There was a very large, diverse crowd, including several CNM members and quite a few of us brought our Corvairs. There were also several other classic cars in the parking lot as well. Tarmo and Joel came down from Santa Fe and Pat made it up from Las Lunas. 'Lube' also attended as well as the Gongoras and Dave H. There were several photo boards of Geoff on display which was rather touching. They had enamel pins of Geoff's favorite flowers for guests to wear and Geoff's sister gave out some of her car themed decals. I still have the pin on my sweater. Geoff will be sorely missed. Peace. Corvair Sighting Heading home from flying model airplanes on Sunday April 9th I spied a familiar shape headed north on Eubank just south of Paseo Del Norte. A black early model with red trim and it was low to the ground. I was not able to whip around and chase the vehicle and find out who the owner was. Pity. Maybe I'll get a chance in the future to see that car again............ Park in the Park Rio Rancho held a car show at Campus Park on the 22nd. There were several parking lots full of vehicles and many food trucks. My friend Steve said he'd be there, so I wandered around looking for him when all of a sudden,........ I stumbled into a black 62, with red trim, 2-door coupe. Small world. I had a nice long chat with the owner: Shawn Kukowski. He agreed to stop by one of our future club meetings to talk about his car because as you can see from the pictures there's a V-8 engine smack dab in the middle of the interior. He found it on the V-8 Corvair Owners group on Facebook. I can't wait to hear that engine. There was a second Corvair at the car show. This one owned by Steve Tawzer. He also brought a 62. And he bought it from Pat Hall. What are the odds? We spoke at length, and I promised I would let him know when the next club meeting is a day or two in advance. Jeez I hope I can remember that. Old Route 66 Well, after the March trash-day was blown out due to high winds, five us were able to continue the club tradition on April 8th. It was a pleasant day and quite a few of the cyclists shouted out their appreciation. Afterwards Dave Huntoon and I stopped by the Roots Farm Cafe for the usual beverages and chit chat with some of Dave's friends. But I had to skedaddle early in order to make it to the club lunch at the Ironwood Kitchen. CORSA via Zoom Corsa had another Zoom meeting on April 20th. Larry Claypool provided a list of travel tips for Corvair owners. If you missed it, the lectures are recorded and can be found under the CORSA page on YouTube. New Mexico Council of Car Clubs The car council meeting concentrated on the Museum Car show which unfortunately is held the same weekend as the Tri-State. But if you are in town, it's definitely worth a visit. It's on Sunday the 21st and the theme this year is FINS. BE WARNED!!!! Mountain Dr. is closed east of Tiguex Park so ya need to find another way to the museum parking lot. I usually park across the street from the Science Museum and just walk over. If any club members attend the show, please take some pictures. Thanks Tri-States Last but not least is the Salida Tri-State. Just three weeks away. I plan on leaving early Friday morning and taking a few naps along the way (long story). Kathy Green has asked me to say a few words about the 2024 Tri-State....... And since Lupe has been doing a bang-up job taking point on organizing the Las Vegas 2024 Tri-State my job will be very easy indeed. Thanks Lupe and thanks to the rest of us minions lending her a helping hand. Cheers Y'all See ya at the car show or club meeting. Ironwood Kitchen provided very flexible seating for us. Our Car Club must have been under best behavior, because Chocolate Eggs and Jelly Bean-filled plastic eggs were given to all who attended. I was especially pleased that my son, Kyle and his wife, Rebecca, joined us. It was an enjoyable gathering with great food. (Thanks, Anne!) There is a nice size group going to the May Tri-State in Colorado. Instead of planning an event here for May, we can vote at our May 6th Car Club meeting to either head out to Jason's Deli on Louisiana or we can try out the Food Truck Park at San Antonio and Louisiana, after our meeting. I wish safe travels to our Tri-State traveling group, and look forward to seeing you all at our May Meeting. ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== TREASURY REPORT FOR 03-26-2023 to 04-29-2023 =============================================== DATE CHECK# AMOUNT PAYEE DESCRIPTION BALANCE = $ 4,486.86 ========== ==== ========== =========== ========================================== ========== 2023.03.27 6187 +$ 90.00 Dues R.McBreen 26 m CORSA +$ 90.00 $ 4,576.86 2023.03.27 2583 -$ 96.44 J.Pittman Print 35 Newsletters APR 2023 -$ 65.51 $ 4,511.35 2023.03.27 J.Pittman 30 Stamps @.87 each -$ 26.10 $ 4,485.25 2023.03.27 J.Pittman 30 Envelopes @ .161 each -$ 4.83 $ 4,480.42 2023.03.27 2584 -$ 0.00 VOID Voided Check $ 0.00 $ 4,480.42 2023.03.xx 2585 -$ 40.00 R.McBreen Refund $40 for #6187 payment -$ 40.00 $ 4,440.42 2023.03.23 6260 +$ 50.00 Dues J.Pittman 26 m CNM +$ 50.00 $ 4,490.42 2023.04.03 5850 +$ 70.00 Dues G.Johnson 12 m CNM,CORSA +$ 70.00 $ 4,560.42 2023.04.03 2586 -$ 45.00 CORSA G.Johnson 12 m CORSA -$ 45.00 $ 4,515.42 2023.04.04 0046 +$ 50.00 Dues F.Edeskuty 26 m CNM +$ 50.00 $ 4,565.42 2023.04.11 1790 +$ 70.00 Deposit M.Morgan 12 m CORSA, CNM +$ 70.00 $ 4,635.42 2023.04.11 2587 -$ 45.00 CORSA M.Morgan 12 m CORSA -$ 45.00 $ 4,590.42 ========== ==== ========== =========== ========================================== ========== 2023.05 MAY NEWSLETTER ============================================ BALANCE = $ 4,590.42 ========== ==== ========== =========== ========================================== ========== ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== Happy Birthday Wishes to May CNM'ers: Irv Brock Anne Mae Gold Pat Hall Happy Anniversary Wishes to May CNM'ers: -- NONE -- ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== CORVAIR LOVER LOOKING FOR COMPANIONSHIP ROBERT GOLD I have a question to ask you to make sure you're a good match. Will you be free Sunday, May 21, 2023, and have a Corvair? If you said yes, you're the person for me. May 21 is the date of Your New Mexico Car Council's Albuquerque Museum Car Show. Arguably this is the largest car show in the City of Albuquerque. Historically many of the cars on display are classic cars you will only see at this show. Unfortunately, this show conflicts with the Tri-State, so many of you Corvair folks won't be there. I hope you CNM'ers who remain will consider joining me at the Museum Show. It can be quite lonely when the "Golds" are the only ones with 'Vairs in the show. If you can make it here is what you need to know. The Museum Show runs from 10:00 am- 3:00 pm at the Albuquerque Museum parking lot, 2000 Mountain Road NW at 19th St NW. Exhibitors are encouraged to arrive early, around 7:00. There is an entry fee of $10 per vehicle. You'll get a dash plaque for attending. Please contact me at President@nmcarcouncil if you plan to attend so I can save you a spot. The show is fun, hanging with other car folks is fun, and shopping in Old Town is fun. The lesson to be learned is as the Beach Boys tell us, "We'll have fun, fun, fun" at this event. I hope to hear from you and to see you at the show! -- Robert Gold, President, Your NM Car Council ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== 38TH TRI-STATE CORVAIR MEET -- SALIDA, COLORADO Dates: MAY 19-20-21, 2023 Hosted by: PIKES PEAK CORVAIR CLUB Host hotel: The Hampton Inn and Suites Location: 785 US 50, Salida, CO 81201 Phone: (719) 539-7850 Register: Via the PIKES PEAK CORVAIR CLUB web site Deadline: MAY 12 FRI : Reservations for Banquet * * * * Pikes Peak Corvair Club Web Site: https://pikespeakcorvairclub.wixsite.com/ppcc * * * * The Official CORVAIRS TRI-STATE Web Site: https://TriStateCorvairs.com 38TH TRI-STATE CORVAIR MEET -- SALIDA, COLORADO ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== IN MEMORY OF GEOFFREY JOHNSON JIM PITTMAN We heard that Geoff was sick and was being treated. Chemotherapy was tried with apparently some success. Then there was a time when recovery seemed possible. A therapy session would put him out of sorts for several days but then he'd feel well enough to go to Pat's and help out with some of his many Corvair projects. Pat came to appreciate those visits and Geoff's friendship. When Pat phoned me on March 21st to tell me Geoff was failing rapidly, I knew we'd have an issue devoted to his memory. Although I knew his dad Carl from the start of the club in 1974, I did not know Geoff well. So I'm using my time-tested practice of finding articles from back issues of the newsletter to add pages to this issue. I hope you appreciate the articles -- some written by Geoff, some written about him. We have lost a good friend and a great Corvair mechanic and a wealth of information on keeping these unique, beloved and challenging vehicles on the road. ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== ODE TO A FELLOW CNM MEMBER ROBERT GOLD -- OCTOBER 2010 For those of us who have reached "middle age" we probably have many experiences that translate into a bunch of fun stories. However, we also have seen things that come and go that make us sorta sad. That's how I feel when I think about one of our members, Geoff Johnson. When I joined the club in the early 80's I knew little about what made our wonderful cars tick. All I knew was they they were beautiful and I wanted to own them ALL. Anyway, as the years went on and I tried to keep my cars running, I realized I had certain abilities to fix things, such as electrical and interior work, but heavy duty engine/suspension work wasn't in the mix. I quickly learned to identify those CNM members who could do certain repairs and the ones who would be willing to help me. That's what's wonderful about being in our club. No member stands out greater in my eyes than Geoff Johnson. I was President of the club when I became friends with a very young Geoff Johnson. He had great credentials. He had grown up with Corvairs and was the son of a charter member of our club, Carl Johnson. I had seen Geoff around as a little kid when his father took him to meetings with his sister Sally. But things changed while I was President. Geoff volunteered to help with computer issues for the club and then he started participating in club-sponsored technical activities. One thing led to another and Geoff spent more time over at my house working on cars and feasting on my wife's cooking. His touch was magical. I still marvel at his knowledge and skill. As time went by, Geoff became my friend, but even neater, he bonded with my son Art. Two second-generation club guys hanging together. It was just great! But alas, things can't last forever. Geoff got more responsible jobs at work and had less time to play with my cars. Then Art introduced Geoff to Anne and in an instant the two were inseparable. Seconds later they were married and then the proud parents of two future Corvair mechanics. As many of you know, once families start up, many of our previous activites take a back seat (you like my car pun?). So it was with sadness I saw Geoff focus his energies where they should be, on his family. I just missed having him around. ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== Reprinted from the October 2005 Enchanted Corvairs Newsletter REPLACING FRONT SPRINGS AND SHOCKS ON A FORWARD CONTROL PART 1 -- GENERAL DESCRIPTION BY ROBERT GOLD -- OCTOBER 2005 I'd like to relay to the CNMers my latest positive Corvair repair experience. As has been the case, this tale includes a large dose of Geoff Johnson and Sally Williams as well as a dash of Larry Hickerson. For many of you who have attended recent car shows you may have seen my 1961 red and white Rampside. Then again, you might not have noticed it if I parked next to Larry Hickerson's Rampside, since Larry has taken Corvair restoration to a whole new level. Anyway, I was lamenting to Larry at a show how the front of my truck leaned to one side and that I was thinking of replacing the front springs. I was also whining about how the springs I got from Clarks for a couple of my cars did not result in the ride height I wanted. Larry suggested that I look into buying a spring and shock combo that was being sold by Ken Hand in Michigan. His web address is http://www.corvairmechanic.com/ Larry said that the advantage of this setup was that it lowered the front end of a FC slightly and got rid of the up and down motion after you go over a bump. That sounded good to me, so I contacted Ken and had him ship me the parts. That is when I turned to Sally and Geoff. With a positive attitude, Geoff came by the house and within about two hours he had the right side spring and shock replaced. We decided to wait a week to complete the job so Sally could come back from her travels to Spain. The time delay also let me coordinate with Larry so he could be involved also. On week two Sally, Geoff, and Larry combined to finish up the job. We let the truck down off the jack stands and took a look at the results. The truck looked great! The front end was now slightly more than 1/2 inch lower than before and now the truck had a slight "rake" from the back to the front. Also, when we took the truck for a drive it performed just as advertised. Gone was bouncing motion when we crossed over major bumps in the road. I would highly recommend this change to FC's. ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== REPLACING FRONT SPRINGS AND SHOCKS ON A FORWARD CONTROL PART 2 -- TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION BY GEOFF JOHNSON -- OCTOBER 2005 FC's have always had a wallowing sort of motion going through bumps in my experience. It is kind of a characteristic that makes an FC an FC. I thought much of this was inherent to sitting over the front wheels, until I drove Robert's 140 powered VW van, which had a much gentler ride. Robert said that he was ordering a kit that would correct this in his 1961 Rampside. So the plan to replace the springs was set to go forth in Robert's garage, where "The Big Apple" as it is known resides. We started on Sunday by cleaning, positioning, preparing, and loosening 44-year-old suspension components. We laid out the tools needed for the job, and jumped in. As it turns out, the suspension had been worked on in the past, and one major change would make our job much easier. The ball joints on this truck had been replaced with bolt-in ball joints rather then the original rivet style. Usually, if the ball joints are original, a Pickle Fork ball joint separator must be used. The nut and cotter pin is removed, and the flat part of the pickle fork is faced towards the part that will not move, while the angled face goes against the ball joint. A few whacks on the fork with an appropriate (BIG) hammer will free the ball joint. Alternatively two large hammers tapped together on opposite sides of the knuckle will sometimes free it as well. It can be a lot of work. Our case was much simpler. After the shocks were removed, the bolt in ball joints meant we could unbolt them and lower the control arm. The spring came right out. Already we were way ahead of our planned work schedule. A note of caution here. Coil springs are under a lot of pressure and can easily pop out and go flying if proper steps are not taken. In our case we had the truck on jackstands, and after disconnecting the ball joints we used a large floor jack under the control arm to lower it. We then released the spring pressure slowly in a controlled manner. The spring then fell right out. Once the old spring had been removed we used a coil spring compressor to compress the new spring enough to get it to fit properly into the spring pockets. Then we raised the jack to compress the spring back to the point that the lower ball joint could be reconnected. After that it was a simple matter of reconnecting the steering arms, and putting the new shocks in. When all was said and done the job was significantly easier then we had expected. And that's a Good Thing! ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== Reprinted from 2008 and 2005 Enchanted Corvairs Newsletters ADDING AUDIO INPUT TO A STOCK CORVAIR RADIO GEOFFREY JOHNSON -- MAY 2008 Here are the pictures and text detailing installing an audio input line into a stock radio so it will accept an audio input line. The first picture shows the standard adaptor plug from an electronics supply store. All it does is convert stereo into mono with a built in diode. It's $2 at Radio Shack. One wire gets soldered to the tip of the connector that connects to the volume control, then another one gets soldered to the base of the connector that gets connected to the radio chassis ground. The second picture shows a wire soldered to the input potentiometer for volume control. For the ground wire, I soldered the other end to a connector that gets screwed down under an existing screw going into the chassis. The third Picture shows the completed unit. I made a little metal strap to hold the input plug to the radio chassis. This one I put in Art's new Corsa convertible with the Clarks' dual speakers that fit in the stock location. They are wired in series so as to approximate the original speaker impedance. The input line I ran under the carpet and out between the seats so that the installation appears completely stock. The radio sounds great and has plenty of power to hear while driving down the road with the top down. ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== SAVING THE CONVERTIBLES ROBERT GOLD -- FEBRUARY 2005 I was talking to Geoff Johnson the other day and he made an observation that made a lot of sense to me. Having a Corvair is sort of like having a cat. After you have one for a while and you take a liking to it, you start to get the urge to save all the cats/Corvairs you can find. I know first hand about this since I have many of both. I know I'm not the only one with this affliction every time I go over to Joel Nash's storage lot and see all those relics sitting there ready to be restored to their past glory. Keeping this in mind I want to relate the latest Corvair rescue effort by a hard working group of CNM members. Geoff Johnson had expressed to me several months ago his dream to find and restore an early model convertible. He lamented the lack of rust-free bodies and he showed me the one convertible he had managed to locate in Oklahoma. To say it was a rust bucket would be an insult to rust buckets - this car was a piece of trash, and to Geoff's credit he had done little to bring it back to life. What to do? The solution was to find Geoff's dream car and that is just what the CNM'ers did. Based on a tip by my brother in St. Louis I looked at some recent Albuquerque Journal want ads that listed two