Thinking he was not feeling well, I did not disturb him but went back to our meeting room and left my briefcase on the table next to his. I went back to the front and he was still there. I waited around a few more minutes and eventually Anne Mae and Robert arrived and John stood up and we went to our meeting. He claimed he was not in pain but he looked like he had come straight from the hospital. As some know, John has had kidney stone problems for many weeks and they finally did the surgery to remove one or more, and he was in recovery mode. I suppose his Prius drove him to Highland. Maybe he has equipped it with a Tesla auto-pilot module? At any rate, he was there and he ran our meeting. If John were writing this article he'd tell us more than we ever wanted to know about kidney stones. He might also have something to say about how he and Anne are making the transition from being city mice to being country mice! He'd certainly have a few things to say about upcoming events, viz: * We need suggestions and organizers for club events for the rest of the year. * Club Breakfasts? When, where? * A Club Picnic? When, where? * Another TUNA? Remember, Pat Hall has volunteered to host it, we just need a date and topic. * Not too early to think about our Christmas party. * Be sure to attend the Garage Tour on February 25th. We were there in 2007 and we had a great time. Thought for the month: what can we do to encourage participation by our members this year? It's the same small group who do all the work and a somewhat larger small group who attend breakfasts and other events. -- Your Editor ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Garage Tour - Jay Hertz Garage Saturday - February 25 10:00 to 12:00 Terry Price Hope to see you at the Jay Hertz garage. Jay has a collection of Chevrolets and a few Fords from the early thirties. They are all beautifully restored by Jay. He also has a wide selection of memorabilia which is nicely displayed. The address for Jay's garage is 2420 unit I, Midtown Place NE. This garage is located just east of the intersection of Midtown Road and Alexander NE. Turn north off of Midtown Road. Look for the Mattress Factory on your left. After the tour, lunch at the new Range Cafe, 2200 Menaul NE. See you there! -- Terry ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ February Membership Meeting -- 2017.02.01 Anne Mae Gold Approval of minutes Officer Reports President (John Wiker) The move is complete! John has no land line, please call him on the cell. John has received 2 nominations for the Ike Meissner Award. If you would like to nominate someone, please send John your form or email him at wikerj63@yahoo.com and name your nominee and why they are deserving of the award. VP (Lube) Nothing to report. Treasurer (Robert Gold) Current balance is $4,874.28 Committee Reports Membership (Larry Yoffee) New member recruited by Pat Hall. She bought two Corvairs from him. No more information so far. Editor (Jim Pittman) Was not present but sent word that the newsletter deadline is Friday February 17. Please send in your articles. Tri-State (Terry Price) Has not had luck with a guest speaker, but he still has one more thread to follow. Hope the fish bites! Robert has put together the award and car show entry forms, he just needs to get them to Ray for printing. The Communique will be running an ad for the next couple of months. Two months will be free and we will pay for one month. Car Council (Robert Gold) The last meeting was not well attended. The Porsche Club is a new member. They have a moto-cross once a month that is open to all. They are looking to donating money to some organization to promote car culture. We suggested that they may want to have a table set up at the Museum Car Show where kids can build a model car... either from a kit or a wooden car. The Museum Car Show focus year is 1967. Terry discovered that the NM phone number for the Kachina Lodge is wrong, the last two numbers were transposed. He will send in a correction for the next newsletter. Merchandise (Vickie Hall) Was not present but sent the Valentine candy and tops. Thank You! You would have enjoyed watching most everyone spinning their tops during the meeting. Upcoming Events FEB 04 Toy Train Swap Meet 9:00 AM - 2:00 PM at 5101 Indian School Rd NE, Netherwood Park Church of Christ. Check out their web site: www.ttosnmd.ord FEB 03-04-05 Super Nationals Car Show at Expo New Mexico. Eddie Munster (Butch Patrick) will be in attendance. Meet at 7:00 AM at Hotel Albuquerque in Old Town. New Business Only twelve members were in attendance. Does anyone have suggestions for increasing attendance? We are looking for an emcee for the Anniversary Dinner. Since there were no volunteers, it will fall to Lube unless someone steps up. Dave Huntoon needs some cylinder heads for his 102. Please call him if you have anything he can rebuild. We went around the room and shared tales. Old Business Despite the bad weather, breakfast at Jimmy's was wonderful... good food and good company. The 50/50 was $14.00 and was won by Tarmo Sutt. He donated his $7.00 jackpot to the Sunshine Committee. Robert pointed out that Carl's convertible is a perfect fit for the Museum Car Show theme... a 1968 model, it was actually built in 1967! Vice President (Lube Lubert) Pat got a new hydrolic press. Lube and Pat used it yesterday. Secretary (Anne Mae Gold) No report. Treasurer (Robert Gold) $5,114.28 as of today. Membership (Larry Yoffee) Vickie mailed the application