The old van got 24 MPG and we had no maintenance problems on the trip. We left with one problem. The day before as we were loading up, Anne tried to open the passenger door from the inside, heard a snap and the door would not budge. As she said, I became a gentleman that trip, since anytime we stopped, I had to get out and go around and let her out. Needless to say, there were a few times I forgot and banging on the window got my attention. We had a great visit with our new grandson, Maxwell and his family. Found a long-lost cousin of Anne's in Pennsylvania, visited the Penn Caves, attended her 50th high school reunion, visited the memorial in Oklahoma City, spent some time and money at the original Bass Pro shop in Missouri and, most importantly, got to attend the National Corvair Convention in Independence on Friday the 30th. At the Convention we got to see some special cars and trucks and an Ultravan at the hotel. We then followed about 80 cars out to the autocross course. It was a double circle with six 90-degree turns, several sweeping turns and a set of five zigzag pylons. The best time I saw before we left was 60.01 seconds. Penalties were added for hitting pylons on the course and if you hit 4 you were disqualified. Everyone had 3 turns at the course and of course times improved each time. Some were so serious about the race, they removed the passenger seat, the rear seat and everything out of the trunk. Several only put 1 gallon of gas in the car and pushed it to the starting point. I saw one driver taking his stock wheels off and replacing them with wide slicks. So I had to ask him how much it helped. He ran the first lap with normal tires and then with the slicks and improved by 15 seconds. Can't wait to see the official results that should be in next month's CORSA Communique. We then returned to the hotel to scope out the door prizes and banquet facilities. If we thought that 125 or so at our Tri-State was a lot to handle, there were 374 registered to eat that night and the hostess said that not all attendees would stay for dinner. After getting my Corvair fix, we left for Shenandoah, Iowa to spend the weekend and 4th of July holiday with Anne's sister and her husband. We slept in their huge RV parked out front of their small house just to see if we could handle it if we were to invest in one ourselves. It was very comfortable, but the cost was about the same as their house. We will give that some further thought. We got home on Thursday and spent Friday catching up on mail and bills. This was the longest we were ever away from home since our honeymoon. I will try to show pictures at our next Club meeting from the Convention and from other sites along the trip if we have time. We did not get back in time for me to go to the July meeting, but I will see all of you on the 2nd of August. ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== JULY MEMBERSHIP MEETING -- 2017.07.05 Anne Mae Gold Called to order: 7:01 PM with 12 members in attendance. OFFICER REPORTS President: John is on the road. VP: If it rains, please do not come out to the Old Route 66 cleanup. Lube thinks he poured too much gas preservative in his truck and that's what caused his carburetor issues at the Tri-State. All is well with the truck now. The Durango train show was a lot of fun. Treasurer: $6,131.62 in our account. This Tri-State is shaping up to be one of our most lucrative ever ... thank you Terry and Larry! COMMITTEE CHAIR REPORTS Editor: Newsletter deadline is Friday July 21 at 9:00 PM. Jim brought in a recent copy of AUTOMOBILE magazine with an article about a Devon-C which was a Corvair-powered sports car from the 1960s. He told us the latest news on the "Care and Feeding of Your Corvair" book. He called Clark's and they would be happy to get 50 more copies of the 2012 edition. Vickie had about 11 copies and Jim had 54, so with the Board's blessing he mailed 50 copies to Clark's. They should be sending a check to Robert for 50 books at $3.60 per copy. Ray says that he has the complete 2012 edition of the book in PDF format and can print more. Jim has been investigating whether we can update the book to make a 2017 edition. Jim said he had no statistics from the Tri-State to put in the July newsletter and when he gets them he may publish a report or may just put the statistics in the August issue of the newsletter. Tri-State: Terry thanked the members who attended and helped out with the event. He apologized for not getting recognition at the banquet