early convertibles for sale in the east mountains. Alan had stumbled on the ad while surfing the web. Geoff called the number and up turned two supposedly rust-free builders, plus parts, plus three engines for less than $500. I don't know who was more excited, Geoff or me, but I anted up the cash and the cars were ours. The question was what to do to get them to Albuquerque. That is when the CNM network got into gear. Larry Blair called me when he heard from the seller that I had bought the cars. In no time he committed to moving the cars and helping with the restoration. In no time Mark Domzalski had offered his state-of-the-art trailer and Del Patten and Prez Dave Huntoon were on board for the transfer operation. January 15 was the date selected for the transfer. In an operation worthy of the military man Larry Blair was, he arrived with his truck pulling Mark's trailer at the Smith's parking lot at 9:00 am sharp. Off Sally and Geoff Johnson, Larry, and I drove to Tijeras to meet Del and Dave. We drove the 6.2 miles down south 14 to Chris Crawford's house and work began on the transfer. However, as is usual with Corvair folks like us, we had to take time to marvel at Chris's 1966 Corsa convertible project car. If you ever see a young guy driving a marvelous bright orange Corsa that will be Chris. I think his car would give Jake Schlessinger's convertible a run for its money. Well, back to the convertible transfer. Picture this -- one trailer, two convertibles and the need to transport these beauties to the north valley to Geoff's Mom's house. I figured the sun would be setting before we were done... nope.. by 2:00 pm I was back home and the cars were in their new home. We are the few, the proud, the CNM. I just want to thank all the folks for their efforts. One significant part of this job was that I learned that six of us can lift the back end of a Corvair with not much effort-- if you want to know more you'll need to ask me personally about the particulars. I also want to thank Chris Crawford for his help. Imagine this... the guy selling the cars helped push them around with us. Chris is one nice guy. In addition to my contribution of muscle to the effort I took along my camera to record the events, so you'll get to share in the joy of our efforts. I ended the day content in the knowledge that two cats .... err .... two Corvairs had been saved from oblivion and would someday soon be racing down the streets of Albuquerque. I forgot to mention that Sally Johnson will now get a chance to have a convertible for her very own. She won't have to covet my 1964 anymore! All I can say is this has happened thanks to the generous members of the best Corvair club around. -- Robert Gold ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== ============================================================================ | May 2023 | June 2023 | July 2023 | | Su Mo Tu We Th Fr Sa | Su Mo Tu We Th Fr Sa | Su Mo Tu We Th Fr Sa | | 1 2 3 4 5 6 | 1 2 3 | 1 | | 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 | 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 | 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 | | 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 | 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 | 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 | | 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 | 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 | 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 | | 28 29 30 31 | 25 26 27 28 29 30 | 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 | | | | 30 31 | ============================================================================ SAT 06 MAY 10:00 AM Meeting: Highland Senior Center 131 Monroe St NE, Albuquerque, NM 87108 Phone: (505) 767-5210 FRI 12 MAY ----- Today is the Deadline for Salida Tri-State Banquet Reservations WED 17 MAY 7:00 PM Board Meeting via Zoom * * * Register for the May 19-20-21 38th Tri-State, Salida, CO * * * on the Pikes Peak Corvair Club web site: * * * https://pikespeakcorvairclub.wixsite.com/ppcc/ * * * MAY 12 FRI : Deadline: Salida Tri-State Banquet Reservations FRI 19 MAY ******* 38th Tri-State in Salida, Colorado SAT 20 MAY ******* 38th Tri-State in Salida, Colorado SUN 21 MAY ******* 38th Tri-State in Salida, Colorado SUN 21 MAY 10:00 AM CAR SHOW - N.M. President Ray Trujillo told us how a trash pickup and a car show were rained out. We were invited by Vickie & Pat Hall to a barbecue at their "southern home" near San Antonio, NM. John Wiker reported a great day at Montezuma Elementary School featuring his yellow Monza. An article by Mark and Mary Lou Martinek from December 2000 told of a problem with their Corvair out in the boonies with