We had a wonderful Christmas Party, and it reminded me how grateful I am for the Corvairs of New Mexico. We have a terrific club, and I am honored to be the President. The club is especially important to me because it provided me the opportunity to own my current 1969 Corvair and fulfill a dream I have had ever since I sold my previous Corvairs back in the sixties and seventies. I've owned a lot of different cars over the years, but when I looked back, the cars I most enjoyed driving and owning were Corvairs. Now I have another one, and I am blessed with the friendship of other like-minded people. My first Corvair was a used 1962 Monza coupe that I bought in 1965. It was dark metallic red, with a gold interior, with a 110 engine and four-speed. I was in college then, and was compelled to personalize the car. I added a wood-rim steering wheel, dual glas-pak exhaust, wire-wheel covers, wire-mesh headlight covers, and a white racing stripe. After a while, I realized that the racing stripe was drawing a lot of law enforcement attention, so I removed it and replaced it with a white tape pinstripe. The car was great fun to drive, and I felt it looked pretty good, too. After a couple years, when I had paid off the loan, I got stopped by the police because my mufflers had blown out and the car was fairly loud. I ordered a new set of glas-paks from J. C. Whitney, but the box was damaged in shipment and the crossover pipe was missing. Neither J. C. Whitney nor the shipping company would accept responsibility, so, with the impetuousness of youth, I decided to just trade the car. That was a mistake, for many reasons. I traded it on a VW beetle convertible, which, I later discovered, had been rolled while the top was up. When I went to Viet Nam in 1969, I wrote my Dad that when I got home, I wanted to buy a 1964 Corvair Spyder, preferably in that same dark red. But then I got the opportunity to own a 1957 Porsche Speedster, and bought that instead. About two years later, now having a wife and child, and a low-paying job in Denver, I had to sell the Porsche for even less than I paid for it. It's all about timing. That Porsche is now a six-figure car, but I sold it for $1500. In 1972 I became temporarily unemployed, and I had been working at a job that supplied a company car. With no other transportation, and little money, I found a 1962 Monza station wagon that I could buy for only $300. The rust holes in the floor were covered with metal tobacco signs, but it ran well. The car helped me regain a job, and it provided an inexpensive vehicle for camping in the Rockies, but I became concerned about its structural integrity. So when my finances allowed, I traded it off on a VW Westphalia camper. And ever since then I wanted another Corvair, but circumstances made that impractical. I went back in the Army, with frequent tours in Europe, so owning a collector car didn't make sense. After I retired, I had other jobs, none of which made me rich, so a collector car was still a dream. Until last year, anyway. Sales of my novels had provided me with enough disposable income to convince my wife that a third car was not unreasonable, and Pat Hall had just the car I wanted. And I am extremely happy. VP's Report: David Huntoon reported the Holiday Luncheon at Copper Canyon Restaurant is on for Saturday, December 14 at 1:00 PM, and reminded members to bring their donations for charity. He also reported he had printed up some magnetic vinyl window stickers for CNM, but the first batch was not weather resistant for the outside of windows, so he had a second batch printed. He will bring those to a future meeting for distribution. Treasurer's Report: Steve Gongora reported there was a balance of $6,992.12 in the account as of the beginning of the meeting, but a little money was received during the meeting, and he will be reflecting those amounts in next month's report. Newsletter Report: Jim Pittman reported the deadline for the next newsletter is 9 P.M. on Wednesday, December 18, 2019. This is earlier than typical, but the printer is closed for a week during the Christmas week, hence the early deadline. He also got a show of hands of anyone who objected to having their telephone number or e-mail published in the January newsletter member list. Merchandise Report: Vickie reported she received $5 for a new Care & Feeding book. She suggested a possible future tour of the Telephone Museum. She also asked members to remember to pick up small raffle items for Tri-State and future events (i.e., items on sale at Harbor Freight, or similar locations). Rita Gongora asked the men to dig into their "stashes" to provide more "male-oriented" items for the auction baskets for Tri-State. She has lots of "female-oriented" or "gender-neutral" items for the baskets. Secretary's Report: The minutes of the last meeting as published in the newsletter were approved by the members present. Old Business/New Business: Since the 2020 Tri-State is the major item on our agenda for the next few months, it represents both old and new business. The preliminary logo design by new member Lupe Arellanes and her daughter was passed around for discussion, and some minor "tweaks" were suggested. It was agreed we need the logo to be complete by the end of February. Dave Allin suggested CNM