for the two Steves (Goodman and Gongora) who have attended every Tri-State from the very beginning. Tarmo and Steve told us the story of how they got Taos Pueblo to agree to allow us to bring our cars into the pueblo for photos on Sunday morning. Terry announced the winners of the car show. There were 137 people registered, 47 Corvairs were driven. Terry recognized Ray Trujillo as the recipient of the 2017 Boydston Award, Steve presented him with the plaque, and Ray told us why he was not present when the announcement was made at the banquet. Car Council: Robert did not attend the last meeting. He does not have much information on the upcoming Collector Car Appreciation Day but will update the Car Council website. Please go there for the latest information. We are responsible for paper plates and napkins at the Car Council "All Clubs Picnic" in August. It will not be highly publicized because last year lots of people came out who were not part of the Car Clubs. Merchandise: There were three people who planned to attend Tri-State but were not able. Heula and Vickie decided to send registration bags, CNM lapel pin, dash plaque, and Tri-State agenda to them. Brenda was unable to attend. She called Vickie to thank the club for thinking of her. Mary Lou & Mark Martinek were unable to attend. Mark sent the club a thank-you email. Larry Blair was the third person to receive one. Thank you Vickie and Heula for being so thoughtful! Vickie brought some car related T-shirts. Please take what you like. Membership: Larry was not in attendance. Robert updated the club on the T-shirt fiasco and how the printer is going to make it right. We won't ask them to reprint the shirts. We won't ask for credit on future orders. Instead, they will refund the club $550. UPCOMING EVENTS JUL 08 - Old Route 66 Cleanup. Meet 8:00 AM. There's lots of trash and tires. JUL 14 - Collector Car Appreciation Day. JUL 23 - 10 to 3 - Die Cast Vehicle and Toy Show at the Albuquerque Marriot with $3 admission. [matchboxgathering@gmail.com] 505-980-4330 AUG 13 - NMCCC "All Clubs Picnic" at a favorite location: Oak Flat Picnic Area AUG 18-20 - Gunnison, Colorado Car Club Show. We had a visitor named Dave Hutchinson. He told us part of his Corvair story. His wife owned a Corvair and they enjoyed it. Recently he bought on EBay a 1964 Corvair from California. He brought a couple of photos of his car and passed them around. The car has been customized. There were lots of parts in the trunk. Ray received an email from a person who is working with Tibi Scheflow. They want to move all of Ollie's remaining Corvairs and Corvair parts. Her phone number is 917-822-2489. She has a 1965, 1966, and a 1969 car and lots of parts. The cars were brought out from the Midwest when Ollie moved to New Mexico. Tarmo has photos of the cars and parts on his phone if anyone wants to see them. Tarmo described the "Fourth of July on the Plaza" event in Santa Fe. He brought his 1966 red Corsa turbo convertible and it was the only Corvair there. There were 125 cars in the show. Tarmo won the 1960's class, this is his third win. The governor was there, flipping pancakes. Tarmo said there were many people who came up to see his Corvair and to ask questions and make comments. Some were quite astute questions and comments. Steve installed LED turn signals in the front of his 1966 Corsa coupe. As you recall, earlier he installed LEDs in the rear taillights and turn signals. He invited everyone to come out and see them. They were very impressive. The 50/50 winner was Pat Hall and the pot was $8.00. We adjourned in time to see a brilliant red sunset. ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== JULY BOARD MEETING MINUTES - 2017.07.19 Anne Mae Gold Called to order at 5:05 PM Present: John Wiker, Jim Pittman, Lube Lubert, Robert & Anne Mae Gold OFFICER REPORTS President: John went out to the Lewis Antique Auto and Toy Museum in Moriarty. The cost is $4 per person. The owner is a friend of LeRoy. John suggests that we plan a breakfast at Dough-Re-Mi and then go out to the museum. It would be a great activity to do in the fall, maybe October. He will require one week's notice before we come out. All anticipated bills from the Tri-State are paid. John stopped by the CORSA Convention. There were 374 people at their banquet! John went to the Road Rally and shared stories and pictures. Everybody had three runs and were judged on their best time. They hired people to run the rally. No passengers were allowed. Some