PRESIDENT'S LETTER -- CNM AND COVID-19 -- DAVE ALLIN The coronavirus situation in our country is dire, and no one can predict with any certainty when it will improve. As you should already know, we have canceled our meeting for April. Beyond that, it is simply not possible to make any firm decisions about meetings or other activities, The Tri-State presents a very different and difficult decision. Obviously, we would all like it to happen, especially since we have spent so much time and effort into arranging and preparing for it. Whether it is allowed to occur is currently beyond our control, and it is simply far too early to officially announce its cancellation. We signed a contract with Marriott, which in return provided us with special hotel rates and wonderful support for our event, but that contract has a fairly strict, but normal, cancellation clause. If we choose, on our own, to cancel the event, we would be subject to very serious financial penalties, amounting to several thousand dollars. The contract does, however, include a clause that says if the event is canceled due to circumstances beyond our control, such as an act of war, a natural disaster, or government regulations, then we would not owe them anything. Right now there are no official restrictions on gatherings that extend into May, so we have no basis for cancellation without penalty. We also have no logical reason to cancel yet, since we do not know what the situation will be by then. There is no benefit for our guests if we cancel early, since the only expenses they have so far incurred are the hotel reservations and their banquet checks. The hotel normally allows free cancellation up to 48 hours prior to the stay, and we can return the money sent to us for the banquet at any time. Therefore it makes sense to continue planning for the Tri-State, in the hopes that the pandemic will have subsided by then. If, however, the situation worsens, and the state or federal government extends restrictions into May, then we can cancel without penalty and notify our guests once that becomes official. The only potential problem is due to the uncertainty. For our guests to get the special rate for the hotel rooms, they must make reservations by April 24. Many potential participants might want to wait to make their reservations, to see what will happen, and then miss the cut-off date if the event goes ahead as planned. My recommendation is that people who think they might come go ahead and make the reservations and ensure they get the special rate. If the event is canceled due to government restrictions, the hotel would then have to accept their cancellations without penalty, so there is nothing to lose. In summary, we will continue to plan on having the Tri-State meet in May, unless and until we are forced to cancel by government restrictions. The April club meeting is already canceled. We will plan on having the May club meeting until such time as we have to cancel it, and if so, we will send out emails and postcards. Meanwhile, stay at home and avoid contact with anyone outside your family. On the bright side, the improving weather allows you to take your Corvair for a drive or work on it in your driveway. It has been said that sunshine diminishes the longevity and effectiveness of the virus, but I cannot confirm that. It feels good, though. Stay safe. ............................................................................. ............................................................................. GENERAL MEETING MINUTES OF 07-MARCH-2020 -- KAY SUTT The meeting was called to order by President Dave Allin at 10:15 at the Highland Senior Center located at 131 Monroe Street, NE. Thirty members were present at the meeting. No guests were present, but long-time absent member Mark Domzalski was welcomed back to the meeting. Vice President's Report: David Huntoon had no report, per se, but he distributed the CNM pins he had made. Thanks, David. They look great! Secretary's Report: The minutes, as published in the last newsletter, were approved without being read in the meeting. Kay Sutt had no other items to report. Treasurer's Report: Steve Gongora reported the balance in the club's account at meeting time was $7,387.25. Several reservations for Tri-State were turned over to Steve at the meeting, and they were not included in this amount. Sunshine Committee Report: Vickie Hall and Heula Pittman had nothing to report, but they have been busy preparing all the goodies and decorations for the club Anniversary Party which follows this meeting. Thanks, ladies! Newsletter Committee: Jim Pittman reported the deadline for the next newsletter is 9 P.M. on Friday, March 27. Old Business: Much of the remainder of the meeting was dedicated to