form and dues for a new member who bought two Corvairs from Pat: Natalie Robison. Merchandise (Vickie Hall) Not present and no report. Editor (Jim Pittman) Friday February 17 is the newsletter deadline. Sunshine: No one was present, so no report. Tri-State (Terry Price) Kay Sutt sent a photo of the layout of the quilt. The quilt will be raffled off at Tri-State. Larry shared a logo for the Tri-State that had the member club logos together. Terry told about contacting Eva Maguire who put together a "Meet the Makers" series of talks. Joe Casey was involved with Corvair production and was the supervisor of the Corvair Room. The club will pay for his room and board if he comes out for the Tri-State. In March the Communique will have a display ad for the Tri-State. Terry will have a proposed budget for the board at the next meeting. Should there be alcoholic beverages at the banquet? The hotel has a bar. We are not opposed to people drinking at the banquet, but we do not feel the need to set up a cash bar in the banquet room since people can patronize the hotel bar if they wish. There will be a DJ for the Show and Shine. Larry wants to remind us that you must order your T-shirt by May 1. Shirts will be available at the Tri-State, but they must be pre-ordered and pre-paid. Vegan meals can be prepared for the banquet, just ask ahead of time. How do we want to decide on the attendance award? Terry wants to set the rules in advance so that other clubs will know how the count will be done. We decided that the count should be based on our definition of club membership and what the person puts on the registration form. Members are the dues-paying member plus spouse plus children living at home.Members who belong to more than one club will be counted for each of the clubs that they specify on the registration form. If a person brings a Corvair to the car show and fills out a registration form, but does not attend the banquet, that person will be counted toward the club they belong to. Larry mentioned two sites for members to visit: Corvair Owners Group (on Facebook) and corvaircenter.com where there are lots of people who chime in from all over the world. The Wikers, the Golds, and the Prices are all planning to go up to Taos on Thursday. Ike Meissner Award: Based on nominations received, Lube and John will decide on the person to receive the award. after tonight's meeting. Robert will ask Art Gold to set up a slide show for the Anniversary dinner as we had last year. Who's interested in a baseball game in July? Adjourned ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A SLOW START January Car Council Meeting Robert Gold I've always found that my energy level drops when it's dark and cold outside. However, being your Council Rep motivated me to go out into the cold and dark to attend the first Council meeting of the year. This was not the fact for many of the Council reps. When the meeting began most of the seats were empty. The few of us who did attend carried on and here is a report of that meeting. After Jamie Saavedra called the meeting to order we were first introduced to the President of the Porsche Club who paid his $10 and joined the Council. I don't know if you are aware that to become a member of the Council your club needs to pay a registration fee. That's all the money you will ever owe the Council. In order to be a member in good standing you just need to attend meetings and help out with Council functions. Following this, our Treasurer, Joe Ballengee, gave his report. The Council has lots of money in its bank account and in two CD's. We then talked about the Board Meeting I attended about two weeks ago. Joe talked about the elements of the budget for 2017. Total expenses were estimated to be just shy of $19,000. This was slightly up from 2016. Those in attendance then approved the budget. Another topic from the Board meeting was how to spend some of the money we have in the bank in order to promote the car hobby. The idea was to donate either money or equipment to a worthy cause and use the recognition to further our hobby. After a bit of discussion we decided to look into the distribution of model car kits. The idea is to interest young people in classic cars. Joyce Clements volunteered to research a possible recipient for our donation and to identify where we could get kits at a discount. Joe Ballengee, a member of the Model Car Club, was very helpful in describing our options. After finishing our Board meeting discussion, we turned to Council events for 2017. Joyce talked about the Museum Car Show, scheduled for May 21. This year is the 50th anniversary of the Albuquerque Museum, so in honor of that event we will be featuring classic cars from 1967. Since I graduated high school in 1967, I guess that makes me a classic.... Joyce said it's a bit early to discuss the Swap Meet in any detail. She did note that we will be expanding the area we will be using for the next meet due to increasing attendance at the event. Finally we voted to have the next Council Picnic at the same place as last year. We liked how close it was to town and how nice the site is. The only downside is the cost, which seems to increase a lot from year to year. We ended the meeting with a talk about upcoming car events in general. Please take a look at the website (nmcarcouncil.com) or our facebook page for more information about all the many events that take part both in our area and outside our State. With that the meeting adjourned and I again