embossed pens for $1.50 be purchased for the registration bags, but since the Sunshine Committee already has pencils with Corvair sayings, the pen idea was discarded. Dave indicated the Marriott was offering very limited options at the $32 per plate they had in their notes for the banquet. Discussion among members indicated the cost they remembered was around $40 per plate, which makes several other options viable. Dave Allin will look into the options and report to the membership. It was agreed that any costs over $250 for the Tri-State should be approved by the Tri-State committee. Requests should be forwarded to Dave Allin for approvals. Promotion of the event needs to be forwarded to CORSA, and other publications. Suggestions for venues included CABQ, Hemmings, News, NMCCC and the Albuquerque Journal Activities calendar. Dave Allin said he would begin getting the notifications in these publications. The need for AV (audio/visual) equipment was discussed. Steve Gongora agreed to ask Jerry Goffe if he could lend us the microphone and speaker for the parking lot needs during the car show. After discussion, it was agreed the best option was to pay the Marriott for use of their equipment and operator during the banquet. Larry Blair has received confirmation that Apollo 17 astronaut and former New Mexico Senator Harrison Schmitt has agreed to be our featured speaker at the banquet. There was discussion regarding preparing photos of the Corvair entrants in the car show for display during the banquet. Lupe Arellanes and Kay Sutt agreed to work on the possibilities for this item. Tarmo & Kay Sutt agreed to work on a lamp or other car-oriented items for the auction. Announcements: Brenda Stickler reports that Charlie Mann's cars are to come up for sale, including a 1961 Corvair Rampside. If you are interested call 505-856-6993. Dave Allin reports that John Heald has Corvair parts to sell. Contact 505-239-3311 for more information. Bill Reider has moved. His new address is 7808 Palo Duro, and he welcomes visitors. Larry Blair received a thank-you letter from David Neale and it was passed around the room. David purchased the Reiders' 1965 Corvair and it has been shipped to David's home in England. We reproduce the letter in this issue. Finally, Larry Blair and Fred Edeskuty presented a couple of quick "lessons learned" tech tips based on their recent experiences with their cars. The general meeting was adjourned at 11:15, and subsequent committee discussions continued until about 11:40. Attending: Dave Allin, Lupe Arellanes, Larry Blair, Fred Edeskuty, Rita Gongora, Steve Gongora, Pat Hall, Vickie Hall, David Huntoon, Gordon Johnson, Steve Johnson, Bob Kitts, Lube Lubert, Jim Pittman, Brenda Stickler, Kay Sutt, Tarmo Sutt, Ray Trujillo, Anne Wiker. **************************** BOARD MEETING CONDUCTED BY EMAIL THIS MONTH **************************** Happy Birthday Wishes to January CNM'ers: Lupe Arellanes Jenny Finch Javier Gold Steve Gongora LeRoy Rogers Happy Anniversary Wishes to January CNMers: Vickie & Pat Hall **************************** Larry Blair received a letter from David Neale thanking the club members who helped get Bill Reider's 1965 Corsa ready to ship to the UK. I believe that it was one of the best ones we've ever had. The food was delicious and everyone seemed to be in a festive mood for the occasion. The crowd was just the right size for all who wanted to visit with our friends whom we don't see often enough. Vickie spent many hours preparing items for our party. She outdid herself with hosting the event. Her talented skills showed through as she distributed the numerous door prizes and no one went away empty handed. Some of the items included a picture frame, a candy dish, a nutcracker, 3 gum drop trees, 2 little Corvairs, 2 Hot Wheels, a Pyrex storage set, assorted tools, a men's valet, chocolate candies, and a wooden knife holder. Vickie also distributed red/green chile magnets to each family and a tote bag with a nice insulated bag for transporting cold groceries. Our chocolate Christmas cake this year featured a big CNM on the face of it, using M&Ms to highlight the letters. The strategic, painstaking placement of the candies was done by Jim. We also pointed out that this "CNM" represented the Real CNM, Corvairs of New Mexico! We appreciate those of you who donated door prizes. It is always helpful to have items for this purpose. And as you know, we operate on a small "budget" so we really love having items members contribute to share on these occasions. Thank you all! AND, thank you Rita for the oh-so-delicious Ferrero Rocher candies! **************************** THE STOREHOUSE COLLECTION Vickie Hall Thanks to all of you who contributed to The Storehouse this year. We didn't have as much as some years, but we know that anything helps. Pat and I will be making a delivery run soon, hopefully before Christmas. **************************** HOW TO LOSE 36 DAYS IN ONE EASY STEP (OR, THE PENALTY FOR BEING AN EARLY BIRD) Jim Pittman I have had a driver's license since the 1950s. Over the years I renewed my New Mexico driver's license many times, usually weeks early. The expiration date printed on my license was always one month after my birthday, no matter when I renewed it. It's easy to remember your license's