Instead we met for a club breakfast at Monroe's on Osuna on Saturday July 14th. The turnout was fabulous! There were twenty-two members (or future members) and seven Corvairs. We were joined by several members of VMCCA. Items of club business were conducted in between conversations, greeting new arrivals, conversations, taking food orders, conversations, delivery of food, more conversations. Members reported the food was excellent and the meeting was a great success. The meeting part of the breakfast was called to order at 9:30 AM. Officer Reports President: Lube is feeling better. Vice President: Art is vacationing in Iceland. Secretary: Anne Mae reports that daughter Sara is winding up a fabulous visit to Peru. Treasurer: Our treasury stands at $7,108.86. Committee Reports Editor: Jim said the newsletter deadline is Friday, July 20, 9:00 PM. Membership: David said, no new members at the moment. Merchandise / Sunshine: Vickie has sold one Care and Feeding book. There are about five of the Ninth Edition left. Heula is continuing to send out cards and letters for illnesses and birthdays. It will be CNM's turn to host the Tri-State in 2020. Please think about chairing this activity. The club will be asking for help in organizing and running the Tri-State. Car Council: Robert has finished editing a new edition of the Care and Feeding book and it is ready for review. Old or New Club Business: John Wiker introduced two members who have moved to Edgewood from Minnesota and who joined us for breakfast. Welcome to Tony Berbig and Linda Soukup. Bill Reider has been moved from hospital to Genesis Rehabilitation Center, 5123 Juan Tabo NE. Perhaps he would enjoy some brief visits by members. A burning question for this meeting was whether our club will continue with its obligation for our Old Route 66 cleanup. Mixed in with ongoing conversations your secretary was sure the answer came back in the affirmative. As proof, Dave Huntoon was drafted (that is, nominated and unanimously voted in) to serve as the organizer for future cleanup sessions. It would really be nice if more than three or four members would turn out to help. Watch our calendar for the next cleanup date. August fourth has been suggested. David Allin came prepared with a tech tip. He shared his method of cleaning up oil spills and stains on concrete driveways. Some Corvairs don't leak on driveways, but just in case you have a rare Corvair or Brand-X that does, here is his recipe: +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Removing Oil Stains on Concrete Driveway Submitted by David Allin * Cover stain with cheap kitty litter. * Soak litter with lacquer thinner * Cover with unopened plastic trash bag * Wait two hours * Sweep up litter and put in trash bag * Stain is gone! +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ July 14th is Collector Car Appreciation Day. Highland Senior Center was to be closed on Wednesday July 18th. Therefore Anne Mae and Robert invited Board members to attend the next board meeting at the Gold home on Wednesday, July, 18 at 5:00 PM. OFFICER REPORTS President (Lube): David Huntoon has agreed to take over the Old Route 66 Cleanup. More information on the next cleanup will be forthcoming. Vice President (Art): Traveling through Iceland. He reports everything there is expensive! Secretary (Anne Mae): Nothing club-related to report; Sara is back from Peru. Treasurer (Robert): Current balance is $7,059.91 COMMITTEE REPORTS Editor (Jim): Friday, July 20th 9:00 PM is the deadline for submitting articles and pictures for the newsletter. A recent email from eastern director Bryan Blackwell asked for volunteers to help pick the best CORSA web sites. We discussed different types of websites: simple, or filled with bells & whistles. Car Council (Robert): The August picnic has been moved from Oak Flats (because of forest fire danger) to Coronado Camping Area in Bernalillo. Car clubs will be notified. This could be a great location for those interested in Pueblo Indian history: it is near Coronado Historic Site and the ruins of Kuaua Pueblo. There is a restored kiva and a great museum. Robert volunteered to be the back-up person for the Car Council Facebook page. Spaces for the Swap Meet are going fast. Their next meeting will be on July 25th. Membership (David): Not in attendance. Merchandise/Sunshine (Vickie & Heula): Nothing to report. OLD / NEW BUSINESS * The Golds are more than happy to host the Board meeting any time. We anticipate that Highland Senior Center will start requiring that all who attend a meeting or activity at the Center will have to be members of the Center. * Robert really wants to continue the Club's commitment to the Old Route 66 cleanup. We need at least four people to do a good job and more would be better. Robert and David will make half of the volunteers needed and Lube will help as he is able. Lube has a lot of supplies. He will contact David about getting those to him. Lube will also contact the DOT to let them know that this event's leadership is changing. The events need to be publicized at the meeting before a cleanup, a form with the person's name and phone number needs to be prepared as a sign