Several bags of trash were collected and Robert took them to the Tijeras recycle center where he learned that he should not have picked up pieces of lumber becaused they charged extra for them. A lesson for the future: leave large objects like tires or refrigerator doors or scrap lumber by the side of the road and report them to the highway department AAH coordinator at 505-798-6613. There was a lot of trash but the ground was dry with no mud. There was a light breeze. It was a nice day for our first pickup of the year. ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== APRIL CLUB BREAKFAST Two Corvair convertibles parked at Christee's Cafe, an early and a late. A great breakfast for all. Attending were Sherry & Dennis Ewert visiting from Wisconsin; Heula & Jim Pittman; Vickie & Pat Hall; Rita & Steve Gongora and two charming and active future Corvair Drivers who kept us supplied with bubble gum balls; Terry Price with his spectacular 1966 Monza convertible; David Huntoon with his special 1963 Monza convertible; John Wiker who had somehow managed to lose his bright yellow 1966 Monza coupe that has appeared at more car shows than any other CNM car. Food was good, weather was good, company was great, all had a terrific time. We spent a few minutes lamenting the absence of old faithful breakfast-goers but soon got over it. Next time we have a club breakfast, all members and guests are welcome to come join the fun. ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== Happy Birthday Wishes to May CNM'ers: Anne Mae Gold Pat Hall Brenda Wilvert May Anniversaries: Lee & Bill Reider Leslie & Kevin Sullivan ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== APRIL MEETING -- 2018.04.04 Anne Mae Gold Called to order at 7:05 PM Members in attendance: 15 (Including 3 new members) OFFICER REPORTS: President (Lube): Dave Allin (new member) brought in three Corvair models to share with us. He is VP of the Model Car Club! He is looking to get a real Corvair. He has a friend who is a writer for Vintage Roadcar who will be out in July and is interested in doing a piece on the Corvair. Guests Lesha Kitts and Bob Kitts are restoring a Corvair Greenbrier van together. Bob is the president of the Corvette club. Maybe our clubs can do some events together. Lube reminded us of the Old Route 66 Cleanup. He and his brother and friend had an adventure out at Waldo. Larry Blair explained why the exit is there... but nothing else is. VP (Art): Art saw some interesting Corvairs on his hockey trip up to Colorado Springs. He saw a total of three Corvairs... a Lakewood, a 1964 Coupe, and a late model convertible out in a field. He got a penalty playing sled hockey. His team won. They went up to Denver to see a top rate paralympic level game. Secretary (Anne Mae): nothing to report. Treasurer (Robert): $6,973.33 COMMITTEE REPORTS: Editor (Jim): Newsletter deadline is Friday April 20, 9:00 PM. Car Council (Robert): Robert missed the last meeting because he and Anne Mae went to Silver City for their 25th wedding anniversary. They had a great time! Silver City is a secluded and wonderful place. Robert described the Cat Walk near Glenwood. Anyway, the meeting was an envelope stuffing party for the Museum Car Show to be held on Sunday May 20. We will meet at 7:00 AM and drive in all together. More info will be sent out as the event draws near. Visit www.nmcarcouncil.com for more information on events in town. The front license plate issue was not passed, but it will continue to be introduced in the future. This would really affect people using year of manufacture plates (because there is only one plate available). It was said that the 3M company is behind this with big bucks because they make the reflective film on the plates. Membership (David): Dave maintains Corvairs of New Mexico's presence on Facebook. Merchandise/Sunshine (Vickie): Lube reported for Vickie. She was greatly missed. UPCOMING EVENTS: * April 3 -- Freddy's Car Show & Cruise In at 10201 Central NE (just west of Eubank) 4:30-8:00 PM. I usually mark the beginning of spring when the Old Route 66 Cleanup comes around. With the area deep in drought, we were pretty sure the weather would be perfect and that's how it turned out. The sun was shiny bright when we gathered at the "Y" between I-40 and the Mother Road. Participation has wained in recent years, so I had no idea what would greet me when I came over the rise and entered the parking area. No worries this time. Within a few minutes we had a good number of CNM'ers in attendance. I knew all was right in the world when Larry Blair drew up in his spectacular truck. As we organized to hit the road and the cleanup, I had a very nice conversation with Larry Blair. I was happy to describe the features of my new -- to me -- 2010 Silverado. Larry then gave me some great advice on keeping my truck in my driveway and not in the hands of some sinister stranger. Simply put, what I needed to do was back into my driveway. As Larry describes it, by backing