people took out the passenger seat to lighten the weight of the car. There were no classes. John and Anne traveled 5,053 miles this summer on their trip! VP: Lube reported on the Old Route 66 Clean up. This weekend is the die cast model and toy show. It will be $3 to get in at the Marriot from 10 AM to 3 PM. Treasurer: current balance is $6,757.11 The T-shirt company refunded us $550 for the printing error and it has been deposited. There were only 12 people who signed up for the July 29th baseball game, so it has been cancelled for now. COMMITTEE REPORTS Membership: Larry was not present Merchandise: Vickie was not present Car Council: The NMCCC newsletters were mailed today. Editor: Newsletter deadline is Friday July 21 at 9:00 PM. Jim talked to Bill Reider and Ray Trujillo about updating and printing more copies of our booklet. We are waiting for word from Sylvia about whether the booklet can be updated. Jim sent 50 of the 2012 booklets to Clark's and they sent us a check for $180.00 or $3.60 per book. REMINDERS Ice-Cream Social August 5th -- We'll caravan down Old South 14 from Tijeras to the Olde Tyme Shop & Ice Cream Parlor. It's at 10786 NM 337, phone 505-281-3892. We have to decide what time of day to go. State Fair Car Show September 17th -- We'll meet at 6:45 at Central and San Pedro for pictures and then caravan in to the Fair. Please be aware of the construction on Central. We will meet on San Pedro just south of Central, but just beyond the traditional "Furr's Parking" area where we have always met. OTHER TOPICS OF INTEREST John shared his pictures from the Convention. Adjourned at about 6:10 PM. ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== A WORD TO THE WISE -- A Car Shipping Saga Robert Gold OK, OK, I have to admit something to you fellow CNM'ers. I just bought a Dodge. A DODGE. Not a GM product -- a product made by Chrysler. A MOPAR. Well, now that I've come clean, I can now relate to you my car shipping saga. I hope you may find this story helpful, whatever car you want to ship. Just a few weeks ago I found a 2006 Dodge Magnum on Ebay. I decided that was the car for me after talking to LeRoy Rogers, who has owned one since they came out in 2005. I have admired LeRoy's Dodge Magnum for years. He loves his, and now that I have mine (with a Hemi engine no less!) I love mine too. The rub occurred when I attempted to get it delivered from the seller who lives in Dallas. When I bought the car, Ebay led me to believe all I had to do was to arrange shipment with one of their listed shippers and like magic the car would appear in my driveway. That was NOT the case. I did call a listed shipper and the guy on the phone took down the information and confirmed the shipping price. The online listing said that the car would be shipped within five days and would arrive in three days more. With that done I went to Phoenix to watch my beloved Cardinals beat the D-Backs in two games. All was right with the world. However, the five-day waiting time came and went and I hadn't heard from the shipper. I called them from my motel room and the rep told me that he was sooooo sorry, but they had been unable to locate someone to transport the car. What? I had thought they would be the ones to ship the car. Nope. The way it works is, this firm was just a jobber that schedules independent transport trucks to pick up cars and deliver them. Once I realized that, I asked if they had ANY idea when the car would be picked up. "No," he said. Hmmmm. I then asked what sort of liability his firm had to ensure that my car would EVER be shipped. His reply was that the only thing that motivated them was the fact that I would pay them when it was delivered. That didn't seem to me to be much motivation. Even after the guy said they were trying REALLY HARD to find a shipper, I decided that I was going down a dead end street and if I wanted to see that car before the tires went flat, I needed to find another way. Needless to say I cancelled the order that very day. Which begs the question:what exactly is a better way to ship a car? As I see it, if I wanted to have the car in a timely manner I had two choices. The first was to contract directly with a carrier who controls the trucks and drivers. That way I could get a real idea of when things would happen. I didn't pick that option because I didn't want to pay the much higher rate involved. After all, less risk, more cost. The second option was to get myself to Dallas and drive my new beauty home myself. And