up, and then they need to be contacted and reminded to participate. * The breakfast at Monroe's was very well attended. There were seven Corvairs present! * Lube is planning on attending the Gunnison Car Show, August 17-19 and perhaps he will drive up to Crested Butte for lunch. * Elections are coming up in October. This should be announced at the August membership meeting, nominations should be made by September and the vote will be in October. * Bingo Party in November -- we think planning is underway for this popular event. * Christmas Party in December. We should start planning soon! Who will organize it? Where will it be held? When? Jim reported that he visited Bill Reider at the Genesis Rehabilitation Facility on Juan Tabo NE. Robert announced that he has finished updating and formatting the tenth edition of Bill Reider's Care and Feeding book. He provided a draft copy to Jim for proofreading. ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== Hot Fun In The Summer Time June Car Council Report Robert Gold I first want to mention that I braved 100 degree temps to attend this month's meeting. I wouldn't make such a big deal about this except that Bob Agnew, who rents the room to us for our meetings, has elected not to cool the meeting room. To tell the truth, I didn't feel much difference in the temperature from outside. Anyway, the surroundings didn't affect the meeting or our efforts. In fact it was a fun time! Our CNM VP, Art Gold went to the meeting too. He's seen these guys a number of times, so he had a good time in conversation. Even Jim Clements got a bit goofy telling one of his many stories. We wound up stuffing close to 400 envelopes. Art and my job was to put the return addresses on the envelopes. I can report we were both up to the task. By 7:30 the work was done and the pizzas arrived. I want to recommend you come to one of those meeting events and sample the food and have fun with the other car guys. As we ate, Jamie Saavedra conducted the scheduled business meeting. Joe Ballengee reported that things were still doing fine with our treasury. The only problem were the CD's that seem to be not interested in paying anything to us. Joyce reported that the Museum Car Show actually made a bit of money this year. The main thing of interest was that a bunch of import cars showed up adding to the uniqueness of this year's show. Keep in mind that Car Collector Appreciation Day will take place on July 14th at the Enchanted Trails RV Park at 14305 Central Ave. NW. Show up the afternoon of the 14th and you'll be sure to have a fun time. Oh yes, I forgot to say that once things get dark, they will be showing the movie American Grafitti. We talked a bit about the picnic, now as last year scheduled for Oak Flats, and if they continue to close the National forest for fire danger we might have to move the picnic site . Lastly, Joyce said that not much was happening on the September swap meet. Things should start happening once our stuffed envelopes reach their destinations. By this time the food and the heat had affected us all and we adjourned the meeting and went home. More to come next month. -- Robert Gold ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== TREASURY REPORT FOR 06-22-2018 to 07-20-2018 ROBERT GOLD DATE CHECK# AMOUNT PAYEE DESCRIPTION BALANCE = $7,108.86 ========== ==== ========== =========== ========================================= 2018.06.20 2319 -$ 48.95 H.Pittman Newsletter Printing JUN 2018 -$ 25.85 2018.06.20 -$ H.Pittman Newsletter Postage 33 x $0.70 -$ 23.10 2018.07.20 2321 -$ 45.57 H.Pittman Newsletter Printing JUL 2018 -$ 22.47 2018.07.20 2321 -$ H.Pittman Newsletter Postage 33 x $0.70 -$ 23.10 ========== ==== ========== =========== ========================================= 2018.08.01 AUG NEWSLETTER ========================================== $7,014.34 ================================================================================ ====== If you have any concerns or questions about this report please ===== ====== contact Robert Gold at 505-268-6878 or email: beisbol30 msn.com ===== ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== CAR SHOWS John Wiker Well, my JROTC gig is finally over. The camps are finished, my keys are turned in and now it's time to get back to retirement and of course car shows. The week of the Fourth of July, I participated in two shows. On the 4th, I spent the day at the Edgewood Elementary School with 59 other cars. Registration became quite confusing when I tried to make them understand that a Corvair was of the family group of Chevy, not a family of its own. I had the only air cooled car there, besides a lawnmower engined miniature T-bucket, that was hand made. They had about 30 drawings for door prizes. My luck continued as none of my five tickets was ever called. The food was good but a little expensive from the Chili Hills restaurant. I grabbed some free watermelon and hid under the trees to stay out of the sun. Award time came and they gave out 30 but none came my way. I asked the host if there was a reason and he said there was no category for me. I once again told him that a Corvair, like a Camero, was in the Chevrolet family and should have