PRESIDENT'S LETTER What's Up Dave? Hoping everyone is feeling safe and warm. Speaking of safe, the board and I have decided cancel our next club meeting. Recent events of increasing COVID positives and new restrictions informed that decision. The restrictions could be managed. I just feel the increased physical risk is just too great. What will happen in the next months can't be predicted. Just have to wait and see. In light of recent events it would be nice if we could organize some type of event. An economy run or driving tour? Take some photos, drive home, write something for the newsletter. We need some ideas. On a more positive note, we have two new members. William and Sharon Heil. Bill is a biker and on any good Sunday he takes his motorcycle to our local coffee shop in Cedar Crest. I am often there but can't put a face to name yet. Sure I have met him sometime. Linda and Tony met Bill and Sharon at the coffee shop and somehow the conversation turned to Corvairs. Linda texted me and I hustled down a membership form. I live just a mile away. I met Sharon and talked about our club and gave them Pat Hall's phone number. I understand they visited Pat and made a purchase. Details on that later. Welcome Bill and Sharon! Stay positive and safe, David These photos? Early coffee run October 17 and Route 66 Coffee in Edgewood. It was 45 degress, kind of cool for top down but warmed up quickly. Tony Berbig and I. ............................................................................. ............................................................................. He will hold the first meeting of the reconstituted committee next month. For those who agreed to ramrod different activities during the event, we hope you are still willing to move forward with these responsibilities. If you are now in a position where you can offer your time to make the 2021 Albuquerque Tri-State more successful, please let Terry, or any other officer, know. Remember that club members' participation is what will make this a successful event! DRIPPY LEAKS & FLYIN' FANBELTS - MID MARYLAND CORVAIR CLUB - SEPTEMBER 2020 Are Corvair engines interference or non interference engines? Here's what the Maryland club has to say. Question: Are Corvair engines interference or non-interference engines? Answers: * Non interference! -- Carl Obaugh Regarding the most recent question... I think the Corvair engine would be considered a Non-Interference engine; I don't recall ever hearing of damaged valves due to a timing failure, mostly because the cam is direct drive to the crankshaft and there is no intermediate gear or timing belt. I could be very wrong and would not be surprised if it is actually an Interference engine, so I anxiously await the answer -- Andria Raine * Interference engines have combustion chambers, piston tops, and valve lift that cause damage to all three if the camshaft drive is interrupted. This became an issue with the advent of cam drive by timing belts in the late 1960s. My guess is that since the Corvair engine's cam drive is by gears this probably is not much of an issue, or at least if it happens, bent valves and cracked pistons would be only a part of the damage. Then if the defect was the crankshaft gear it would wreck the crank, and if the cam gear fell off the cam, its bouncing around in the alloy crankcase would ruin it. * My guess is, the most likely Corvair interference engine would be the 140. It has the highest compression ratio and the biggest valves, and thus the tightest combustion chamber. Recently on an episode of Roadkill on the Motor Trend Channel the cam gear in a big block Chevy engine came adrift and they were able to put it back on the side of the road. The engine started without any apparent interference issues, and its wedge combustion chambers are the same type as on the Corvair. The most extreme interference issues I've seen were on many early VW diesels from timing belt failures. Not only were the valves bent (more like crushed) and pistons cracked, but camshafts and camshaft bearing caps broken and one time a lifted head which broke out the end head bolt bosses on the block. Again this is mostly conjecture on my part and I'm happy to be told I'm wrong. -- Bruce Culp Anyone from CNM want to take a shot at answering this question? Have you ever seen a Corvair engine quit running because some cam teeth were sheared off and the cam no longer turned while the crankshaft kept turning? Did the pistons hit the valves? ............................................................................. ............................................................................. Several locations were // candidates including the Boydston Cabin in the Pecos mountains or a local // park. Here are excerpts from three 2011 newsletters with plans and reports. 2011 September newsletter David Huntoon (President's Letter) We are having a picnic! We have been talking for some time a way to finish off the year's activities. It will be a casual affair. Just bring what you would normally bring to a picnic. Chairs, table, blanket and some side dish. The club will do the main items, dogs, burgers, buns, plates, etc. We will work on coordinating the side dishes so not everyone brings the same thing. We are shooting for Saturday, Oct. 15 at a local park. I think we will discuss the location at the next meeting so there can be a general agreement. We think we have a good place in mind. 2011 September newsletter Heula Pittman (Board Meeting Minutes) Plans for a club picnic. We would have to work around the State Fair Car Show and the Balloon Fiesta. It was decided that we would try for Saturday, October 15th. We have tentatively decided on Cutler Park in the Inez Addition. There is plenty of shade and street parking all around. It was decided that the club would supply hot dogs, hamburgers, buns and the soft drinks. City parks do not allow alcohol or glass bottles. The Sunshine Committee will take care of desserts. The rest would be potluck provided by members. We will discuss this at the next meeting. 