had to go out into the dark and cold. -- Robert Gold ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ REMEMBERING MARYALICE SCHEFLOW 1930-2017 Scheflow, MaryAlice If you listen, there are a few less stories being told. MaryAlice Scheflow, age 86, possibly the first true social medium, passed away on Feb. 7, 2017 with her daughters Lynn, Tibi and Alice Kenny at her bedside. MaryAlice loved talking, celebrating & when needed, sympathizing with anyone who was sharing their tale. Her fascination in the experiences of others most likely started shortly after her birth in Rockford, Illinois to Leroy and Alice Foss, and where she created many tales with her older brother Addison. Her family summered at Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, where her relationship started with Oliver, her husband for 65 years who passed away in August. They raised a family in Michigan and Ohio, as Ollie was a mechanical engineer contributing to our nation's "race to space." Regardless of their residency, MaryAlice was always active in both charitable causes and bridge groups. This remained true when they retired in 1991 to New Mexico where she enjoyed being known as "MaryAlice from Corrales." Just as in their other locales, they developed a rich group of friends of all generations. Indeed, many peers of her daughters considered MaryAl to have played an integral role in their upbringings. In addition to the loss this vast group that now resides across our nation surely feels, the storyteller "who was otherwise known lovingly as Gran" will be missed by Corrigan & Atticus Kenny, her grandsons. Their father Jim began serving as a sounding board to MaryAlice when he was age 15; he soon became a character in many of the stories told at her kitchen table on Glenview Drive in Avon Lake, Ohio. The quiet from MaryAlice's absence won't last long when her family & friends celebrate her life through storytelling when gathering at Corrales' Village Pizza (4266 Corrales Rd.) this Sun., Feb. 12, 12-4 p.m. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to . Published in Albuquerque Journal, Feb. 11-12, 2017 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Taos Tri State June 2-4 2017 Taos Topics #5 Joe Casey To Speak At Tri-State Terry Price Who is Joe Casey, you ask? For the 1969 model year only 6,000 Corvairs were scheduled to be manufactured. The last few of these Corvairs were assembled by hand in the "Corvair Room" at the General Motors Willow Run Plant. Joe Casey was the supervisor of the room and will give an interesting talk at our awards banquet. You won't want to miss it! Another addition to the Tri-State Show and Shine will be Kevin Casaus of "Gay Rhythm Productions" providing music from the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's during the show. He will also be announcing the winners of a number of raffles and prizes during the Show and Shine. We will be listening to Kevin's sound system during our banquet. The Points for the Attendance Award will be awarded as follows: * All who attend should fill out a registration form. * One point will be given to the member registering for the Taos Tri-State. * One point will be given to the registered spouse of the member. * One point will be given for each immediate family member registered. * One point will be given to any member registering his/her Corvair for the Show-and-Shine who for any reason does not attend the Banquet. * One point will be given to the spouse of a member registering his/her Corvair for the Show-and-Shine, if present, who for any reason does not attend the Banquet. * If the registrant is a member of more than one club, they can add the same number of points for that club as well. * All points will be recorded from the information you enter on your registration form when you check in with us in Taos. We want to count every person participating in the Tri-State and have a count of those present from every club as well as any not affiliated with any CORSA chapter. Finally, if anyone has anything to donate to the Tri-State for prizes, please let me know right away! Contact me at my pricet150@gmail.com email account. Remember to reserve your room at The Kachina Lodge in Taos by calling 505-522-4462 or 575-758-2275. Ask for Cheryl and don't forget to mention "Corvair Tri-State" for special room rates. Rooms are filling up fast, so don't delay! You also need to go to Larry Yoffee's web site: corsaturbo180usa.com for T-shirt orders and meal selections. This must be done by May 1st. Attached is a photo of the quilt-top, to let you know what it will look like. It should be finished by early March, and if it ready for the March meeting, I'll send it along with Tarmo. Hope knowing this lets you tick one more item off your to-do list, Terry. Jim, can you put the following note in the next newsletter for me? Thanks! The Tri-state rally in Taos is only three months away now, June 2-4. I'm eagerly looking forward to seeing everyone from all the clubs at the Kachina Lodge. It is one of my favorite venues for the meet because that central 'plaza' with seating is a great place to meet and visit, and the circular interior driveway of the hotel provides a private 'mini' car-display' for all the Corvair folks at the meet. I was asked to make the raffle quilt this year. It will be a T-shirt quilt, 60" x 60" with flannel backing - the perfect thing to wrap up in for next year's cold January Super Bowl, when we hope our friends from the Rocky Mountain and Pikes Peak