Tri-State discussions and preparations and the 46th Club Anniversary luncheon. Thank you to Rita and Tami for picking up the yummy lunch from Rudy's, thanks to the Sunshine Committee (Vickie & Heula) for the goodies and table decorations, and thanks to everyone else who helped make it a fun event! Twenty-eight people, 15 cars are registered for the Tri-State meet so far. Members are reminded May 1 is the target date for registration. Dave Allin passed around a sign-up sheet for the various duties needing volunteers for the event. Terry Price has sent out approximately 150 postcards to various Corvair or CORSA clubs in the region, inviting people to attend the event. Lupe sent us a first draft of the programs for both the Tri-State "goodie bag" and the banquet. They look very professional. Thanks Lupe! Terry Price and Steve Gongora agreed to seek a local source for dash plaques for the event. Mark Domzalski was announced as the MC of the upcoming Tri-State. Mark hasn't been active in CNM for a few years as he finished his career at LANL, built a garage and shop which is the envy of all the club members who have seen it and undertaken his passion for woodworking. However, he says he is just about finished with his final woodworking project for now and looks forward to pulling his Corvair into his wonderful shop for its restoration and spending more time with old friends in CNM. We were reminded that the Pikes Peak club deleted the Boydston Award from the 2019 Tri-State. The question now is, do we discontinue it at our Tri-States as well, or make other arrangements. After discussion, it was agreed that the Boydston Award would continue but would be limited to CNM members, and it would be presented at the Christmas Party rather than at the Tri-State banquet. It was also agreed the Tri-State raffle prizes will be posted on a whiteboard rather than announced at the banquet. These changes were made in order to allow ample time for our speaker, Harrison Schmitt, without making the banquet so long for attendees. Dave Allin reported the following announcements from NMCCC: A new treasurer has joined the group and has taken care of unfinished items left by the resignation of the prior treasurer. Collector Cars Appreciation Day is scheduled for July 15. Valencia High School and the Old Car Garage are planning a "Spring Thaw" event on April 18. The purpose is to celebrate Bob's birthday and will include free oil changes, inspections and a reception. An auto swap meet will take place at the Balloon Fiesta Park to benefit the Wheels Museum on May 3. New Business: Larry Blair announced he and Tarmo Sutt have planned a RailRunner train trip to Santa Fe for April 1, and all club members are invited to join the fun. Wednesdays are the "free ride" day for seniors. The trip is scheduled to leave the Downtown Albuquerque station at 9:35 AM and arrive at the Santa Fe Depot at 11:16 AM. If members wish to join the group at other stations along the way, they are welcome to attend. If you are interested, call Secretary, Kay Sutt, and she will make reservations at Tomasita's in the Santa Fe Railyard for lunch. The train will leave for its return trip to Albuquerque at 1:02 PM. Members could board the train in Belen or Los Lunas or other points in between. Check the RailRunner web site for schedules. This is a fun way to experience New Mexico in a new way and take advantage of the train your taxpayer's money helped build and supports. Tarmo Sutt reported to the club regarding the repairs to his 1966 Corsa's speedometer and odometer by Mo-Ma Industries in Albuquerque. The meeting was adjourned at 11:35. CNM Anniversary: Following the formal meeting, people queued up for a lunch of brisket and chicken with all the trimmings from Rudy's BBQ and some general visiting. The reason for this feast was to celebrate CNM's 46th anniversary. The highlight of the luncheon was the presentation of this year's Meissner Award to our ever-faithful founding member and newsletter editor, Jim Pittman. I, as the secretary, must say, it couldn't have gone to a more deserving person! Jim talked about what CNM means to him and let us know the joy his years of service to the club has given him. He talked about how the newsletter production has changed over the years and how easy it has been for him to produce a newsletter with so many people willing to write articles and provide photos and information, making Jim's job easier. Thank you Jim! OUR ENGLISH COUSIN -- Dave Allin Last month David Huntoon received the following email from David Neale, the Englishman who purchased Bill Reider's Corvair, which members of our club helped prepare for shipment. Good afternoon, David. I recently purchased the 1965 Corsa Coupe from Bill Reider, who has so sadly