I was blown away by the convention coverage. Great articles and photos of people and cars! The new Communique staff did an excellent job. And, by extension, what a wonderful job was done by all of those who organized and participated in the 2018 convention! My first thought was, what rare and outstanding organizations Corvair people have available to them at this time in history, fifty-nine years after the introduction of the Corvair for sale to the public, and some fifty years since we could have gone down to our Chevrolet dealer and ordered a new Corvair. As the years go by, Corvairs are lost here and there by accidents, extreme modifiers, lack of parts, rust, wear and just plain neglect, and there will never be any more new Corvairs, ever. Yet there are scores of Corvair clubs, people still proudly drive and show their Corvairs, there are dozens of quality web pages and newsletters devoted to Corvairs and their owners. And we all have an international "mother ship" known as CORSA that publishes a quality magazine and supports all Corvair owners in many ways, not least with annual conventions and support for local club events. The world may be an ever more dangerous place, Washington D.C. may be a swamp of egotistical power-seekers, our local governments may be as corrupt and venal as ever, technology may be changing faster than any of us can keep up. Yet here in 2018 we still have enthusiastic Corvair owners, an array of local Corvair clubs and a superb international group to help them. Is this a series of small and large modern-day miracles or what? We are all getting older, Corvairs are getting fewer, our environment is changing in ways we do not understand, can't control and can barely cope with. But we Corvair people have a rare cohort of like-minded people who can share our enjoyment of our truly unique and yet still accessible automobiles. There will never be another decade like the 1960s in America, there will never be another ecosystem of cars, roads and driving experiences such as existed in late twentieth century America, and there will never be new cars anything like Corvairs, but somehow this remarkable time and place is still going on, and we are still living in it. So, here's my thanks to Corvair owners, club supporters, event organizers, club officers, newsletters editors, and most of all to the great people who make up the Corvair Society of America. ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== OCTOBER MEETING MINUTES -- 2018.10.03 Art Gold Our first meeting at Galles Chevrolet went very well. Art Gold reporting ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== FROM THE DRIVER'S SEAT President Art Gold I feel that since this is my first column as President of Corvairs of New Mexico, it would be fitting to provide the club members a brief description of my history in terms of Corvairs. Unlike most current members in the club, I did not have a Corvair growing up. In fact, in my influential early years in New Mexico I was given a 1972 Pontiac Ventura II for my high school graduation. I am happy to say that I still own that car, though it has gone through some changes, as have I. I have to give full credit to my father Robert Gold for getting me into the driver's seat of my first Corvair by providing me with a 1965 four door which left my stable (which includes a 1966 Monza Coupe and a 1964 Monza Coupe) and opened the doors of many Corvairs and the membership in this wonderful club twelve years ago. After all these years and various other officer positions, I felt it was time to give something back to the club for all of the good times I have had. I am still in amazement at the variety of events that we offer to the members and it is this variety I hope to continue and enhance. I also want to take this time to thank the outgoing president, Lube Lubert, for his dedicated service to the club over the last year. I hope that I can do the job half as well as he did. Thank you so much Lube. Of course, I don't want to forget the past year's Board of Directors or those individuals who oversaw the Club's many events. These are the people who make Corvairs of New Mexico the great club it is. So, as I look forward to the next year, I want to encourage you all to help the newly elected officers and me in providing the activities and technical support that will benefit all our members. -Art Gold ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== THE TONY FIORE MEMORIAL CORSA CHAPTER NEWSLETTER AWARDS Heula Pittman and Vickie Hall As soon as we learned about this contest, Vickie and I agreed that we needed to get to work submitting our nomination. The rules were (and are) rather vague but we were to choose three or more issues of our newsletters from the previous year and mail them to the CORSA committee. We did just that and have continued to do so ever since. Last year for the first time we could submit PDF versions by email -- a big savings in printing and postage expense! In 2005 and 2011 Corvairs of New Mexico's Enchanted Corvairs Newsletter won First Place in the contest