into the driveway thieves using those lift-type tow trucks are thwarted by having the rear, in gear, part of the truck inaccessible to their device. As I write this the Silverado is backed in to my driveway. Thanks Larry. Needless to say, I was in a very good mood when I parted ways with Lube (the successful organizer), Dave Huntoon (who drove the Corvair), Hurley Wilvert (in another big truck), Larry Blair (yes, a big truck), and Jim Pittman (with camera). However, my mood actually got much better when I started listening to my MP3 player. It now contains 1,700 songs. The first song was a good one, but not good enough for me to remember it now. Nope, the big deal was what I heard right after that first song. It was Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones singing the song Route 66. It is a very listening-worthy version of the song, and what's more, it is only one song of the 1,700 songs I have on my player. With that, I had almost enough energy to almost complete my stretch of highway. Getting old is no fun. Luckily, chance was truly on my side! -- Robert Gold ========== ==== ========== =========== ========================================= TREASURY REPORT FOR 03-25-2018 to 04-19-2018 Robert Gold DATE CHECK# AMOUNT PAYEE DESCRIPTION BALANCE = $7.008.36 ========== ==== ========== =========== ========================================= 2018.03.26 2312 -$ 35.03 J.Wiker Plaque -$ 35.03 2018.04.06 2315 -$ 47.55 H.Pittman Newsletter Printing APR 2018 -$ 25.85 2018.04.06 -$ Newsletter Postage 31 x $0.70 -$ 21.70 2018.04.11 2310 -$ 45.00 Dues D.Palmer 12 m CORSA -$ 45.00 2018.04.17 $ 82.00 Dues L.Rogers 12 m CNM $ 25.00 2018.04.17 $ D.Allin 12 m CNM $ 25.00 2018.04.17 $ N.Robison 12 m CNM $ 25.00 2018.04.17 $ 50/50 $ 7.00 ========== ==== ========== =========== ========================================= 2018.04.05 MAY NEWSLETTER ========================================== $6,962.78 ================================================================================ ====== If you have any concerns or questions about this report please ===== ====== contact Robert Gold at 505-268-6878 or email: beisbol30 msn.com ===== ================================================================================ RAIL RUNNER TO SANTA FE Jim Pittman New Mexico's commuter train started regular runs in 2006 and we often said we should ride on it but we never did. We'd see it occasionally in the distance, colorfully zipping along. The reasons we never got around to riding it were simple: the stations were a long distance from our house and as our fair city became the nation's center of car theft it seemed too risky to park at a station for many hours. At CNM meetings I sometimes talked to Tarmo about the Rail Runner. He's the only person I know who had been on it. He told me it is a great ride and offered to meet me at the station in Santa Fe and we'd go to lunch. Finally I asked him about Thursday March 29th and that was fine by him. Checking Google Map for the best station to go to and how long it would take to get there, I decided on the Los Ranchos - Journal Center station. I went online to the Rail Runner's site and bought a day pass for $6. It costs more if you are not a senior. I left home early in case of traffic problems but there were none. The weather was perfect so I arrived at the two crowded parking lots on El Pueblo NE in plenty of time. The station was nearly deserted but soon a few people trickled in and stood around waiting. I guess all the cars already in the parking lot belonged to real early birds who worked in Santa Fe. Soon a city bus showed up. I suppose there's a park-and-ride somewhere so you can take the bus to catch the train. Right on time, a mechanical voice warned of an approaching "high-speed train" and sure enough the "last car" in the train appeared around a curve. The locomotive pushes the train north and pulls it south, so to go to Santa Fe you ride "backwards" so to speak, but once on the train you can hardly tell the difference. Tarmo had advised going to the upper level seats for a better view of the scenery. We went through two or three stations before someone came by to scan my pass. My impressions of the train were: Clean. Quiet. Smooth. There were great views of the scenery. I noticed that the rails were welded so there was no click-clack over rail joints. However, at switches there was noticeable click-clacking and swaying of the cars. The train did not linger at stations. Stations were announced over the PA speakers, the train smoothly pulled in, plenty of signs told you what station, and the train waited quietly. Starting up was smooth and nearly silent. Very different from riding the Cumbres & Toltec narrow-gauge railway with its 1880s steam locomotives and creaky antique cars! Scenery was much like what we have seen many times driving to Bernalillo and Algodones. The track diverges from the highways to get to Kewa Pueblo (used to be "Santo Domingo Pueblo") and then near La Bajada Hill it approaches I-25 again