passed away, and have had much correspondence with his wife Lee, who with the utmost patience and, at least to me! good humour, handled the entire transaction to enable shipment of the vehicle to me in Leicestershire, England. I have also benefitted greatly from the kindness and generosity of several CNM members, and have received a number of letters, emails, and copies of the newsletter. I would very much like to become a member of CNM, and although there are trifling difficulties in my being an active member, I believe that I would benefit greatly from membership, and could send occasional pictures of Bill's Corvair that might be deemed suitable for publication in the newsletter. In addition, I would feel a bond with those members who assisted Lee so much to have the vehicle made ready for its journey to England, and get to "know" other members. I appreciate that there would be, of course, additional costs over and above normal membership, to cover the increased mailing costs. If my admission to membership is deemed appropriate, please advise me regarding the best method of paying dues. A personal cheque drawn upon a British bank is obviously of no use. I could, if you wish, send the funds to a PayPal account. I am already a member of CORSA. Kind regards, David B. Neale, in leafy Leicestershire, England. A safe haven for lovers of Francoise Madeleine Hardy, the Chevrolet Corvair, and any equipment that utilizes thermionic valves. After discussion with the club leadership, it was decided that Mr. Neale could be a member of the club, but we would not require him to pay dues, since he would not be able to attend any of our meetings or events. When David Huntoon told him this, he sent David this reply. Good afternoon David. What you have offered ... what you have given to me ... is a Royal Gift, as we say, and I really don't know how to adequately say thank-you for it. I will be honoured to be a member of CNM, and I know I will benefit from it in many ways. Thank you so very much. It is very much more than a perk ... I have been treated to many perks throughout the entire process that ended with delivery of Bill's Corvair to me in Burbage. I am humbled by the kindness and generosity of so many people in CNM. As I mentioned before, or at least I think I did, I will indeed ensure that Bill's Corvair be maintained and otherwise looked after to a standard that he would approve of. It is apparent that Bill maintained, or had the vehicle maintained, to a high standard. That will continue to be the case. There will not be any gross changes to the car ... I will, once I have managed to determine its original colour, have it repainted. That will be the biggest change. And I will replace the aftermarket door mirrors with original pattern items. And that is about it. I will then be in the same situation that I was in back when I was 23 years old, and acquired my first Corvair, a 1965 Monza Coupe. And that means so very much to me. I will indeed send an occasional, when significant, progress report. That I can receive the newsletters "electronically", by way of .pdf, is excellent, and of course will obviate any mailing charges. All I would ask is that I be permitted, then, to make a small donation to Club funds, if there is any suitable mechanism so to do. I will follow your instructions apropos completion of the membership form and etcetera later today. Naturally, whilst looking forward to reading all newsletters henceforth, the Special Issue will have an especial significance to me. When I do manage to get to Albuquerque, and hopefully be in a position to meet with, and thank, all those who assisted in the final preparation of Bill's car, thus enabling its shipping to me, I am a trifle doubtful that I will recognise you from the picture you describe in the final sentence of your last mail. No doubt someone will point me in your direction! Thank you again, David. Kindest regards, David Neale ............................................................................. ............................................................................. CNM 46TH ANNIVERSARY PARTY -- HEULA PITTMAN Thirty-two folks attended our 46-year anniversary celebration on Saturday, March 7th, including 29 members and three guests. We met in the large ballroom instead of our usual smaller meeting room at Highland Senior Center. The regular monthly membership meeting was held first. Unfortunately in the large room many members could not hear what was being said. Then the Meeting transitioned into the Party. Rita and Steve did an outstanding job once again in setting up and providing the food for the occasion. The Rudy's Bar-B-Que and sides were excellent. We also thank all those of you who supplied the ice cold drinks and other