2011 October newsletter David Huntoon (President's Letter) Our next event is the picnic. It will be October 15 at the Elena Gallegos park just off of Tramway north of Montgomery. Follow the signs. We figured 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. The basic food stuffs and supplies will be provided by the club. At the next club meeting we will have a signup sheet for those going and for side dishes so duplication can be avoided. 2011 October newsletter Heula Pittman (Board Meeting Minutes) Ruth told her that it is already too late in the year to go to her cabin in the Pecos: it's cold and the trees have already changed. We contacted Tarmo and there's no information on the gun museum at Glorietta. We think we should schedule both these events for early next year. Pat & Vickie reported, with photos, on two possible locations in Los Lunas at public parks. One has a dog show scheduled. The other has shade, rest rooms and shelter but would cost $25 to reserve. Heula reported on parks near Inez Park in Albuquerque. Some have shade and shelter but no nearby rest rooms. Jim reported on the Elena Gallegos Picnic Area in the northeast foothills that would cost us $25 to reserve. It has charcoal grills, electricity, nearby rest rooms, magnificent views of Sandia Mountain, and hiking trails up into the foothills. 2011 October newsletter Jim Pittman (Board Minutes) Review of factors for a successful picnic: years ago club members used to drive rather long distances for our Aspencades, but recently we have had poor participation at such driving events. Are we getting too busy or too old to drive very far? In any case, we may want to consider nearby locations for the picnic in hopes more people would attend. At the moment, however, we should choose between Los Lunas and Elena Gallegos. After some discussion the Board voted to go with the Elena Gallegos site this year and go to Los Lunas in the spring. Tentatively the time will be 10:00 to 2:00. We will need to supply charcoal for their grills and/or a gas grill. At the October meeting Heula will help to organize what volunteers will bring. 2011 October newsletter Heula Pittman (Preview with Map) October 15, 2011 -- CNM Family Picnic -- Elena Gallegos Picnic Grounds -- Sandia Foothills. Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 15th, for a fun CNM Family Picnic! It will be held at the Elena Gallegos picnic area in the Sandia Foothills. Refer to the map. * The club will provide Hamburgers, Hot Dogs and all the "fixin's", drinks and ice. The Sunshine Committee will provide Desserts and the few chips and cookies packages left from Tri-State. Club Members are asked to bring side dishes that would be good accompaniments. Suggestion include: Potato Salad, Cole Slaw, Pasta Salads, Baked Beans, Deviled Eggs, Green Salads, Cut-up Veggies, Dips and more. * We also ask members to bring folding chairs and tables if possible. And balls, bats, frisbees, croquet, horseshoes, tennis sets, board games, checkers, card games and more can be brought as well. * A sign-up sheet will be provided at the October 5th meeting. We ask each member to include who will be attending from each family and specifically what they will be bringing. * Make your plans to attend; sign up at the next meeting, plan to bring your side dish, chairs, table (if possible), and playground equipment. * The Open Space Division says we must meet and enter the park as a group. We'll know the exact time we are scheduled to arrive by the October meeting. * This should be a fun end of Summer - early Autumn celebration event to enjoy in our Sandia foothills! 2011 November newsletter David Huntoon (Report) If you did not attend the club picnic on the 15th, you missed a nice day. We had 40 people sign up and I believe everyone showed. A good showing of Corvairs in the parking lot too. Good food and plenty of it. The chefs worked doggedly (!) Robert and John. I was tasked with extinguishing the coals at the end. I prefer the simpler jobs. Elena Gallegos park is wonderful this time of the year. The stark beauty of the foothills and the fall colors were really worth seeing. It was a great day, warm with no wind. Good view of the city below also. 2011 November newsletter John Wiker (Report) What a way for the new staff of the CNM to start the new election year! The picnic was a complete success. The food was great and if you left hungry it was your fault. Many thanks to the Sunshine Committee and everyone else who contributed food, time and effort to make this a success. Why don't we do this every year? We could call this the First Annual CNM Picnic and keep it going each fall, changing locations from as far south as Los Lunas and as far north as Santa Fe. List of those who signed in at the picnic: Boydston, Ruth; Gold, Art; Gold, Javi, Sarah, Anne Mae & Robert; Gongora, Rita & Steve; Hall, Pat & Vickie; Huntoon, Dave; Johnson, Carl; Johnson, Geoff & Anne and Alex & Kate; McDuffie, Russ & Nancy; Pittman, Heula & Jim; Reider, Bill & Lee; Rogers, LeRoy & Emma; Scheflow, Ollie; Stickler, Mike & Brenda; Sutt, Tarmo & Kay; Trujillo, Ray & Sylvia; Vertrees, Chuck; Wiker, Anne & John; Yoffee, Larry & Elisa; ... and Maureen Stevens, guest of Steve & Rita. Total attending: 37 people. There were 13 Corvairs present. There were five Brand-Xs. And two bicycles! ............................................................................. ............................................................................. The COVID Pandemic TIME MAGAZINE, VOL 196, NO. 15, OCTOBER 2020 "How does a pandemic end? The 1918 flu offers a hint. Olivia B. Waxman "Public-health advice back then was strikingly similar to that of today -- urging mask wearing, frequent handwashing, quarantining and isolation of patients, and the closure of schools and public spaces." About a third of the world's population caught the flu virus. Today about half a percent of the world's population is known to have been infected with the novel coronavirus. The current pandemic is not expected to end until there is both a vaccine and a certain level of exposure in the population. ............................................................................. .............................................................................