expiration if it's tied to your birthdate. In November 2015 I had just turned 76 when it came time to renew. I knew that this time my new driver's license would be good for only one year. Sure enough, the expiration date on the new license was a month after my birthday in 2016. Soon it would be my turn to encounter the "Real ID" circus. One of the consequences of 9/11 was the establishment of the Department of Homeland Security and a real concern was the integrity of identification documents. In 2005 Congress passed the "Real ID Act" which set minimum standards for driver's licenses. You would have to have Real ID identification to go through security to get on a commercial airplane or to enter a federal building. A passport would work but a regular driver's license would not. States were given a deadline to comply with these standards. Some acted quickly but some asked for extensions to the deadline. New Mexico chose to kick the can down the road -- several times. When the federal government finally set an absolute deadline of 20 October 2020, New Mexico finally was able to devise a Real ID compliant license. Everyone in the state had to get one before the deadline or else they'd have to have a passport to board a commercial airplane. Thus it was that when I went to renew my license in November 2016 I knew my new license needed to be Real ID compliant. To satisfy the requirements I had to find and bring to the MVD office a multitude of documents to prove who I was, my citizenship and where I resided. D'Val Westphal in her "Road Warrior" columns in the Albuquerque Journal explored this topic week after week, clarifying what documents would be needed and, just as important, what documents would not work, to get your Real ID driver's license. It was complicated! There were stories of people being turned away at the MVD office because they lacked some critical piece of paper or their name was not spelled right. I did not want that to happen to me! I successfully rounded up all the necessary documents. It actually took less than an hour for me to get my new license. To my surprise, it was good for two years, not one, expiring a month after my birthday in 2019. Apparently that was because our new Real ID legislation changed the renew-every-year requirement from age 75 to age 79. Well, that's good. My next encounter with the Real ID circus came when Heula had to renew her license. She needed extra documents and it took some searching, including phone calls to a Louisiana parish clerk, to get them all. But we got them. It took only minutes at the MVD for her to have her Real ID compliant license. It was good for four years and the expiration date was a month after her birthdate in 2022. This year on November 8th, weeks before my actual December expiration date, I was near the MVD office at Menaul & Juan Tabo and I thought it would be convenient to go in to renew my license for another year. The clerk made no comment about my being early. I expected the new license to expire on 13 December 2020, but to my annoyance I saw that it would expire on 7 November 2020. I asked the clerk and he said that driver's license expirations are no longer tied to your birthday but to the day you renew it. So by being an early bird I now have 36 fewer days until I have to go back to renew it again! If I had known about the change in rules I could have waited until December 13th to renew. Then I would have "lost" only one day instead of 36! Supposedly the change was due to Senate Bill 278, passed last year. I went online and looked at Senate Bill 278. I could not find any instance where there was an explicit change from expiring on the month following one's birthdate. So I guess the MVD just did it for their own reasons. I doubt that the new rule will change back. I'll just have to swallow my lost 36 days. But you can be warned. When your license expires you can be aware of the new rules and act accordingly. Think before being an early bird! REPRINTED FROM: ALBUQUERQUE JOURNAL, MONDAY DECEMBER 16, 2019 ROAD WARRIOR D'Val Westphal YOU NO LONGER RENEW BY YOUR BIRTHDAY: For as long as most of us can remember, your New Mexico driver's license has expired a month after your birthday -- whether it's a one-, four- or eight-year license. No more. Jim Pittman called to report the change after a trip to a Motor Vehicle Division office; he noticed the new expiration date was 364 days from the day he renewed, not 30 days after his birthday. Charlie Moore, who handles info for MVD's parent agency, Taxation and Revenue, says, "Senate Bill 278 this year tied the four-year and one-year license expirations to the licenses' issuance date. Eight-year-licenses were already tied to the issuance date." Neither the bill or its fiscal impact report explains the change. "But, keep in mind, this applies going forward from the implementation. In other words, if you renewed your license last year, the expiration date stated on that license is your expiration date. The next time you get a license, it will be under the new rules." As for how we are to remember the new expiration dates? John Wiker told about our large breakfast gathering at the TA Truck Stop and quoted, "Everyone can do something and no one has to do everything" as a thought for the coming year. The Old Car Garage moved to 3232 Girard NE. Heula reported on our Christmas Dinner at Roper's Restaurant where good times prevailed. Bob Helt of Vegas Vairs told about Differential Lube Transfer Holes. Kay Sutt gave a review of her Prius V. Jim said, Look Back, Around and Forward to our Corvair club. Our member list counted 49 members. 