goodies to complement our meal. Terry Price presented the Ike Meissner award to our Jim Pittman along with an interesting history of how the award came to be. Jim has been producing our Enchanted Corvairs Newsletter for 44 years with no interruptions! Enchanted Corvairs won First Place in the CORSA Tony Fiore best newsletter award in the years 2005 and 2012 and Third Place in 2010. No one could really know what effort, time and energy go into editing a newsletter such as ours, that is, no one except a spouse! The hours involved are just incredible. It is an ongoing procedure that goes on all month long. The club can truly be proud of our editor! ............................................................................. ............................................................................. CORVAIRS IN THE TIME OF CORONAVIRUS Jim Pittman Maybe other people knew about the coronavirus plague before our Anniversary party on March 7th, but I paid little attention. We were more concerned with whether our health would let us attend the party at all. For months, chronic pulmonary problems and an increasing dislike of driving in busy traffic or adverse weather had resulted in our staying close to home except for necessary doctors' visits and trips to the grocery store. But the weather was good and Heula had been working for many days on table decorations. On Saturday we planned to go. The party went well. We saw old friends and the food was good and Dave and David and Terry gave spirited talks. The Meissner Award was an honor even if I mostly do the newsletter for my own pleasure. We all have our hobbies and strange interests; this is mine. At the party: No handshaking! But, we are used to that for years now because of a continual worry about catching the flu or even a cold. At our age we can't afford to be sick. We get our flu shots every year and we are careful to avoid "germs" anywhere we go. During the next week we began to appreciate that the coronavirus epidemic was escaping from a city in China that we had never heard of and moving into other parts of the world, notably Seattle and Italy. I saved the Saturday March 14th Albuquerque Journal because I thought that was the first day with serious newspaper coverage of the epidemic. I made a run to Trader Joe's on Sunday March 15th. Just before 8:00 AM there were crowds of people waiting to get in. The parking lot was pretty full and inside the store there were plenty of people. I saw two or three people wearing masks, but otherwise it looked more or less like a normal day. There were plenty of things on the shelves but -- no toilet paper, no hand sanitizer. Well, we had already heard horror stories of bare shelves at Walmart and Costco and Smith's. As the days went by the restrictions built up, some simply assumed by individuals, others mandated by the mayor or governor. Don't go to work (easy for us!) and don't gather in crowds (also easy for us) and don't panic buy and hoard things. Well, we weren't going anywhere so we had hoarded as much as we were going to. We kept in touch with friends and relatives in Louisiana and Wisconsin by iMessage and the occasional phone call. Their communities were having problems too. It was clear to us that there would be no such thing as "normal" anywhere in the country for a long time. If you want to be optimistic you can think of how the country went to a war footing in 1942, with companies like Ford building warplanes instead of cars. But this mobilization took months to happen. There was rationing of food and gasoline and rubber and travel, and many boys were no longer available to work because they were in the army or navy. But the country came together, successfully fighting two major wars simultaneously on opposite sides of the globe. If you want to be pessimistic you can contemplate the miserable level of preparedness by the government and the total overload of the medical system by an enemy none of us can see. Who is contagious and can give us the disease? Who knows? And if we get sick, will there be the medications, the equipment and the trained medical people to take care of us? Right now the answer would seem to be, probably not. People are out of work. The government bailout will give most people too little, too late. Rich corporations and fat politicians will continue to get their share of socialism for the wealthy. If we live through this, what will the new world be like? Will there be room for Corvairs? What will we do differently and better when the next virus comes along? And -- it will. https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20200325-covid-19-the-history-of-pandemics The novel coronavirus pandemic, known as Covid-19, could not have been more predictable. From my own