that is just what I did. They next day I was at the Phoenix airport boarding a flight to Dallas and two days later that Dodge Hemi was in my driveway. A plus to driving it 600 miles from Dallas to my house was that I became well acquainted with the car along the way. I am very pleased with the car and it is more than I had hoped it would be. It passed emissions yesterday and next week it will be officially mine. Actually I have another funny car story that I saw recently on TV. A guy bought a really high end Porsche race car in Germany and had it shipped to the USA in a container. When he opened up the container he saw, in addition to the Porsche, a cold-war-relic East German Trabant. They had put that car in the container to fill the extra space in the container. It was being used as packing! The guy who bought the Porsche was a bit of a nut and he undertook to fully restore his free Trabant just for grins. That is why he was mentioned on the show. It has been truly said that one man's trash is another man's treasure! Like everything else, life is a learning experience. What I learned from getting my new treasure from Dallas to my driveway is: if you want a car shipped, you should be sure to understand in advance how the process works. I hope my experience will help some of you out in the future. -- Robert Gold ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== NATIONAL CLASSIC CAR APPRECIATION DAY POKER RUN John Wiker My wife and I decided to stop working on the house and join the Poker Run in honor of the classic cars today. We got to the starting point at the Enchanted Trails RV Park at 11:00 AM. We were the last to check in because of the mess on Central, even though we took Lomas as far as we could until it joined Central at Rio Grande. The first card I drew was a Seven of Clubs. Next it was off to the Unser Museum with a drive-by for old times of the old house on Hayes. At the museum, I drew an Ace of Spades. A short drive East later brought us to Car Crafters and I finally struck some luck with a Seven of Hearts. I now at least had a pair. Next we went for lunch at the Owl Cafe and a draw of a Queen of Clubs - no help at all. We set out for the Olde Tyme Ice Cream shop for desert and the last card draw. My wife choose a Wake Up milk shake and I had a Chocolate Nut sundae. I then saw Joyce Clements to get my last card. It was a Seven of Spades. Now I was feeling good. With only 24 cars completing the run and five stops of 52 cards each, the odds seemed to be in my favor. There were two awards given: worse hand -- mine did not qualify, and best hand. Could you imagine that someone came up with a Diamond Flush? Oh well, that is probably why I don't gamble at casinos when I travel to Laughlin for golf each year. As those of us who play that game, it itself is a gamble most times. The weather was great with a cool breeze in the hills, the company was great and the ice cream delicious. Remember, we as a club are going to visit the ice cream shop on Saturday August 5th. That day the hostess is having a movie and game night, starting at 6:00 PM, with the movie GREASE showing at dusk. Maybe we should consider this when deciding what time we leave so we can take advantage of this event. Don't forget, they have the state's best chile-cheeseburger and great hot dogs as well. Could be a supper affair if we want it to be. See you at the next meeting or on Saturday, August the 5th. ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== Happy Birthday Wishes to Five CNM'ers born in August: Floyde Adams Steve Johnson Mark L Morgan Sarah Price Larry Yoffee Happy Anniversary Wishes to a Special Couple this Month: Sylvia & Ray Trujillo ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== Photos from the CORSA Convention John Wiker ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== LED TURN SIGNALS AND RUNNING LIGHTS Steve Gongora I have replaced my tail lights of my 1966 Corvair Corsa with wafer LEDs and have been extremely happy with the results. The only remaining outside lights to replace were the front turn signal/running lights. SuperbrightLED.com had a Father's Day Discount. I thought this was as good at time as any to replace the front bulbs. I anticipated the front bulbs needing a resistor. The LEDs don't require much current to work. The resistor compensated for this. You have to tap into the positive side of the bulb wire. The other side (black ground) of the resistor connects to the ground of the vehicle. Once the bulb is