucket list wishes. Look for us, we will be shivering and waving a New Mexico flag. Until next time, goodby. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ CORRALES HARVEST FESTIVAL CAR SHOW Ray Trujillo Hello everyone! At our October membership meeting I informed members of the Corrales Harvest Festival taking place on Sunday, October 16th. I asked who would be able to attend with their Corvairs for display and no one raised their hand as most had other plans. Since I had already promised Denise Stramel, the event chairwoman, that CNM would have some Corvairs there for the show I then went into scramble mode to drum up some members to attend but to no avail. Anyway, I then thought, call your boys and convince them to drive their Corvairs to the show with me. To make a long story short they came and we had a great time showing our Corvairs and also enjoyed much of the festival's offerings. The festival is a really family fun event and hopefully next year it will be something our club can participate in again. -- Ray ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ November General Membership Meeting Minutes - 2016.11.02 Anne Mae Gold Called to order at 7:02 PM President: The spelling of the name of our newest member is Carl Clasmeyer. Please suggest any events you would like to participate in to John Wiker or Lube Lubert. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ BOARD MEETING MINUTES ADDENDUM Jim Pittman Note: the "unforeseen circumstances" that Anne Mae referred to at the board meeting started when Heula fell on her way to the restroom. The confusion of attending to her, calling 911, waiting for the EMTs and the ambulance and getting her on the way to Presbyterian Hospital pretty much torpedoed the meeting. After a fun stay of many hours in the ER and then in the hospital (if you believe the "fun" part of this story I know of a very fine bridge up in Taos County, wonderful view, outstanding construction and in good repair, affordable price, that my realtor will be happy to sell you) she is feeling much better now. Nothing broken, no lasting damage, she is slowly but steadily recovering. Thanks to all who helped her out after a potential deadly accident. Special thanks to Ray and John for getting our car safely to the hospital parking area. -- Jim ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ THREE STRIKES YER OUT!! A Three Day Walmart Saga Robert Gold Having a tire mounted on a stock rim is usually an easy affair. I've had it done many times over the years at several places. Most of the time I have my mounted tire back within the hour. Sadly for me that wasn't the case over the weekend at Walmart Quick Lube Express on Carlisle. Day one -- Things began simply enough. I purchased a tire from Walmart.com. It was even a bargain. I went to the store and arranged to have it mounted on a rim that I carried in. When they told me it would take a couple of hours (!) so I went home and waited for the call that didn't come for FIVE hours. They left a message that said the rim had a problem and would not fit the tire. Day two -- OK, I then brought a second rim to the store and they said they would call. The sun set on day two without a call. Day three -- I returned to the store to pick up my tire. This time it was actually mounted and seemed ready to go, until I went to pay. In a surprising turn, the amount was LESS than I expected. Fearing more trouble I asked them for a breakdown on the charges. I found to my chagrin that they didn't spin balance the tire. Why? The response was that it was an extra charge and that I had to request the balancing. That was a first for me. All the other shops I had patronized had either included the balancing in the mounting package or had tried to sell me that service when I had the tire mounted. I guess I had run into a shop that didn't want to sell me a service unless I asked for it. I've been under the impression that balancing was an important part of making a tire/rim combo safe for travel. Rather than invest more waiting time for the spin balance I paid my bill and got outta there. I needed to return to the land of tire reality. Discount Tire here I come! When all was said and done here is a box score of my Walmart Lube Express experiences. Who knows, your mileage may vary: Strike one -- Time to not mount one tire -- 5 hours Strike two -- Time required to get the tire mounted -- 3 days Strike three -- Confidence I have in Walmart's service and judgement -- ZERO. So if you have all the time in the world and you don't care if they have done a complete job Walmart is the place for you. -- Robert Gold ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ THAT'S A WRAP -- October Car Council Meeting Robert Gold I first want to explain the title to this report. "That's a wrap" is one of those phrases the movie industry uses to describe the end of filming. By the same token, the