reporting, I knew this first-hand. In October 2019, I attended a simulation involving a fictional pandemic, caused by a novel coronavirus, that killed 65 million people, and in the spring of 2017 I wrote a feature story for TIME magazine on the subject. The magazine cover read: "Warning: the world is not ready for another pandemic". ............................................................................. ............................................................................. Vickie Hall sent photos of a work in progress by Bill Darcy --- another late coupe he is restoring. Steve Goodman says, at least on March 21st at 9:30 AM in Denver, IT IS STILL WINTER! ............................................................................. ............................................................................. THIS NEVER HAPPENED - OR - SIXTEEN YEARS OF BIRTHDAY CARDS -- HEULA PITTMAN The scene on the cover of this issue never happened. Here's the story of how it never happened. According to our meeting minutes from March 2004, a committee to remember members' birthdays and anniversaries was set up. I was on the committee and we met in February 2004 and decided to call ourselves the Sunshine Committee. We decided to mail birthday cards to each member of the club, and to keep track of our members and their possible needs. I undertook to mail birthday cards every month. First we had to collect birthdates. We got most but not all of them. If you haven't been getting a card you need to send me your birthdate! Jim helped design a suitable custom card; no store-bought Hallmarks for us. After a year or so it occurred to us that each calendar year should have a new design. So, every year, we'd come up with a design to use in the coming year. We tried to use "happy" themes and "Corvair" themes. Jim was not shy about modifying photos to make a happy card. For example, the card for 2006 featured the music to "Happy Birthday to You" and the 2007 card had a big smiling sun with rays spreading out over a blue star-studded sky. For 2008 we photoshopped a picture of Mark Domzalski's white-and-red Rampside holding a flag and a gigantic birthday cake. For 2012 we presented a yellow New Mexico license plate with "HPY+BDAY" in big red letters. The 2009 card was occasion for a long photoshop session. We had gone on an econorun to Madrid in March 2006 (by the way, the 1965 Monza 110 turned in 27 MPG) and took several photos along the way. Jim had a brainstorm to make a fantasy scene that might have happened on this econorun, if we had only had someone in the back seat to snap the photo. First, he found a suitable photo of Wendell's red 1964 convertible as seen through the front windshield, and found a photo of the yellow Library Van as seen in the rear-view mirror. But, how to combine them to make the picture the imaginary person in the back seat might have snapped? Photoshop to the rescue! There was no photo from the back seat, so we staged one in our back yard. I pretended to drive while Jim sat in the back seat to compose the shot. Two versions are shown below. Then, three photos were magically re-sized, slightly enhanced and combined to produce our imaginary scene. We put the finished photo on the 2009 birthday cards. We did not say it was photoshopped. As far as I recall, no one ever asked. So by now I have been mailing out birthday cards for some sixteen years. At present I mail approximately 100 cards each year to our members, their spouses and children living at home. I list these birthdays and anniversaries in our newsletter each month. Vickie Hall, Jim, membership chair David Huntoon and I work together to keep an up-to-date list of current members' information. ............................................................................. ............................................................................. IT IS APRIL, AFTER ALL; MAYBE WE HAVE ROOM FOR A BIT OF APRIL FOOLERY. SUBMITTED BY STEVE GONGORA "Lexophile" describes those who have a love for words. SEVEN YEARS AGO [ APRIL 2020 VOL 46 Nr 4 ISSUE 535 ] Jim Pittman 2013 V.39 Nr 4 #451 The cover: Wendel Walker was proud of his red 1964 Convertible. President Wiker recalled his early days as a JROTC instructor. We met at the Tomato Cafe for our 39th Anniversary party. Vickie & Pat Hall received their Member of the Year Award certificates. Larry Yoffee previewed our Tri-State to be held in Chama, New Mexico this year. Mark Morgan (in the St. Louis Triumph club newsletter) talked about difficulties finding suitable tires and wheels in 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17-inch sizes for our 1960s classic vehicles. We ended with a "word search" feature with forty-nine words to find in the matrix. Burma Shave signs: ALTHOUGH CORVAIRS / ARE WHAT WE NEED / THEY'RE STILL UNSAFE / AT ANY SPEED / Corvairs! 