installed (installs exactly like the factory bulb) and the resistor is installed, you have an appearance much brighter than the factory bulbs. It was well worth the effort. We proclaimed "Ice Cream Week" because of the hot weather. Highland would be closing at 7:00 PM instead of 9:00 PM so we needed to find another meeting place. New members were Steve & Enriques Sanchez. The August All Clubs Picnic would be at Nambe Falls. Heula said we should have "one-minute" tech tips for new members at meetings. Chuck Vertrees was putting together an epic tour of Albuquerque to see architectural and historic locations. Hal Rupert of Silicon Valley Corsa in California provided an article on the Fathers' Day Car Show in Edgewood where he and wife Linda met Pat & Vickie Hall. 2003 Vol 29 Nr 8 #335 Tarmo Sutt's 1965 Corsa was at the Santa Fe Fourth of July Plaza show. VP Joel ran our July meeting attended by 24 members. President Robert Gold was in Spain. Wendell reported $5,204. A guest was Ray Trujillo who bought the 1964 that used to belong to Jim Matthews. Larry Blair received a State award as a Professional Engineer. Tarmo sought a Judson supercharger and brought it to the meeting. It was big and heavy! We discussed the various methods of supercharging used with Corvair engines. There was a discussion on how best to retain members. Does the Wheels Museum still exist? What happened to the money it raised? 1996 Vol 22 Nr 8 #251 On the cover Billiken's Corvair had been to Pojoaque, Tesuque and CLAUNCH. A guest was Marshall Navaroo. New members were Michael Hurst and Bruno Power. Will Davis reported $1087.62. The Museum car show was a success and the annual picnic was to be at the Elks Refuge. The swap meet was to be at the UNM football stadium. Bill Reider reported that the 1996 convention was a financial success; we had over $20,000 in the bank with most bills paid. Debbie Pleau reported there were 415 registrations and 861 name badges issued. There were 111 trophies awarded. A few T-shirts, pins, badges and cookbooks were left over. We planned to write a "how-to-run-a-convention" booklet. Ollie reported on our Adopt-A-Highway project, a mile of Old Route 66 east of Albuquerque. A convention wind-down party at the Goffes' house, July 13th. We cancelled our summer campout due to forest fire danger. Mark Domzalski had a tech tip on checking wheel studs. Bill Reider warned about drilled carb jets. Heula Pittman reported comments on our convention from other CORSA newsletters. 1989 Vol 15 Nr 8 #167 Mark Morgan's "Mad Max" cartoon showed the vehicle you'd need to drive in L.A. in 1989, or, maybe, Albuquerque in 2017. We inherited $166.44 from the defunct Alamogordo White Sands club. Dale Housley and Clayborne Souza put on a terrific Red River Tri-State. Identify bad AC fuel pumps by "6022" on the metal tag. Bill Hector told about Illinois Harley-Davidson motorcycle caravans years ago. Bill Reider warned that if you mounted your ignition coil too low so it touched the engine sheet metal, it would wear a hole in the bottom. Tom Martin's column featured Wendell Walker. Factoid: twenty years earlier two men walked on the moon. 1982 Vol 8 Nr 8 # 83 Cover: a Spyder convertible from a Chevrolet ad. We had $363 in the bank. Sylvan presented dash plaques to all who entered the March fun rally. Jack Bryan previewed the club picnic at the Doc Long picnic area. Francis previewed the October swap meet. He had seven spaces reserved. Bob Philips told about gold paint on a Corsa that faded and developed micro chips after a year in the sun. Dan Mowery of Rader Awning gave a presentation on upholstery, carpet and convertible tops. His suggestions: first do upholstery, then do paint, then do convertible top. Bill Reider was modifying his 1965 Monza sedan to "1982" specifications. Richard Twilley provided a cross-reference for air and oil filters for Corvairs. 1975 Vol 1 Nr 8 # 8 Our first "double issue" had a bizarre cover design. If you owned multiple Corvairs, Jack Sellers would store them at $4 each per month. We considered getting front license plates with the club logo. Sylvan sought speakers for our meetings. Ike Meissner spoke on generators. We planned an election at the October meeting. New members were Charles McWhorter, Robert Langlois, David Langlois and Steve Solow. ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== Enchanted Corvairs Newsletter is published monthly by Corvairs of New Mexico, chartered Chapter #871 of CORSA, the Corvair Society of America.