2006 V.32 Nr 1 #364 COVER: A photo from 1968 showed Jim's 1966 Corsa turbo coupe on US highway 380 looking toward Sierra Blanca, plus a special New Mexico license plate celebrating Mark Domzalski's birthday. President Ray Trujillo ran our December meeting at Galles Chevrolet. Wendell Walker said we had $3,209 in the treasury. The Awards Committee assured us we'd have a Meissner Award at the March anniversary party and a Boydston Award at the Tri-State. Our board meetings moved from House of Covers to Business Printing Service. Club breakfast: at the Owl Cafe. Coming up: a tour of the Albuquerque Balloon Museum. A new member was Dan Palmer who was about to go to Maine (!) to bring back an Ultra Van. We confirmed a rule for members overdue on their dues: they will receive the newsletter the month after their dues are due, then no more. This works out to a 30-day grace period. The board discussed the 100% CORSA membership rule but no action at this time. President Ray told us the true and complete story of how he came to own Corvairs. He finally found one that did not smoke like George Burns. Jim wrote about club demographics and asked how the "baby boomer" phenomenon would affect our club as old-time, original Corvair owners moved out and new-time people who never had a chance to buy a new or low-mileage Corvair came along. LeRoy previewed plans for the 2006 Tri-State in Montrose, Colorado and Sylvan recounted the history of Tri-States from the first one in 1986. John Wiker told the story of his Air Force career and how it led to his owning a Corvair. The 2006 member list revealed 49 members from New Mexico and 8 from out-of-state. The corresponding numbers for 2020 are 36 and 7. The club is down fourteen members from fourteen years ago. 1999 V.25 Nr 1 #280 COVER: Mark Domzalski presented the Ike Meissner Award to Wendell Walker. We had about $7,062 in the bank. Debbie & Dennis Pleau invited us to their Holiday Party where you were guaranteed to hear an Amtrak train headed right for the living room at least once. We heard that Rachel Goffe had joined the Modesto, California Corvair club as the youngest member. LeRoy Rogers told us about having some old fenders powder coated. In the middle of the process the previously corroded and leaded spots began to melt! The heat of the powder coating process will melt lead. There were photos from another great Kirtland AFB Christmas Party. LeRoy arranged a February Garage Tour. We were going to see performance Mustangs at Garduno's. Canadian Bill Vance told us that Chrysler did not invent the minivan in 1984 because Volkswagen was first in 1950 and Ford's Econoline and Chevrolet's Corvan were next in 1961. Find this article and read a great story on the development of the Greenbrier. Tech tips: part numbers for replacement FC mufflers, details on re-coning your old radio speaker, rebuilding carbs, buying new carbs, and a discussion on which Corvair models were available in two-tone. No, it's not simple. We heard from several owners of Corvairs who said they were younger than their cars. And our annual member list included 48 from New Mexico and 8 from out-of-state. 1992 V.18 Nr 1 #196 COVER: a cut-away view of a 1960 Corvair. President Steve Gongora ran the meeting. Treasurer Wendell Walker reported we had $771 in the bank. We invited Mr and Mrs Ed Black to our Christmas dinner. Ed Black supported CNM with a meeting room for many years. President Steve reported on the Christmas dinner, a great success despite a big parade in front of the restaurant! The 1992 Meissner Award went to Sylvan Zuercher. Your editor provided an article on how your Newsletter was produced. By 1992 the process was heavily computerized. I routinely received MS-DOS discs from Secretary Chuck Vertrees, Apple II discs from columnist Bill Reider and e-mail from President Steve Gongora. Everything was put together on a 1980 Apple II Plus and printed on an NEC Spinwriter. It sure beat typing up the newsletter on an IBM Selectric typewriter! We had a half page of technical information on FC Corvairs, our annual CNM Member List of 62 members and a full-page Clark's advertisement. 1985 V.11 Nr 1 #196 COVER: a Corvair next to Grand Coulee dam. How can you tell that it was a 1960 model? President Francis Boydston ran the meeting. The treasurer said we had $503. Karen Jackson reported on the Christmas Dinner party which was a great success. Kem Owen and Dave Castiaux came up from Alamogordo to attend. Bill Reider's tech column told us how to install an electric fuel pump. We reprinted a magazine article on the Monza GT show car. There were tech tips on defrosting door locks (but who carries matches or lighters anymore?) and taking care of your car's jack. 1978 -- No January newsletter. **************************** ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== Enchanted Corvairs Newsletter is published monthly by Corvairs of New Mexico, chartered Chapter 871 of CORSA, the Corvair Society of America.