2006 V.32 Nr 4 #367 Front cover: Richard & Gayle Finch found a Flying Saucer near Tularosa. Back cover: Larry Blair's Instrument Panel Restoration. Our new motto was "Laissez le bon temps rouler." We met at Galles Chevrolet and had $2,968.48. A new "old" member was Clint Collins of Tome, NM. Jim Gould visited. The Galles security team kept locking the gate before we were ready to leave. Ray Trujillo arranged with Highland Senior Center for a meeting place. David planned an econorun on the Turquoise Trail for April. Larry Blair showed us disassembled late model dashes. Sylvan Zuercher remembered Tri-States past and LeRoy Rogers previewed this year's. The 2006 Ike Meissner Award went to Tarmo Sutt. Self-proclaimed non-mechanic Robert Gold provided a tech tip on making a tool for adjusting your thermostats. Did you know thermostats could be adjusted? A tech tip discussed clutch replacement details. We planned a "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" outing to Isotopes Park, thanks to Robert. Our "April Fool" feature was a genuine and true article on genuine flying saucers by Richard Finch. 1999 V.25 Nr 4 #283 The cover: Les Campbell's idea for a two-seat convertible. Mark Morgan's Billiken bought a Fiero. President Pleau called us to order at Casa Chevrolet. Visitors were Don & Viola Smith from Alamosa and Don Heath, a former member who owned a 1967 Yenko. We had $6,833 to spend. The Museum's special cars for this year's car show were Packard, 100 years, Mercury, 60 years, and Mustang, 35 years. We has a talk by Tom Mumford of Maaco. For special paint jobs, see Tom. Jim reported on our 25th anniversary dinner party. Former New Mexico Territory governor Lew Wallace told us what the local area looked like before there were Corvairs. Governor Wallace also discussed the Hollywood film Ben Hur. Mark Martinek discussed the electrical-short-to-a-frayed-heater-hose problem. Another tip said, don't try to get gasoline out of a leaking carb float, buy a new one. A nice letter from Steve Goodman reviewed the contributions of CNM members to the Tri-States over the years. Bill Reider provided the answers to his 25th Anniversary Corvair Quiz. 1992 V.18 Nr 4 #199 The cover: A Texas motif by Mark Morgan accompanied his article, Driving in Texas, another in a continuing series. But, wait! The article appeared in LAST month's newsletter! An April Fool joke? President Steve ran the meeting, Secretary Chuck wrote up minutes and Treasurer Wendell reported $1,089. New members included Wil Boyd, Norm Brand, Tony Fuller and John Martinez. Wayne Christgau reported by mail that all was well in Iowa. Bill McClellan was taking over newsletter assembly and mailing. LeRoy reported on Car Council activities: the Great American Race, a visit to Galles/Kraco Racing, the CC Picnic, the State Fair, a Road Rally, a stop at Tinkertown, an Arts-in-the-Park tour and the Tri-State in Las Vegas. And, we had a short talk at the end of the meeting by our sponsor, Mrs Cindy Johns. An April Fool spoof of the campaign promises of political candidates preceeded seven years of political jokes that wouldn't be fit to print. A cartoon about logging in the national forests drew a complaint from Francis about political content in the Newsletter. 1985 V.11 Nr 4 #115 The cover: A drawing of the NASA space shuttle. Possibly there was a '69 convertible in the cargo bay? Francis ran our meeting, Bill Hector wrote minutes, Sylvan reported $418 and we had a slide and tape-recorded tour of Clark's Corvair Parts. We planned a flea market sale. Bill McClellan contributed Part III in his series on Learning to Weld. Tech tips includes how to remove those pesky frozen fuel line fittings without rounding them off, how to install a tachometer in the dash of a '65-'69 Monza, how to align your '65-'69 shifter tube and where to get a great leather steering wheel cover. 1978 V.4 Nr 2 #31 The cover: "Close Encounters of the Corvair Kind" by Mark Morgan. We appreciated Ed Black's Chevrolet for our meeting place. We had another great dinner at Bella Vista. LeRoy represented us at the Car Council. Plans for the San Diego CORSA Convention were featured. How to synchronize Rochester HV carburetors; thanks, Bill! Other tips told how to replace late model speedometer cables (Larry Claypool) and what spark plugs to buy (Paul Walton). ............................................................................. ............................................................................. ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== Enchanted Corvairs Newsletter is published monthly by Corvairs of New Mexico, chartered Chapter #871 of CORSA, the Corvair Society of America.