October meeting of the Car Council represents the end of the year for the organization since we have no meeting until next January when the fun and games begin for a new year. By the time we reach this point in the year the energy level tends to wain. This fact was brought home to me when I pulled into the Old Car Garage's parking lot 15 minute before the meeting was scheduled to begin. I had no trouble parking because there were almost no cars there. I worried that the meeting had been called off or moved. But that wasn't the case. It was simply a lack of interest on the part of the reps. By the time the meeting began enough reps had showed up to fill only half of the meeting room. But rest assured, Corvairs of New Mexico was represented. Now on to the meeting... The meeting was called to order promptly at 7:30 by the President, Jamie Saavedra. All the officers were there with the exception of Board Member, Perry Key, who was recovering from a nasty infection. Next we welcomed a new member club to the Council, the Challenger Car Club. It nice to see new blood come into the organization. It was then reported that everyone had received the newsletter this month. This made me very happy since I'm in charge of sending it out. The Treasurer reported a balance in the checking account of more than $20,000. In response to a suggestion that some of those funds be put in a CD the Treasurer said our two existing CD's aren't returning much interest, so there is no real reason to purchase another CD. I then gave my report about the website. We had upwards of 300 people look at the website in the prior week. I also mentioned that the draft documentation I was working on for the site had been distributed to Joyce Clements and Jamie. I assured the Council I would have a final version ready when we met again in January. We then took a bit of time to present Joyce Clements a certificate of appreciation for all the work she does on behalf of the Council. It is safe to say that if the Clements were not around we wouldn't be doing half the activities we do during the year, not to mention all the work Joyce does to put out the newsletter. As we CNM'ers know, a newsletter is a very important glue that holds an organization together. Joyce gave us a report on the recent Swap Meet. It was good to hear that the event resulted in a surplus of more than $5,000. Remember that it this money that funds the other Council events during the year. Joyce said some of the surplus was a result of a modest hike in the vendor fees. Joyce then noted that the dates of next year's meet will be Sept. 23-25. It's never too early to start planning! Joyce did say she would like for someone to work with her on next year's event so she can share the joy... Joyce also mentioned that next year's Museum Car Show is scheduled for around May 21. Because the Museum will be celebrating its 50th anniversary, we decided to have an exhibit of cars from 1967. Any of you CNM'ers who have a 1967 Corvair should consider entering the show and have your ride as part of the special exhibit section! We then had a short discussion about the current failings of MVD. It appears that the new computer system that came on line in October is having significant problems. Another rep noted that he learned that year-of-manufacture tags are technically assigned to the owner, not the car, so you can't transfer the tag to another person if you sell the car. I guess the tag would then be simply wall art if you didn't get another car. With that the meeting came to a close. Jamie adjourned the meeting at 8:05. I look forward to seeing the gang again next January! -- Robert Gold ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ THANKSGIVING Jim Pittman Today as I work on what could well be my last CNM newsletter it is Thanksgiving Day. We did not go anywhere this year and being at home all day seems to trigger philosophical thoughts about what it all means. I don't mean the myth of the Pilgrims and Indians or the turkey with stuffing or the taste of delicious dishes or the football games or the glorious shopping frenzies on Black Friday. Just what the word "thanks" means. The winter holidays of Thanksgiving and Christmas are an excitement-filled time of relatives, friends, food, gifts and cheer overcoming the darkness of long cold nights. Just what do we have to be thankful for this year? I am thankful for our great club of Corvair fans. Thankful for those who were with us in the past, who generously shared their energy, enthusiasm, organization, talents and skills with the rest of us. I am grateful for those who are still around, going to meetings, driving Corvairs, organizing and participating in car shows. I am thankful for long-gone Chevrolet engineers who designed engines that still run, many of them anyway, fifty years after being assembled. I am thankful for the wide-open blue skies and clear air of New Mexico and the vistas of nearby or far away mountain ranges and blue highways I have driven on hundreds of times. Why do we keep supporting our small Corvair Club here in New Mexico? Because in some degree each of us is thankful for the opportunity to own or drive or just be near our historic automobiles and their unique, priceless owners. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ TAOS-TRI STATE -- JUNE 2-4 2017 Taos Topics #3 -- Terry Price Taos is a favorite travel destination in the state, and will be a fun place for the 2017 Tri-State. The Kachina Lodge is hosting a welcome hour Friday evening and a late evening bonfire is planned in the patio featuring Native American dancers. It will be a great time to share Corvair information and lots of Corvair lore. Saturday morning will be the parade through town and the show and shine. That afternoon there will be some free time to enjoy some places in the area. Two places that could be of interest are the Greater World Earthship Biostecture and the Rio Grande Gorge and Bridge. The Earthship Biostecture is a totally sustainable house made from recycled materials. It is built to generate its own electricity, collect its own water which can be recycled four times, grow its own food inside and out, cool itself and manage its own sewage. At the same time it is modern and comfortable. This is quite a site that is in harmony with the environment. The structure is on the other side of the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge. The bridge is a cantilever bridge that crosses the Rio Grande which runs 650 feet below. You may choose to stop on the west side of the bridge, and a turn around on the east. Of course, you can walk to the middle of the bridge and take a look over the edge, something I probably won't try. Jim added photos from a 2004 trip with Heula and her daughter Mary. For more info on the Tri-State, Taos and the surrounding area and register your name and meal selection for the banquet go to WWW.corsaturbo180usa.com. Make your room registration with the Kachina Lodge at 575-758-2275 or toll free at 800-522-4462. Mention Tri-State Corvair meet for the special rate which will include a hot breakfast in the restaurant. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ MAYBE IT IS JUST ME, BUT AFTER 50 YEARS IT KIND OF FEELS LIKE DEJA VU Fred Edeskuty While there are die hard Corvair enthusiasts who daily drive their Corvairs, I am like the majority who prefer to relegate their Corvairs for fun drive status and execute the everyday driving chores in a more modern ride. While I've been around long enough to have daily driven a Corvair back in the 1960s, the modern comfort and reliable performance sure fits my 50+ years older body today. In the fall of 2012 my "daily" turbocharged Subaru Legacy wagon's blown engine left me with the dilemma - do I repair or replace. Being a hard core three-pedal type and also a wagon fan, because of the potential for the right balance of performance with utility, replacement choices were slim. I quickly gravitated towards a Volkswagen Jetta TDI SportWagon. It was similar in size to the Subaru and it possessed fun-to-throw-around handling, an excellent 6-speed transmission, plus tremendous low end torque, all while maintaining great claimed fuel mileage. Being a former diesel mechanic and diesel pick-up owner for decades, going diesel was an easy choice. And even though I was giving up all-wheel-drive and over 100 horsepower I went ahead and bought one of the first 2013 models delivered in Albuquerque. The low end torque available in every day driving made up for the horsepower loss and a set of Nokian Hakkapeliittas on all four corners in winter rendered AWD unnecessary, except for maybe the deepest snow conditions. For me anyway, the VW has proven to be the nearly perfect daily driver, plus the fuel economy has been nothing short of phenomenal. The car has averaged close to 45 mpg in the close to 60,000 miles it has logged, and this is with living in the mountains at 8000 feet with the closest town a 9200-foot pass away. Keeping fuel records since new, the worst tank mileage obtained was 38 mpg during our deepest snow period and the best over 50 mpg on more than one interstate road trip. The economy combined with the real world performance seemed almost too good to be true. Unfortunately, in September 2015 this proved to be the case when dieselgate was first exposed. Now after more than a year the courts and VW have agreed to a buy-back or fix resolution. Again I found myself in a similar dilemma as four years ago - do I replace, or let VW attempt to come up with a fix I can accept. There currently is no acceptable fix in sight. This unfortunately makes sense since the only feasible solutions almost certainly requires the addition of a selective reduction catalyst, and considering all the supporting sub-systems