for BEST newsletter in the CORSA CHAPTER Tony Fiore Newsletter Memorial Awards. In 2010 Enchanted Corvairs took Third Place. And this year we were listed in the top ten. KUDOS to our Dedicated Editor and one of the two remaining founding members of Corvairs of New Mexico, Jim Pittman, who has produced our newsletters for 40 years, 489 issues from February 1978 to the present, November 2018. We do not always give him the credit he deserves for producing such a terrific newsletter month after month. And no one knows the hours he puts in all month long. We appreciate you, Jim, and hope to see your beautiful work continue for many years to come, whether or not we win any more awards! If anyone chooses to read the background history of our newsletters, this information can be viewed at Jim's web site under "Newsletter History." ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== ========== ==== ========== =========== ========================================= TREASURY REPORT FOR 09-22-2018 to 10-27-2018 DATE CHECK# AMOUNT PAYEE DESCRIPTION BALANCE = $6,856.81 ========== ==== ========== =========== ========================================= 2018.09.21 2327 -$ 7.28 J.Wiker Name Tags -$ 7.28 2018.10.09 +$ 25.00 Dues J.McMahan 12 m CNM $ 25.00 2018.10.23 2328 -$ 89.34 H.Pittman Newsletter Printing OCT 2018 -$ 26.62 2018.10.23 -$ H.Pittman Newsletter Postage 32 x $0.71 -$ 22.72 2018.10.23 -$ H.Pittman Birthday Stamps 80 x $0.50 -$ 40.00 ========== ==== ========== =========== ========================================= 2018.11.01 NOV NEWSLETTER ========================================== $6,785.19 ================================================================================ ====== If you have any concerns or questions about this report please ===== ====== contact Robert Gold at 505-268-6878 or email: beisbol30 msn.com ===== ================================================================================ SECOND ANNUAL GREATER EAST MOUNTAIN ECONOMY RUN David Huntoon Saturday October 13th was a fine cool morning for our second annual economy run. The shop manual offered no guidance, so I turned to the trusted Corvair Tech Guide. Lo and behold, there was an article telling me in precise detail how to disassemble, clean, and reassemble the switch. It worked perfectly. The author of the article? None other than Dennis Pleau! Thanks, Dennis for leaving your knowledge and experience with us. TRANNY OIL The Tech Guide advises against using API GL-5 oil in the transmission /differential, as it attacks the brass synchro gears. The Guide recommends API GL-4, which is very hard to find, unless you go to synthetic oil. Not to worry: NAPA carries regular API GL-4 in gallons. The brand of oil is Sta-Lube. ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP Auto Zone has the small [1-1/2 inch diameter] electric fuel pump for about 45 bucks. It is Spectra Premium E8012S. ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== ANTICREPUSCULAR RAYS AND THE COVER PHOTO Jim Pittman In this issue's cover photo the light bands in the sky are anticrepuscular rays, an atmospheric optical phenomenon that appears opposite of the Sun in the sky. The anticrepuscular rays appear to converge toward the antisolar point. The convergence is actually an optical illusion. I don't think I have ever seen this phenomenon so clearly and I am happy to have been able to get the photo. Crespuscular rays are much more common: it's what you see when rays of sunlight coming through openings in the clouds appear to radiate from the sun. Or, they happen when the rising sun is still below the horizon and there are hills or mountains to make the light from the sun look like upward-shooting rays. In both cases the rays radiate from the point in the sky where the sun is located. How can anticrepuscular rays look like crepuscular rays, you ask? Since the sun is so far away, rays from the sun are virtually parallel. My analogy is to imagine a straight railroad track going east and west. If you were out on the plains and came up to this straight, level railroad, standing on the track and looking west, you'd see the tracks converge to infinity at the western horizon. If you looked east you'd see the same convergence to infinity at the eastern horizon. Anticrespular rays typically occur when the sunlight is just skimming the atmosphere where you are, and those parallel rays look like they converge both coming and going. You can learn about this in more detail online --- particularly from Wikipedia, one of the miracles of the internet which has a wealth of knowledge on just about any topic you can think of. ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== CNM CHRISTMAS CHARITY Vickie Hall The Storehouse is CNM's charity for 2018. It is located on the corner of Central and Broadway. The Storehouse has a great program that helps just about anyone in need. They give away food, household items, clothes, in good condition, and more. The only thing they do not accept is furniture. So, please bring your donations to the Christmas party and I will deliver everything to the Storehouse before Christmas. Thanking you in advance. Vickie Hall, Merchandise ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== OLD ROUTE 66 CLEANUP David Huntoon We met for our last cleanup of the year Saturday October 6th. Perhaps our first really cooler morning of the year. The wind coming down the canyon from the east was the problem. At least 20 mph and gusting even higher. Trying to control a large trash bag in those conditions is problematic. Four members of the club showed up and after fighting the wind for awhile we decided to cancel the pickup. Not to worry, the next week with pleasant weather and some time to spare I went out completed the pickup. Two days and a couple hours each day. Six bags of trash in all, about a normal pickup. So we have completed our obligation of three pickups for 2018 and will resume with four cleanups next year starting in April. Rest up, as I will be asking for your help! Ruth was born in Clayton, New Mexico on December 7, 1925 on her family's ranch. Because of the dust bowl, the family moved to Albuquerque where her father opened Marrs' Riding Academy. Her job was to lead trail rides. Later she became a hair stylist and worked at Linda's Beauty Salon at Nob Hill until she retired in 1975. Ruth won many competitions for her hair styles and even won first place in a national competition. Ruth married Francis Boydston in 1946. They built a cabin near the Pecos Wilderness around 1965 and after they retired, it became their Summer home and a place where they would spend time with their grandchildren. Ruth and her husband loved to travel and went to Fiji, New Zealand, Alaska and most of Europe. Ruth was an active member of Corvairs of New Mexico that Francis helped to start. They attended many national Corvair meets. Ruth is known for her excellent baking, beautiful quilts, ability to witch water and use a chain saw. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Francis. She is survived by her sister, Tenna Ellen Eckert, and her daughters, Teena Marcus and Sherry Gray, her grandchildren, Amanda Ashurst, Miles Gray and Kate Marcus, and her three great grandchildren, Kassidy, Colton and Sawyer Gray. An informal Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, November 1, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at Hope NE Heights church. The address is 4710 Juan Tabo Boulevard NE, Albuquerque, NM 87111. Donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association at https://alzfdn.org. ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== REMEMBERING RUTH BOYDSTON On Friday October 19th Ruth Boydston's daughter Sherry Gray sent an email: Good morning, Jim. My mom passed away the evening of the 17th. It was very peaceful. She didn't want a service but the family is working through that. I'll keep you posted. Thanks, Sherry What can I say - the club has had yet another loss. Ruth was present when the club was founded by eight of us, including her husband Francis Boydston. For many of us Francis was the heart and soul of the club, and Ruth was always there supporting him. They attended many club functions and were especially fond of meeting friends at Tri-States and at Ultra Van gatherings. When Francis died the club somehow continued without him, and now we found Ruth participating more than ever, attending events and often driving her beautiful white early model Monza to meetings. When she could no longer drive, Heula and I often picked her up on our way to a meeting. Starting in about 1981 the club was invited to the Boydston cabin in the Pecos and over the years many of us had great visits there. It was sad when Ruth's memory started to slip away and on a few occasions we'd visit and remember old times with her. Ruth had a rich life and even though she might not remember what was said a few minutes ago, sharing her memories from earlier periods of her life made her happy. Ruth often said she regarded Corvair people as her second family, and I believe many of us would agree. Ruth contributed articles to the newsletter over the years. I think a worthy tribute would be to reprint some of them here. ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== CORVAIRS OF NEW MEXICO, 25TH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL ISSUE, MARCH 1999 HAPPY ANNIVERSARY CNM Ruth Boydston CNM means more to me than anyone will ever know. I feel as though you are all family. I love to hear tales on one or another, especially about your Corvairs, which Francis and I dearly love. Where does the time go? Back in 1968 Francis got his first Corvair. Of course it was a '64 and it was not running so good. He tore it apart. I can't remember what he did to it, but when he got it back together, it wouldn't run. So he went back and dropped the motor again. He found he had put the clutch in backwards! It ran like a top. Needless to say '64 was our favorite Corvair. Over the years, after owning at least 200 or so, he could tell you what was wrong with a Corvair. Maybe it was one of you! He would get a call, listen to what you would