club can cheer on their local guys once more -- sorry, if you are a fan for another team. The top is pieced and it will be finished soon, well in advance of the meet. Thanks to everyone in the Club who so quickly and generously donated T-shirts for the project. That kind of cooperation is what makes Corvairs of NM such a great club. The members of CNM are absolutely THE BEST! Thanks, all! -- Kay Sutt ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ NEW MEMBER Vickie Hall We would like to welcome our newest member, Natalie Robison, to our CNM family. Natalie has a very interesting profession. She works out of the Bosque del Apache Reserve as a fire-fighter and a fire program tech. She owns two Corvairs, both 1962s. One is a convertible, the other is a coupe. Natalie travels quite a bit, due to her job, but says that she will attend as many meetings as she possibly can. His contribution would be a book with information on the club such as how the club was founded, meeting times and location, a list of the current officers, and our constitution. He would include basic information on the Corvair such as a tune-up guide, a few how-to articles and a cross-reference of parts and part numbers. Bill put together this book and distributed draft copies at the March 1991 board meeting. The book had 32 pages with maybe four more pages to be added. He projected the cost at about a dollar a copy for an initial run of 200 copies. The Board enthusiastically approved. Bill brought copies of the first edition of the "Care and Feeding of your Corvair" books to our regular meeting on April 3, 1991. I can't find in our published meeting minutes who printed the first run of books, how much it cost to print, or whether members were asked to buy the book. It has become a tradition to give copies of this book with its distinctive yellow cover and club logo to every new member as part of their new member packet. Over the years Bill revised and reprinted the book several times. It traveled beyond our club and was taken to Tri-States and to CORSA Conventions and became known to Corvair fans outside New Mexico. At some point both Clark's Corvair Parts and Corvair Underground wanted to offer the book for sale in their catalogs. Purchases by Clark's and Underground helped to encourage and finance printing new editions. I didn't know how many times Clark's asked for another batch of the books or how much money they paid for each order, but Vickie tells me one order from Clark's was for fifty books ordered in late 2009. From her records she found that in 2012 Clark's paid us $180 for 100 copies. The latest edition is the 9th printing from November 2012 and the club paid $197.95 to print 100 books. Did we ever receive any royalty payments from the sale of the book? If you look at Clark's on-line catalog today you will find the book listed for sale on page 250 as "C10962" at $6.65 per copy. I found an online 2010 Corvair Underground catalog that listed the book at an even $10.00 but I don't know how many they obtained from us. At the January 18th Board meeting I told the Board that Bill had called me to ask how many books we had in stock. He wanted to know because Clark's was updating their catalog and asked him if we had changed the price of the book. The Board guessed that Clark's planned to order more books from us and the discussion went on from there. Bill told me he was surprised to read the Board Meeting Minutes in the February newsletter. He said that the meeting minutes made it "Sound like we should be getting more money for the Care & Feeding Booklet. To this date the Booklet has not cost the Club $1. It is places like Clark's that have paid for it by wanting to sell the Booklet. Every new printing was paid for because Clark's or some one else wanted more copies. We are in the 9th printing and have been giving these Care & Feeding booklets to all the new members over the years, they have been a asset to the Club without having the Club to lay out any money." I think the book has been of value to many club members over the years and is a key element of all the items in the "packet" that is given to all new members. It would be a loss to the club not to be able to provide the book to new members in the future. Our club owes a debt of gratitude to Bill Reider for all his work compiling and revising the book over many years. We have some fifty copies of the 9th edition at this time. If we need more copies than that it would up to the Board to decide whether to reprint the book as it is or attempt another revision. We may not have anyone in the club at this time willing and able to put in the time and effort to do a revision. Have you looked at your copy of the "Care & Feeding" book lately? How much value did it have for you when you joined the club? How much value does it have to you or to the club at this time? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ============================================================================ | March 2017 | April 2017 | May 2017 | | Su Mo Tu We Th Fr Sa | Su Mo Tu We Th Fr Sa | Su Mo Tu We Th Fr Sa | | 1 2 3 4 | 1 | 1 2 3 4 5 6 | | 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 | 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 | 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 | | 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 | 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 | 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 | | 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 | 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 | 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 | | 26 27 28 29 30 31 | 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 | 28 29 30 31 | | | 30 | | ============================================================================ Nomination form for the BOYDSTON AWARD is published in the March newsletter. President Pat went to Milwaukee to buy his dream truck. Plans included going to the Range Cafe, the Museum, Old Route 66 cleanup, metal recycling, our Anniversary party and the 2011 Tri-State. Jim did a tech talk on adjusting late shifters. We worried about CORSA 100%. Vickie Hall discussed Elvis Presley's Corvair. Jim ranted about unnecessary "bling" on cars: glare and distraction! Richard Finch installed a Clark's air conditioner in an early model. Steve Goodman discussed ammeters and voltmeters. He preferred measuring volts. 2003 Vol 29 Nr 3 # 330 Our cover: Wendell Walker's 1964 convertible. Treasury: $5,780. Robert Gold and Tarmo Sutt reported on the Barret Jackson auction in Phoenix. We had a poorly-attended trip to Bosque del Apache. Robert Gold told us the nicknames given to his cars, quite a list. We included the minutes of the January Car Council meeting. They said they'd have a speaker on "clunker laws" at their next meeting. Did they anticipate the "Cash for Clunkers" program? Steve Gongora reported on a visit to Bode Aviation at Double Eagle Airport. Steve Johnson invited us. LeRoy Rogers told the latest news on the Raton Tri-State. Chuck Vertrees provided a story about how his brother built his first car: a Ford Model A coupe. Both brothers learned more than they bargained for from this experience. Finally, there was a series of anecdotes from the internet about how small sports cars (like Miatas) are invisible to the drivers of big American cars and trucks. It's still true! And now we have the added distraction of cell phone use while driving. 1996 Vol 22 Nr 3 # 246 On the cover: your editor working on the newsletter with his Apple IIgs computer; photo by Bill Reider. Chuck Vertrees provided meeting minutes. We welcomed Francis Boydston back to the meeting after a hospital stay. We welcomed new member Mickey Payne. We suggested that CORSA should have a newsletter award and some of those present thought CNM would easily win it. Treasurer Will Davis said we had $606 in the convention account plus $529 in the bank. We looked forward to several car shows and a Route 66 show at Nob Hill next year. Chuck Vertrees previewed a photo rally, really a dry run for the convention rally, to be held in March. The raffle car was almost done and it looked great. Bill Reider said we had already sold $500 worth of raffle tickets. We planned to vote for Mark Domzalski for CORSA Western Director. Ray Battaglini spoke briefly about the Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Ohio. Bill Nelson gave a talk on lubricants and Pennzoil products. Mark Domzalski said we were all trying to finish up planning for the convention and still have time to go to Montrose for the Tri-State. LeRoy previewed our garage tour to see the Phil Maloof car collection and to see Jim Pittman's newsletter production facilities. Tech tips: Mark Domzalski told about ignition coils that could stand up to an electronic ignition, and Bill Reider discussed getting the best wheel and tire combination for the Corvair. 1989 Vol 15 Nr 3 # 162 On the cover a Rampside was pulling a trailer with a CNM birthday cake. New members were Joe Ashton and Jim Gould, and "Bob" Gold returned to CNM. President Bill Hector was still trying to get annual Corvair mileage figures from our members and Clayborne Souza was still trying to get designs for a Red River Tri-State patch. For enthusiastic students of English and puzzles, Tom Martin said that 133 words could be spelled using the letters to MISTLETOE. Kem Owen continued his series of articles on his V-8 Corvair coupe, discussing his disk brake installation. In March 1989 we had a special 15th Anniversary edition newsletter featuring classic articles from the previous fifteen years. 1982 Vol 8 Nr 3 # 78 The cover was a jumble of letters that spelled out a secret message for the reader to decode. Richard Twilley had a mystery Monza which went "THUNK THUNK" from the rear wheel. He managed to find the surprising cause of the noise before it disrupted his happy marriage. Your editor presented part 1 of a story about "Why I own a Corvair" instead of a Mustang. Yes, in a different universe your editor could well have been a lifetime Mustang owner. 1975 Vol 1 Nr 3 # 3 On the cover, a photo of a decal on the back of Glen Shakel's VW van: "Power by Chevrolet!" Chevrolet Corvair, that is. Editor Mark Morgan interviewed Glen to learn more about the conversion. Glen was very pleased: he found more power, no handling problems and only a modest loss of fuel economy. Because of a temporary "economic crisis" we lost our meeting place at Ed Black's, but Hector and Steve Gongora came to the rescue and offered us space at their House of Covers shop. We planned a party for our first birthday. Coming up were trips to Bosque del Apache, to Denver for a "Western Convention" and to Seattle for the 1975 CORSA Convention. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Francis Boydston Award is presented annually to a Tri-State CORSA Chapter member in good standing who best exemplifies the influence, support, ideals, and values that Francis Boydston embodied.