would result in a packaging nightmare. Even if they do figure out the packaging there are still long term reliability concerns, never mind whatever power or fuel economy losses would certainly occur. Living in a non-emission area (mountain environment, far from cities) I also considered just not doing anything. Renewing the registration recently gave me a dose of reality, however: New Mexico would only renew for one year! That gives strong indication that if not fixed the car would become an expensive paperweight, emission area or otherwise. Much as I hated to do it, the buy-back paperwork with VW has been signed and now I'm waiting for the appointment to return the car. Fortunately, I never got rid of the Subaru with the bad engine and during the year the courts have been working on the settlement a new engine has been procured and the Subaru fixed. So I have a replacement, the old Subaru, at exactly one half the fuel mileage. VW is giving me close to what I initially paid, which will pay for the engine and several upgrades done at the same time with enough left over to buy all my gasoline for a long, long time. You may ask, Deja vu, why Deja vu? Because many of the feelings generated from the unfortunate events regarding the Corvair in the 1960s were brought out again with dieselgate. Nothing like once again, 50 years later, driving another car under the public "scorn." There is no reason to go into the negative comments I received back then, mainly from the non-auto enthusiast public and dyed-in-the-wool "Murrican" mechanics, because history has proven the Corvair was actually a great car. The only real crime, if one must be found, was that GM with the Corvair dared to be different. The same cannot be said with VW and the TDI today. No question, VW definitely screwed up in a major way. But my anger and frustration is just as much directed to our own Federal government. Yes, VW should pay, but I'm having kind of a hard time believing that prematurely scrapping a perfectly functional car and in essence prematurely manufacturing another new car is really better for our environment. Being forced to change cars when not really ready only increases the frustration. And yes, the TDI is dirty by today's standards and in my case the environment does not have to pay the price for manufacture of an additional new car. But it will, however, pay for me now burning twice the fuel. Maybe I'm just thinking this too hard, who knows. Again, and I'll never know, all of this might be better understood looking back at it 50 years from now. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A TALE ABOUT EMISSIONS TESTING Robert Gold I've always assumed that if a vehicle is subject to emissions testing in Bernalillo County that the testing was tied together with the renewal of my tags, sorta like conjoined twins. By this I thought in order to renew my license plate for 2 years I'd need an emissions that that was good for 2 years also. -- WRONG -- Rather than being two attached twins, emissions and car tags are really attached by a flexible bungee cord. Here is what I found out at my recent visit to the MVD: I had an emissions certificate good for one year only. You can imagine my surprise when the lovely clerk at MVD asked me if I wanted to renew my tags on my 85 El Camino for 2 years. Being a "smart aleck" I responded that yes, I would like 2 years, but my test was only for 1 year. Not to worry, the clerk responded. She said that as long as I had an emissions certificate that hadn't expired I could renew that registration for the full 2 years. The guy ahead of me only had 4 days on his certificate, but he left with a year's sticker. MVD, after it determines that you have a current valid emissions test will renew your tag, but they are sorta loose on keeping track of a subsequent test. For example, I have a 1 year certificate, but at the end of that year I need to renew the certificate or the registration is revoked. In that last case the tag says 2018, but the computer says expired. Huh? So remember, you don't have to sweat the emissions stuff at MVD. Just make sure it hasn't expired and your are good to go. Just remember, you still have to do the emissions, just not have to return to MVD in some cases for a new sticker. So you don't believe me? Come on by my house and see my shiny new 2018 sticker on the Elco. I'll even treat you to some leftover trick or treat candy. -- Robert Gold ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Happy Birthday wishes to Seven CNM'ers born in December: Ruth Boydston ----- 91 years old! Could the driver be Santa Claus? No, there's no red Santa Claus suit. President Pat Hall said, drive your Corvair! Guests were Duke McCraken and Larry Yoffee. We had $3,965.74 in the bank. LeRoy told us the February garage tour would be to the J & R Vintage Auto Museum. Heula siad she'd announce the winner of the "Younger Members" contest at the Christmas party. Ray Trujillo said we all had a great time at the annual Bingo/Potluck/Auction party. Jim discussed the "100% CORSA Rule" and listed those who, he thought, were active CORSA members. Fast-forward to 2015 when this became a non-issue. An index to the contents of the newsletter for 2009 and a page of photos of all twelve covers closed. 