been judged with that group. Maybe next time they will know better. On Saturday July 7th, I traveled to Moriarty to the First Annual Moriarty Route 66 Car Show. About 50 cars and trucks showed up at the park. After sitting in the shade for a few hours, they announced it was time for the first of a few cruises through the town and back. I expected a quick trip, so I left my chair under the tree in the shade. An hour later we returned. The cruise was a stop-and-go to a lot a eateries along Old Route 66. We hit a park with a home brewery selection of homemade beers, then a BBQ place, then a chicken restaurant and finally a Taco place. We returned to the park at 2:00 PM and at 2:30, the storm hit. They announced that the fireworks show would go on tonight at 9:00 PM, if the weather cleared, if not it would happen Sunday at 9:00. Show prizes would be given out at 9:00 AM Sunday morning. How is this going to happen when no judging took place that I know of. Driving home the seven miles to Edgewood, I drove through muddy rain, hail and finally a mud-removing downpour. What an interesting week! ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== A MVD HAPPY ENDING -- SORT OF Robert Gold As many of you CNM'ers know, I have a rather large collection of running Corvairs. One problem with such a collection is that I want to drive all of them. This could be a problem when it comes to paying MVD for tags. However, because of a special license plate, called a Horseless Carriage (HC) tag, my money problems were solved. Since all Corvairs are older than 35 years, they all qualify for a HC license plate. It turns out that it costs almost nothing when you use this form of registration. How cheap? For the first five years you pay $17.50 and the renewal for five more years is only $9.50! Not bad. With this in mind, let me tell you about my latest attempt to get a Horseless Carriage tag. 'Way back at the beginning of April, I shipped off my application for a HC plate to the MVD in Santa Fe. You see, we can only get those tags from the MVD Vehicles Services Bureau. Alas, weeks passed and the only thing that happened was they cashed my check in mid-May. I still had no tag. Fast forward to today. After three letters to MVD, no response. What to do? Since I was running out of stamps (and patience) I decided to go to Santa Fe to see what was up. I was not optimistic. Here's what happened: Wonder of wonders I talked to a MVD employee who was very nice. Within a very few minutes I had my tag. But of course there was a catch -- my tag had a May sticker. I had lost two months. Why, I don't know. So like I said. It was a happy ending. Sort of. -- Robert Gold ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== SMOOTH SAILING Car Council Board Meeting Robert Gold So one of the things I like about our club is how well our membership gets along with each other. As an example, several years ago we needed to move our meeting place from Casa Chevrolet because the dealership didn't want us there. Our Board suggested moving to Galles Chevrolet. It hardly caused a ripple from the CNM'ers. No problem. Now let's turn to the Car Council Board meeting I just attended. The first item on the agenda was the election of officers. Just one problem -- elections were supposed to have taken place in June, and now it was July. Nobody had noticed that we didn't hold those elections. Nice. We had such a smooth operation nobody had cared. I guess that means they liked me as the Council VP. Anyway, the result is that we'll be having the elections some time soon. Since my 2-year term has expired I'll be up for reelection. I figure that I'll be in the VP position for another two years. I'll let you know. One thing for sure, our newly elected officers will include a new treasurer since Joe Ballengee wants to leave the position. I don't blame him since he only agreed to take on the job for a short time. Two years later he is still in the position. Joe will continue as an at-large Board member. Among the other agenda items is that the site for the All Clubs Picnic, to be held on Sunday August 12, will be moved to the Coronado Camping Area in Bernalillo. We abandoned Oak Flats Picnic Area because it is closed due to the dry conditions and fire danger in the area. Concerning the September swap meet, we've already gotten $1,900 in payments for spaces. Word to the wise, it would be prudent to reserve a space soon since they're going fast. CNM'ers are scheduled to help out -- Lube and Pat Hall on Thursday and the Golds and John Wiker on Saturday. I'll report more on this event in the coming weeks. Another item is the Collector Car Appreciation Day on July 14. By the time you read this it will already have taken place. These are the high points from the meeting. I don't want to end my report without complementing our president, Jamie Saavedera for all her hard work. She is amazing. -- Robert Gold ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== A GREAT COMBO Heula Pittman Twenty-two hungry CNM'ers PLUS Seven Corvairs PLUS Monroe's great New Mexican cuisine EQUALS a great combo! Yep, we CNM'ers love our red and green chile, don't we? And the folks at Monroe's know