say, how the motor was doing or the noise it was making and he would tell you what was wrong. Back in 1979, Teena, our oldest daughter, was on her way home from Austin when her Corvair wouldn't start after she stopped at a gas station. The attendant started to check some things and she told him to stop. She could tell he knew nothing about a Corvair. She called her dad. He told her what to do, and it worked. Over the years, after driving many '64 Corvairs, I got a '67 four door with air conditioning and automatic. I was so proud of that car. I went to a quilting class. When I got ready to leave, I couldn't get it started, so I called on my better half. I bet he laughed all the way to Juan Tabo and Menaul. All he said when he got there was, "Did you put it in Neutral?" Sherry, our youngest, was headed back to NMSU. Someone came around a curve and ran her in the ditch. She rolled all four tires off, but that little Corvair did fine. After driving so many Corvairs since 1966, we never had car troubles that Francis couldn't fix. He was always so good about little tips on how to do something. He was always giving tech tips about how to make something work better. If there wasn't a tool, he would make one to do the job. He loved to talk, especially to make a Corvair run better. Truth was, he loved to talk! Visiting with his friends was his second hobby. I guess you think I'm bragging. Well, I guess I am. Now there is no one to fix my coffee pot, iron, hair dryer or anything else that breaks. I guess it's a good thing I don't still have a Corvair. I sure do miss helping Francis with the jack, putting in a motor as he lay under there connecting the motor to the drive shaft. I dearly miss the Corvair. But I can still enjoy the group of wonderful people in the Corvair Club. Thank you for being such nice friends and helping Francis enjoy his hobby. I want to thank you for the wonderful flag pole. Also for remembering Francis with the wonderful plaque in his honor. Love to you all, Ruth ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== CORVAIRS OF NEW MEXICO = SEPTEMBER 2001 REPORT ON AUGUST CAMPOUT IN THE PECOS Ruth Boydston Twenty-nine adults and seven children showed up over our campout weekend, August 10-11-12. On Friday August 10 in the afternoon, in the rain, they started arriving. Thank goodness, one vehicle at a time. As they slipped and slid they finally got up the hill and began to set up their rigs and tents. We had a great time. Even with the mud it was very good. Ron and Debbie Deck worked so hard trying to keep a fire going in the rain. Some left early and some arrived late. Some didn't make it and maybe some who did wished they hadn't, at least when we all had to push and pull in the rain and the mud to get their vehicles through the slippery spots. Thanks for coming. I for one had a great time. I look forward to the next campout. Just let's do it earlier in the year next time so there won't be so much mud. You might ask Mark Martinek about the mud, but don't ask Mary Lou. Love to you all -- Ruth ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== CORVAIRS OF NEW MEXICO = DECEMBER 2003 CORVAIR CATASTROPHIES Ruth Boydston The most embarrassing moment of my married life was something that happened to me because I was driving a Corvair with an automatic shift. We got our first Corvair in 1964. Believe it or not, I didn't drive it much. But I did drive lots of others as the years went by. In 1988 Francis got a really nice four door automatic for me. No more shifting for me! On my first drive, I took it to quilting class. I guess Francis had started it for me and warmed it up. When I got in it to come home, I couldn't get it to start. I called my stand by. He came right out. He very calmly asked, "Did you put it in neutral?" I bet I was real red in the face. At the Tri-State in Ouray, Colorado in 1988, at our banquet, I was called up by Steve Goodman and presented with an owner's manual along with this story in front of everyone. If it hadn't been in good fun, I would have killed him. ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== CORVAIRS OF NEW MEXICO SPECIAL ISSUE = MARCH 2004 WHY I LIKE AND THINK CORVAIRS OF NEW MEXICO IS A SUCCESS Ruth Boydston I have belonged to several different clubs but none compared to Corvairs of New Mexico. We meet each month and have a get together each month to do something different. I've known every member for 30 years and most all of them are my family. I see some but not all and some are gone. Francis said while he was selling parts, they were a great bunch and he had never had a bad check from any. That's what makes them a good family. Even the women get together and while stitchin' and bitchin' there's never fighting nor complaining. How could you not love them all? It's wonderful to be a part of them (the Club). -- Ruth Boydston ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== CORVAIRS OF NEW MEXICO = OCTOBER 2007 MANY THANKS Ruth Boydston As many of you know, the plaque with all the recipients of the Saint Francis 0f Corvair Award was presented to me at this year's Tri-State Meet in Monte Vista. This was an unexpected but thrilling highlight of the banquet on Saturday evening. I have the plaque hanging on the wall in my home. I love to show it to anyone who comes to visit me and explain just what it is. What a wonderful way to help us remember my beloved Francis. ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== CORVAIR QUILT Ruth Boydston Don't toss those T-shirts and sweatshirts! Please start saving your CORVAIR T-shirts and CORVAIR sweat shirts for me. You can give these shirts to me or to any Sunshine Committee member. I will collect any shirts that are taken to the next Tri-State meet too. I plan to make a quilt to donate to the next Tri-State that our club sponsors in 2009. If I get enough shirts, I will make two quilts. The quilt or quilts will be a "throw" size or a "hanger" size. All proceeds will go into CNM's treasury. Shirts that you don't wear any more will get some good use! Thanks - Ruth ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== APPRECIATION OF RUTH BOYDSTON MEMORIES OF RUTH Brenda Stickler My earliest memories of Ruth and her Husband, Francis, were when they owned several Corvairs and an Ultra Van. That Ultra Van got a lot of attention and was totally functional. Francis had set up a Corvair Parts business. Ruth would often come out and talk to the wife who came with the Corvair club member who was buying parts. She usually offered coffee or a slice of a desert she had made. Our average age of our present club, is about the age they were then. (How did we get there... this fast?) Ruth attended car shows and Tri-States with Francis. Back then, it was rare for any wives to attend the club meetings, but she went to a few meetings, especially when Francis had trouble driving. After Francis died, Ruth joined the Sunshine Committee, mostly made up of wives of club members who had a great love of crafts. This group made table arrangements for Tri-State banquets and some fun door prizes. Wendell Walker was the only male member of the Sunshine Committee. Why? Because he loved to hang out with women who loved crafts! Ruth was famous for a low fat yummy chocolate cake. Her rich White Italian Cake was often actioned off at our November Bingo parties at House of Covers. Those bids had lots of competition. Ruth was known as a great friend to many members of our club, and she was known for always giving incredible loving hugs. The Boydstons were generous, inviting us to have great cookout Pot Lucks at their Cabin in the Pecos. After Francis died some members dedicated a flag pole at the Pecos cabin to thank the Boydston family for their dedication to our club. On top of all of this, Ruth was an amazing gifted quilter. She even mentored Anne Mae into quilting... a gift that has kept going. Ruth dedicated several Corvair-theme quilts to the Tri-States as a fund raiser. They were cherished by the lucky families who had the winning ticket. Our club did well financially at each drawing. To sum up, I would say that Ruth was the "pioneer woman" for other women who followed and got active in our Corvairs of New Mexico club. We so adored her and hope to keep her torch of commitment glowing. Our club was so blessed to have Ruth love us so much. We deeply loved her and will miss her. -- Brenda ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== APPRECIATION OF RUTH BOYDSTON RUTH BOYDSTON Steve and Rita Gongora Ruth was a pillar to the Corvairs of New Mexico as she was married to one of the founders of the club, Francis Boydston. Steve could call her "The First Lady of the Corvairs of New Mexico" but to Rita, she was "Annie Oakley." Ruth was a resourceful woman who never was short of a solution or a way to get things done. She along with her sister, Mildred were self-sufficient, bold, and strong. This was evident when she continued to carry the torch for Francis after he died. She continued to support the club by staying active and sponsoring progressive dinners and trips to her cabin in the Pecos. To live in the Pecos, you had to know how to take of yourself. She was able to cut several cords of wood to get her though any winter. It was amazing to see the stacks of firewood that she cut and stacked by herself. She was part of a community in our club where she shared her talents. We could all feel her genuine love for the people in New Mexico and for our Corvair Tri-State families. She attended many Tri-State events and solidified many relationships among the other clubs. An especially memorable event was the first time the "Saint Francis of Corvair Award" otherwise known as the "Francis Boydston Award" was given. It was a very moving emotional moment for all who attended. Ruth's close family was by her side every step of the way and supported her. Her grandchildren even got involved and owned Corvairs. Ruth even prepared a convertible for one of them. Ruth's smile and love will be missed. Thank you, Ruth for your time, your mark, and your contributions for all of us who were privileged to know you. Thirty-seven attended