2002 Vol 28 Nr 12 #327 Steve Gongora loaded items for the auction into his red Rampside. The auction was reported to be an outstanding one! Robert Gold ran our November meeting (twenty members, two guests) at Galles Chevrolet. Guest Roger Pape soon joined the club. Per Wendell, we had $5780 in the bank. Robert told about a pleasant process with the state bureaucracy getting "Horselesss Carriage" license plates for his cars. Mark reported that past member Dave Patten had passed away. Bill reminded us of the on-going competition for the best logo design for our upcoming Tri-State. We discussed our plans for a year's worth of events for 2003. LeRoy reported on plans for the Raton Tri-State. Unusual opportunities: a trip to Trinity Site and a Corvair gathering in Mesquite, Nevada. Dennis Pleau, applying for admission to the Dummy of the Month Club, sent a story about an escalating oil leak that led to pulled threads and helicoil inserts -- then it developed, the gasket couldn't seal because the pan was seating up against the lower engine shrouding, leaving a gap! From the Internet, a story about whether it was possible to get married in heaven. An answer was provided. Getting a divorce in heaven, however, was a different matter. Also stolen from the Internet, a set of hymns selected for different vocations and driving styles. Finally, an index to all the articles, cover art, tech tips and jokes from the 12 issues published during 2002. 1995 Vol 21 Nr 12 #243 On the cover, Santa and Rudolph, reproduced from Mark Morgan's first CNM newsletter. Our November meeting was a combined pot-luck and auction. The September NMCCC swap meet was a modest success, clearing about $1050, and CNM would receive $100 for two days' worth of gate duty. We had a report on progress on restoring the car to be raffled at the convention. A new edition of Bill Reider's CARE & FEEDING book was hot off the press. Bill McClellan reported that Francis was back in the hospital for a minor tune-up following the major overhaul he had last month. Mark Domzalski reported on a very nice time for his first attendance at the Great Fan Belt Toss. He thanked all who contributed to a great auction and pot luck, with Larry Blair's famous Elk Chili getting high marks. Mark also mentioned national and local news coverage of our convention plans. Bill told how to CARE & FEED your Corvair in the preventative maintenance department. Some tech tips from Click & Clack were pretty much useless except to produce chuckles. Finally, cartoons that mentioned cars with "engines in the back" and the 1995 Index wrapped up the issue. 1988 Vol 14 Nr12 #159 The cover featured reversed Christmas trees that said "samtsirhC yrreM" so you needed a mirror to read the greeting. VP Tom Martin ran our meeting. We had $562 in the bank. Bill Hector's column said Mother Nature clearly prefers engines in the rear, giving as proof the cheetah, the kangaroo and the deer. He said Detroit has been wrong for years, only getting one car right: the Corvair. Our Executive Board suggested events for the coming year, including a garage tour, a rally, a car show, a Tri-State Meet, a picnic, an aspencade and a Christmas party. Tom Martin's "Ptek Ptip" article described how he purchased a car in a distant city, it mysteriously stopped on the way home, he checked everything he could think of to no effect, then finally realized it was -- out of gas! Did Tom ever get formally inducted into the Dummy of the Month Club 1981 Vol 7 Nr 12 # 75 The cover featured the new stainless-steel-skinned DeLorian sports car with the engine in the rear! Our treasury stood at $338.00. George Morin's tech tip on how the fuel gage sender works, how it goes bad and how to fix it was well received. We discussed how we could help get Corvair clubs established in remote parts of the state. The CNM constitution and amendments was published. 1974 In December we received in the mail the first issue of the club newsletter, edited, typed, copied, folded, stapled, stamped and distributed by club co-founder Mark L. Morgan. There were thirty-five members on the club roster. A few who were on that roster and are still club members include Steve Gongora, Mark Morgan, Jim Pittman, Bill Reider. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ INDEX TO ENCHANTED CORVAIRS NEWSLETTER 2016 EVERY MONTH: President's Column Calendar Dues Due Birthdays & Anniversaries Meeting Minutes Treasury Report Board Meeting Minutes Seven Years Ago JAN Celebracion Navidena ...........................