no cell phone service. Jim described "fifty years ago today" when he bought his first Corvair and headed for Alaska. Paul Seyforth of Denver lent us an article on the approaching days of computer-driven cars. Advice: drive your Corvairs while you can! 2009 Vol 35 Nr 5 #404 Cary Hubbard's red Lakewood at a board meeting. A guest was Mark Jones. Brenda previewed the Taos Tri-State. Heula's "Identify This Member" from childhood pictures featured a boy and a girl. Who were they? Tech Tips: differences between 1960 and later fuel pumps, too-long TRW lifters, clean glass with Prep-Sol 3919, GM nuts for aluminum wheels, an engine cart, and saying NO! to Armor-All. 2002 Vol 28 Nr 5 #320 Mary Lou Martinek's 1963 convertible. Guest Jim Matthews, a former member, owned a 1964 sedan with 29,000 miles. Mark Martinek reported on a Car Council car show in Los Lunas. An "Old Route 66 Car Show" was coming up in July. Mark Domzalski reported that the Flagstaff CORSA Convention was on schedule. Corvair Ladies organized a progressive dinner. Bill Reider was offering hundreds of items for sale. Bill Reider, LeRoy Rogers and Hurley Wilvert went to Raton to plan our next Tr-State. We organized a caravan to the 2002 Grand Junction Tri-State. Tech: Bill Reider gave tips on rebuilding carburetors. They would come in handy at our Saturday April 27 carburetor tune-up session at Del Norte High School. President Robert said since the weather was warming up he'd have to start using premium gasoline to keep his Corvairs from "dieseling" when turned off. Is this a tech tip? Is there a better way to prevent dieseling? Ollie Scheflow told us about a cruise to South America which included going around the Horn. That must have been quite the adventure. Jon and Debra Anderson and children were in Albuquerque. Several of us met at Sadie's Restaurant on Friday evening, March 29th for a nice visit with them and enjoyed talking about Corvair activities past, present and future. The Andersons enjoy living in Colorado Springs but we believe their hearts are still in New Mexico. Your editor received a nice letter from former member Robin De Vore who happened across our web page and read all the back issues! The De Vores were retiring to a farm in South Australia! The topic of "Dummy of the Month Club" was updated by Del Patten and Chuck Sadek. Finally, Mark Martinek gave us a classic article on a trip to a Corvair gathering in St. George, Utah. All Corvair fans are advised to re-read this article about his amazing adventure. 1995 Vol 21 Nr 5 #236 A drawing of a Lakewood. Larry Blair ran the meeting. Joe Ashton and Ted Yachik were visitors and both joined CNM. Several upcoming Car Council events were mentioned. Dennis Pleau said we were trying to get copies of the budgets from recent conventions to guide our convention plans. We needed a "convention handbook" but had to write our own! CNM belt buckles, rebuilt harmonic balancers and new Clark's catalogs were on order. Larry's tech talk was about early turn signal repair. We made a tour to the Travertine Marble plant near Belen. A report on the tour described the snowy April weather and the amazing marble saws and other equipment. Lots of tech tips: use TWO steering wheel covers to make a fat, easy-to-grip wheel; replace your old cracked shifter boot with a new one from J.C. Whitney; beware over-filling your Powerglide; add a bushing to make your late shifter work like an early one. Otto Mechanic visited a shrink to help him deal with his obsession with automobiles. The visit was a success, but not the way Mrs. Mechanic intended! 1988 Vol 14 Nr 5 #152 Cover: an Austin-Healey 3000, your editor's first sports car. He sold it to buy a new turbocharged Corsa! The Tri-State in Colorado and the Museum Car Show were the same weekend this year. Bruce Phillips (Professional Paint Supply) gave us an excellent talk on painting your car. Bill Reider answered the question, "What is a tune-up?" and provided an extensive check list. A good reference. 1981 Vol 7 Nr 5 # 68 We worried about insurance costs and schemed ways to make money. We discussed going to a slalom in Los Alamos. Jack Bryan put on our April econo-run. Richard Twilley and his 1963 coupe excelled at 38.37 MPG; Pittman's 1965 Corsa convertible 140 and Lawrence's 1966 Monza coupe 110 tied for second place at 32.41 MPG. The best automatic was Reider's 1965 coupe 110 at 30.32 MPG. Those were the days! A tech tip: Dick Hartje (San Diego) told how an apparently good scissors jack let a car crash down with no warning! Never get under a jacked-up car until it is blocked with sturdy jack stands. Forty-nine years ago: The new club met at Duncan Puett's shop and admired his Corvair-powered dirt track race cars.