how to prepare red and green chile in the most tasty fashion that pleases our palates! We saw several old friends we have not seen in a long time at the breakfast. It was great to see longtime member, Mark Domzalski. Also in attendance were Tony Berbig and Linda Soukup who have been members since 2014, living in Minnesota. They now reside on the other side of Sandia Mountain in Edgewood. We welcome them to New Mexico. When the breakfast was announced in last month's newsletter, it was supposed to be a combination club breakfast and a replacement for our regular meeting that would have been held on the Fourth of July -- only, the Center was closed that day. Well, the breakfast part went very well, but possibly members seated at the second table in the restaurant couldn't hear and didn't know that a meeting was being conducted at the first table! The group unanimously voted in David Huntoon as the organizer of our Old Route 66 mile cleanup. John Wiker informed David -- seated at the second table -- of this action and David graciously accepted. Thanks, David. Hopefully those of us who can will help us keep the Old Route 66 cleanup tradition going for a long time. Remember Ollie Scheflow. For me, it was a successful get-together and visitation of friends accompanied by terrific food. As far as the "meeting" is concerned, well, maybe with different circumstances, more could have been accomplished. We will just have to take that up at the August meeting. Jim circulated in the room and in the parking lot to get photos of people and cars for a photo report. Perhaps some of the photos will appear in this newsletter. ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== Happy Birthday Wishes to August CNM'ers Floyde Adams Geoff Johnson Steve Johnson Mark Morgan Sarah Price Lee Reider Larry Yoffee Happy August Anniversaries: Anne & Geoff Johnson Sylvia & Ray Trujillo ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== A Tri-State Adventure by Mark Welte Darlene and I were very much looking forward to this year's Tri-State Corvair Meet in Crested Butte, CO because we'd had so much fun at the previous two events. Historically several MCCA members from Wichita would attend so we always had support along the way. This year no other Wichita area members were able to attend, so we were solo. We depart Wednesday morning, 6 June, on our way to our planned stopover in Canon City, CO. The drive is uneventful and generally enjoyable. Once we hit the Eastern Plains of Colorado temperatures start to rise. By the time we drive through Lamar, CO it is 100 degrees, and still another three hours to Canon City. Fortunately the humidity is low and as long as we are moving it is comfortable. We arrive at the Hampton Inn in Canon City early evening, and once checked-in we have dinner at the nearby Chili's. The plan for Thursday morning is to drive an hour west then stop for breakfast and visit with my cousin and his family near Cotopaxi, CO, then proceed on to Crested Butte arriving around lunchtime. Unfortunately, that's not how things turn out. Once in Cotopaxi we turn right onto a minor two-lane road for the five mile drive up into the mountains to my cousin's place. Two miles out the car begins running poorly. There is no place to pull off so I elect to limp the two miles to my cousin's. Once we get to his dirt driveway, after several attempts we determine the car just doesn't have enough power to pull itself up over the rise to where his house is on the ridge. As my grandfather used to say, "It didn't have enough power to pull the hat off your head." So we leave the Black & Silver car at the end of driveway and walk the tenth of a mile up to the house. Not exactly how we intended to arrive. At this point I'm not sure how serious the problem might be, so lots of scenarios are going through my mind -- most of them potentially catastrophic. Thursday morning is not looking very good for the home team. We know the Oklahoma City caravan is probably an hour or so behind us, taking a route that will merge near where we are, so time is of the essence. We just have to contact them and see if they can provide assistance. Easier said than done! Where my cousin lives is barely "on the grid." After several attempts we determine there just isn't enough cell coverage to place a call. Rats! But we are eventually able to get a text message through to Coleen Law with the OKC group, and they are on their way to the rescue! We have an hour or so before they arrive, so we finally have time to sit down for breakfast and visit with my cousin and his family. Afterwards I have time to do a little investigating. I restart the car and determine the problem is on the left side, probably cylinder #6, with popping back into the intake manifold and crossover tube on the turbo motor. Once the OKC crew arrives we use a tow strap to move the car up to level ground by the workshop to do some troubleshooting. I pull the left side valve cover and find a broken rocker arm on #6 exhaust. The ball has pulled completely through the rocker arm. Luckily the pushrod is undamaged. Whew! Relief. At least it isn't something major. But of all the spares I brought along on the trip, I