and you can see cars zipping along the freeway in the distance. The track goes under I-25 and now you are in unknown territory for a while. The train seems to slow a bit on uphill stretches. Before you know it there's another underpass to get to the middle of I-25 and you begin seeing outlying businesses as you approach Santa Fe. I sent a text message to Tarmo when the train left the NM 599 station and stepped off the train at Zia station to a beautiful sunny day with a nice chilly breeze. I was greeted by the sight of Tarmo's brilliant red and white convertible, gleaming in the sun. He had taken his 1966 turbo convertible out of storage for the occasion. I was instantly transported back to the long-ago days when my 1966 turbo coupe was brand-new and my pride and joy. I had not anticipated a ride to 1966 in a time machine but that is what I got. We met Kay for breakfast at Tecolote Cafe and talked over topics old and new. They filled me in on details of their cruises to the Middle East and their trip to Italy to attend Francesca's wedding last year. Francesca, you will recall, was one of their exchange students. Tarmo got to see Italian automobile museums and was impressed by the variety of exotic engines on display. Kay was soon to go on a visit to North Dakota and that prompted me to ask for more details about the Custer Little Bighorn battle site. Kay knew a lot about that and it made me want to go see it someday. Kay went to work and Tarmo and I drove around Santa Fe, concentrating on the narrow and curvy ancient streets on the east side of town. Another trip by time machine to long ago when I visited places like Santa Fe, Las Vegas, La Luz and Mesilla -- places with a rich history in New Mexico. We stopped by a Route 66 sign for photos and eventually went to the adobe house that Tarmo's dad bought back in the 1970s. There we examined a 1966 sedan under the trees and a 1971 Porsche 911 in a tent, both potential restoration projects. I spotted Corvair crankshafts up on top of the chimney. Tarmo said he used them just to weigh down the metal smokestack. We made our way back at Tarmo's house where he dazzled me with demonstrations of his Samsung smart TV powered by Dish Network and Apple TV. Kay and Tarmo definitely live in the Twenty-first Century. It is a far cry from the late 1960s when I helped my dad assemble a huge Heathkit color television. My dad got four or five stations by rotating an elaborate multi-armed antenna on a tall mast. The Heathkit TV worked great but required rather frequent tune-ups of the color controls. It all seemed like revolutionary technology then, but it's nothing compared to what is available now. I need to get my own Apple TV! Eventually it was time to go back to the Zia station and I boarded the train for the trip back south. I sat on the left side of the train again in order to see scenery on the other side of the train, but that meant I was often in the sun. I remembered the stories about travel by ship from England to India where, if you could afford it, you got staterooms on left or right side of the ship according to the "posh" rule, "Port Out, Starboard Home" so as to minimize being cooked by the tropical sun during the voyage. Air conditioning on those trips was an open porthole, or perhaps strolling on the shady side of the deck. The sun was not a problem for me and it was comfortable on the train. At the Journal station I disembarked feeling as if I had returned from a trip of hundreds of miles and many years. Now I had to drive home through Albuquerque traffic and I'm no longer young and spry. But, no problem, I was home by 3:00 PM. Maybe you are thinking I will recommend a ride on the Rail Runner to you. Well, I will. If you have not done it, it's a unique experience. No, it is not like riding the bullet trains in Japan or the fine railroads of Europe or the crowded subways of New York or London. And yes, you can see much the same scenery by driving your own car on back roads in New Mexico. But, except for getting to the station, it is inexpensive and effortless and you can relax and feel the miles roll by while you watch scenery out of the window or watch the people in the train. The Rail Runner seems to be something of a miracle in the perennially poor state of New Mexico and, yes, it costs the taxpayer a lot of money. Many taxpayers will never ride it. But, taxpayers who travel by car on I-25 may not consider or appreciate how much extra freeway traffic they'd be contending with were there no Rail Runner. I don't know how much the Rail Runner is costing us, but to my mind it is worth it. But, go take a ride to Santa Fe or Belen on New Mexico's commuter train and decide for yourself. ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== RAIL RUNNER TO SANTA FE - PART 2 Jim Pittman Our friends Denny & Sherry Ewert were visiting from Wisconsin and got to meet several CNMers at the Christee's breakfast. They wanted to ride the Rail Runner and I accompanied them. On Friday April 20th, despite predictions of cold windy weather, we boarded the train at the Journal Center heading for the end of the line in Santa Fe. Once in the city the train went through many intersections with blinking lights and lots of cars waiting for us to pass, and we saw exotic murals on nearby buildings as we ambled slowly toward the station. Upon disembarking the first thing we saw was a sign for Tomasita's Restaurant. We were drawn there as if by a magnet. I had told Tarmo by iPhone text that we were coming and he joined us for lunch. We had a great time talking about travels to exotic lands and foreign exchange students and stories of our relatives. The lunch was delicious and we tarried until it was time to catch the train back to Albuquerque. It had snowed in Santa Fe but by the time we were walking to our car at the Journal Center it was sunny and nearly summer again. This suited the Ewerts who came here partly to escape the snow storms raging in their neighborhood in Manitowok. Will we be riding the Rail Runner again in the future? Maybe so. Why not? It's a great way to play tourist in Santa Fe! ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== 34th TRI-STATE AT CRESTED BUTTE Rick Beets As you read this, we're a little more than a month away from the Tri-State Corvair Meet / Crested Butte, Colorado, June 8-10. New members were Angie Fraleigh & Wes Heiss. Brenda Stickler previewed the Red River Tri-State. Was the Boydston Award fading from memory? Larry Yoffee reported on a fine car show. For Sale items including newsletter CDs. Painting parts black to help cooling? Part of the "unsafe at any speed" mythology came from the 1962 death of Ernie Kovacs in a Lakewood. 2004 Vol 30 Nr 5 #344 Cover: A 1966 Corsa at Domzalski's. We met at Galles Chevrolet; past member Terry Price visited. Wendell reported $2,746.61. We planned a President's cookout at the Domalskis' and a CNM Breakfast at Kokopelli's. The Constitution & Bylaws committee has been working. A Galles Car Show was planned. At our 30th anniversary the Meissner Award went to Larry Blair. Carl Johnson on the founding of the club: "Pete Colburn found eleven New Mexico members through CORSA's mailing list. Meet to talk Corvairs? Many of us had driven and learned about Corvairs long before. We hadn't simply spent a few years driving 'a car' and dumped it for something else. We liked our cars. So here we are , with all those organizational concepts--social, educational, mechanical, philosophical, and economic; all organized around Ed Cole's car." 1997 Vol 23 Nr 5 #260 Mark Morgan's Corvair-based Prowler concept. A new member was Boedean Belt. Bud Knapp was back after surgery. Wendy said we had $7,033. The Museum car show and the Tri-State conflicted this year. We amendedour constitution to require 100% CORSA membership. We planned a tour of the Journal Center. The CNM report on How to Plan a Convention had been sent to CORSA. Mark was rebuilding a Rampside differential. The Corvair shop manual's illustration of differential gears are backwards! It was actually from a Chevrolet truck manual. Ollie reported on the Old Route 66 cleanup, Sylvan had a "ten-cent" tech tip, and Mark Morgan's cartoon characters had Sylvan replacing a Pitman arm bushing with a nylon bushing. 1990 Vol 16 Nr 5 #176 Cover: a 1965 Corsa coupe. Guests were Dale & Marilyn DeWald from Illinois. New members were John Folkerts and Barry Oxford. A returning member was Joe Ashton. We planned a Tri-State in Durango, a Museum car show, an All-Chevy show and a picnic at Carolino Canyon. Bill Reider obtained Clark's cross-referenced parts list. Tom Martin's column "La Ventana" profiled Bill McClellan who bought his first Model-T for $10. Bill and Marian owned a welding business in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Tech tips: prevent water getting into your brake fluid; install differential yoke seals; modify the floor pan to install later starters on a 1960 car; prevent damage to your Powerglide due to over-filling. 1983 Vol 9 Nr 5 # 92 Cover: a Corvair front suspension. President LeRoy presided. We had $343 to spend. The Board discussed insurance at CNM events and our bid for the 1987 CORSA convention. Bill Reider asked whether our Corvairs could pass the new county emissions standards. Tech: tire terms defined by Uniroyal. 1976 Vol 2 Nr 5 # 16 Glen Thompson edited. Our new meeting place was the basement at Ed Black's Chevrolet. We moved our meeting time to the first Wednesday of the month. We planned a "convoy" to Bandelier National Monument, returning via Valle Grande. We discussed flea market fund-raising. Members planned a "Tri-State" meeting with the Denver and Utah clubs in Montrose, Colorado. A tech tip by Ike Meissner told both obvious and downright crazy steps one could take to win an econorun. ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== ANSWERS TO APRIL PUZZLES ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== Anagrams Puzzle Key ====== 2018-Mar-06 == 1. air cleaner ___ L.