with 13 Corvairs. We needed items for our Christmas donations. A great Balloon Fiesta drive-in was reported. We reprinted a long and detailed report on the Powerglide transmission by Bob Helt and an analysis of pushrod O-rings by Ken Hand. Finally, a tribute to Dennis Ritchie and Ken Thompson who developed the UNIX operating system. Corvair relevance, you ask? Well, without my working knowledge of UNIX you'd probably not have seen more that six or eight issues of this newsletter edited by me. 2004 Volume 30 Number 11 #350 COVER: Del "Purple Corvair" Patten talks to Geoff at a club breakfast. We met at Galles, V-P Sally presiding. We had $2342.88. Over 200 cars attended the Balloon Fiesta car show. We elected officers: David Huntoon, Sally Johnson, Wendell Walker, Chuck Vertrees. Galles security guards wanted all to leave at the same time. We were exchanging newsletters with 21 other chapters. Dave Huntoon drove a new 1963 Falcon Futura in his high school homecoming parade. Kay Sutt reported on our Aspencade to Fourth of July Canyon. Steve Goodman told us about bad things that can happen with too much weight added to the trunk and how to fix pesky water leaks. Heula relayed a tip from her daughter: use dryer sheets, slightly wet, to get insect remains off your car. 1997 Volume 23 Number 11 #266 COVER: a nice late coupe. New members: Clint & Faye Jones; George & Beryl Montoya. Mark turned the gavel and briefcase over to Dennis. We had $8,032. Bill reported on the swap meet. We planned an Aspencade to Jemez Springs, Valle Grande, Pajarito Ski Area and Chimayo. Robert discussed the recent "Un-Fair" car show. We needed to work to get back in the real State Fair next year. Mark reported on the Board's discussion about a Boydston Award and its relationship to the Meissner Award. Tarmo reported on preparations for next year's Tri-State in Lake City, Colorado. Jon planned a visit to the Old Car Garage to see how to restore stainless steel trim. Ollie asked for volunteers to clean our mile of Old Route 66. Sylvan asked, if you rotate your engine backwards, would it "blow" instead of "suck" through the carbs? No satisfactory answer was forthcoming. A tech tip told how one expert installed needle bearings in a transmission countergear without using a dummy shaft. He simply used wheel bearing grease to hold the 92 roller bearings in place and carefully tapped in the shaft, going by feel and sound to center the shaft. Dennis penned his first president's letter, "Full'a Hot Air" and there was no mention of the rumor that Del suggested the title. Mike & Brenda invited all CNM engineers or conductors to take the season's last ride on the "Cactus Limited" railroad. In Mark's "Billiken" his hero discovers that Oakie's on Central was no more. Your editor obtained a manuscript from an Apple Computer Club person describing a trek across the Mojave Desert in the middle of summer. The plan to drive across at night came to grief when the car (not a Corvair) broke down and the family was exposed to the burning heat of daytime trying to get it fixed so they could escape to Arizona. Was 1997 a classic year for us, or what? 1990 Volume 16 Number 11 #182 COVER: a catalog photo of a speeding Yenko Stinger. We called off the Aspencade because of rain and snow. Bill Reider had the newly printed Clark's parts list which listed hundreds of items in part number order; a handy cross reference indeed. We elected officers: Steve Gongora, Will Davis, Charles Vertrees and Wendell Walker. Steve Gongora's "From the President" column bragged about his "Super" Corvair 95 Panel Van used every day in his House of Covers work. Steve also urged the members to participate in Club events to explore New Mexico. LeRoy Rogers reported on a great tour to Trinity Site. Most of the crew stopped by the original Owl Cafe in San Antonio for atomic chili cheeseburgers on the way back. Finally, this issue wrapped up with four pages of reports by Popular Science writers who drove the new 1960 Corvair around the country. 1983 Volume 9 Number 11 #98 COVER: a Model T Ford and if you had sharp eyes you could match the names to the parts. LeRoy Rogers, George Morin and Bill Hector were re-elected and Robert Gold became Treasurer. We stole, er, borrowed a nice article on the Corvair from Autoweek via Ventura Vair Chatter; Bert Levy said the Corvair was an American sports car that just got no respect from those caught up in the sixties muscle car phenomenon. Luckily we all know better. We had tech tips from Bill Reider on Silicone: Friend or Foe? (he said a little was your friend but a lot was not) and George Morin told how to install a modern dual master brake cylinder (he provided clearly illustrated instructions) to give you safer stopping power. 1976 Volume 2 In November 1976 we had to do without our CNM newsletter but an excellent issue would show up for December. ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== Enchanted Corvairs Newsletter is published monthly by Corvairs of New Mexico, chartered Chapter #871 of CORSA, the Corvair Society of America.