didn't bring a spare rocker arm and ball. When I rebuilt the engine I replaced them all with new from Clark's, and the engine only had 5,000 miles on it so I didn't think it would be necessary. Boy was I wrong. So far I'm not impressed with Chinese-made reproduction parts.... No one in the OKC group has a spare rocker and ball either, so James Ergenbright volunteers to unload his gold 1965 Corsa off of his trailer so he can haul my car to Crested Butte where Steve Goodman will bring spare parts on Friday so I can get my car back on the road again. (Reminds me of a Willie Nelson song...) AND to top it off, James then hands me the keys to his gold Corsa and asks me to drive it the rest of the way to Crested Butte. So I get to drive a Corvair all the way to Tri-State after all! Darlene asks if I want her to ride along with me. I suggest she ride with Pat Silver and his wife Delia so they can chat in air conditioned comfort. She thinks it is a grand idea. Finally, the problem is known, there is a plan for resolution, and everything is going well. Or so I thought. So we said our goodbyes to my cousin and his family, and our caravan of six vehicles and trailers head off toward Created Butte. Things are going well. Until we start up Monarch Pass. As we head up the pass everything is going swimmingly. Since I am driving someone else's car I am extra diligent monitoring the car's vitals for any sign of trouble. Then the TEMP/PRESS light comes on. So the grand caravan comes to a stop at a long pull-off. Then begin the checks: Head Temp gauge -- 400 degrees, reasonable for climbing a mountain. Oil level -- good. Fan belt - good. So why the TEMP/PRESS light? Conclusion: It is a "weak snap switch" causing a premature TEMP light. But I'm driving James' car so we decide to continue to honor the light. So three more times we stop to let the engine cool off to 350 or less and continue the journey. Finally we crest the summit! Things will be smooth now. Ummm, no. So as we start down the back side of Monarch Pass I put the car in neutral and coast for a bit so as not to cool the engine off too quickly and take a chance on dropping valve seat. Eventually I put the car back in gear and continue my journey down the mountain. After one particular curve where the grade levels out somewhat I give the car some throttle to continue, and... nothing. I check the head temp gauge and it is down around 200 degrees -- the engine isn't even running! And apparently hasn't been for a while. Well, I've still got about 10 miles to the bottom of the mountain, so I coast the rest of the way. Conveniently at the bottom is a gas station with a large lot -- so I coast to a stop there and the grand caravan follows suit. After some troubleshooting we determine the mechanical fuel pump is bad. Luckily James has a good spare and the team sets about replacing it. I take a break and head to the men's room in the gas station. And promptly break the paper towel dispenser. I just give up! When I return the pump is replaced and we are ready to fire up the car (hopefully not literally). It cranks and cranks but won't start. Now what? We know the replacement pump is good. We decide the pump is not primed and apparently the gas has drained all the way back into the tank. So Bill Ashlock grabs a can of starter fluid from the gas station and after about a dozen false starts the gold Corsa finally fires up. And we are on our way to Crested Butte. Again. Thankfullly the remainder of the trip is uneventful and we finally arrive in Crested Butte at 7:00 PM. Yay! We check-in at the Grand Lodge and all have a relaxing evening sharing pizza and beverages as we take over the hotel lobby. Friday morning is relaxing as we await the parts to arrive. We all take the shuttle bus down into town and eat a hearty breakfast at McGills. Steve Goodman arrives with the spare parts in his Amate GT around noon, and by 2:00 PM the Black & Silver car is back on the road again. James and I take our cars down to the local car wash to clean them up for the car show Saturday morning. Jens Mohr and daughter Tami arrive in their Spyder later in the evening. Saturday morning there is one casualty as we all prep for the drive down into town for the car show. The all-original white 1960 Monza 900 belonging to the Langlois' of Albuquerque, NM unexpectedly rolls out of the trailer and runs into a pickup parked behind, buckling the hood. Sad indeed. The weather is gorgeous and the car show lineup along the main drag of town is impressive and attracts lots of visitors. We have fun "talking Corvair" with all the locals. There are about 45 Corvairs in the show, including the cutaway Corvair (AKA Seymour Corvair -- get it?) on display. The show ends midday and we have the afternoon free until the banquet in the evening. The Tri-State Banquet is held at the Butte 66 Restaurant, a short stroll from the Grand Lodge. Ed Halpin of Rocky Mountain CORSA is MC and doing a great job. The program is well organized and lively, keeping everyone's interest. I have a lot of fun recounting my case for the Hard Luck Award and entertaining the audience. Ultimately I did earn the coveted Hard Luck Award. Not only that, but Darlene and I received the Second Place award in Late Closed for the Black and Silver car. It truly was a Tri-State Adventure. For July our new meeting place was North Domingo Baca Multigenerational Center and 27 members attended. A special July edition of the newsletter, reporting on the Red River Tri-State, was mailed to all who registered. A question was posed: how much gasoline would you save if you drove a white air-conditioned car under the noon New Mexico sun as compared to driving a black car? Unfortunately the answer was mere conjecture. There was a short report on the ZAZ 966, a rear-engine car made in Ukraine. Was it inspired by the Corvair? A book on Corvair alignment and stopping lubricant leaks reported 201 places a Corvair could leak. Finally, the original PINK PANTHER movie offered glimpses of an early Corvair. When you watch 1960s movies, do you keep an eye out for Corvairs? We do. 2004 Vol 30 Nr 8 #347 The cover showed a graph of our treasury dollars since 1996, and a photo of several members at the Owl Cafe breakfast. Thirty-four members attended our July meeting at Galles Chevrolet. Wendell said we had $2500 in the bank. Ruth, our caretaker of merchandise, had 57 license plates, 19 jacket patches, 159 CNM pins and 40 Care & Feeding books available. Del and David reported on going to the Convention in Del's "purple" Corvair. We planned a picnic trip to Ruth's place in the Jemez. We discussed mailing exchange newsletters to other clubs. Were the ones we got in return worth our expenses to mail to them? We learned that Mary Lou & Mark Martinek were moving to Washington state. Steve Goodman wrote about a fire that almost started in the engine lid insulation of a show car -- the sun reflected from the shiny chrome 140-HP engine air cleaner cover and acted like a magnifying glass, heating up the somewhat oily insulation to the point of smoke! Oliver Scheflow reported on our latest Old Route 66 clean-up by nine members and guests. Finally, an article from the internet forecast what might happen in the not-too-distant future when corporations and the government routinely gleaned all our personal information and a analyzed it with sinister results. That article was written fourteen years ago. Are we there yet? 1997 Vol 23 Nr 8 #263 The cover a Corvair crossword puzzle. President Domzalski ran our meeting and Treasurer Walker said we had $7,345.40 in our various accounts. Guests were Mike Cossey who has a 1964 Monza which he would like to sell, and Bernadette Gongora who brought her dad, Steve. Sylvan said we had a new member in Farmington who had a 1965 500 which he wanted to change from a 3 speed to a 4 speed. Those who attended the International Convention in Lake Placid gave accounts of their trip. (There were hints that the Lake Placid convention made us appreciate our Vairs in the Air convention even more.) We planned to convoy to the Santa Fe Car Show on July 4th, leaving from the Goodwill store on San Mateo at 6:30 AM. Our VLA tour was planned for Sunday July 27th and we intended to stop in Socorro for an early lunch. There were eight Corvairs at the All-Chevy show. A possible summer campout was on hold. Tech tips included an article by Mark on cleaning up your dash instruments to make them look like new as well as make them much easier to read. Dennis forwarded a quote from CNN by former Apollo VII astronaut Walter Cunningham, who was testifying this week before Congress in an attempt to spur more space exploration. "Today, the once rambunctious American spirit of innovation and adventure is being paralyzed by the desire for a risk-free society. This country was established by risk-takers.... It's the Christopher Columbuses and the Neil Armstrongs who move us forward, not the Ralph Naders. With a Ralph Nader at the head of a wagon train, we would never have made it across the plains and over the Rockies." Reference CNN site http://cnn.com/TECH/9705/09/space.hearing/index.html 1990 Vol 16 Nr 8 #179 The cover all the parts of a 140-HP air cleaner. Steve Gongora penned our meeting notes. New members were Mary Lou Martinek and Steve Randock. We discussed the future of Tri-State meets and our club voted to continue them as they have been: Rocky Mountain, Pikes Peak and New Mexico to continue rotating the sponsorship every three years, and not expand to include other clubs. We planned an economy run to Grants and a tour of the mining museum there. After a call for candidates to run for office in October and a preview of the Route 66 Econo-Run to Grants, we had a nice article on the function of motor oil additives. 1983 Vol 9 Nr 8 # 95 The cover a cartoon with these balloon quotes: "Yesterday some guy came by and asked how much you'd pay to have this junker hauled outta here. I told him to forget it because you were planning to restore it someday." "Thanks... some people just don't understand about classic cars!" The car in question was Shoe's 1963 Corvair. This month we had $515 to spend and a talk by George Morin on problems installing a 1964 rear end in a Lakewood. Your editor had an essay on the "rope-drive" Pontiac Tempest. Who remembers what that was? And we published a member list with 56 names.
