FROM THE PRESIDENT
GREG NELSON

October Program
Be sure to attend the meeting on October 7th, Tarmo will continue with
his presentation of the restoration of his beautiful late model. If I recall
correctly this restoration took 12 years and it shows.

Election Candidates
The officer candidates will be 'voted-in' at the October meeting.
		The candidates are:
		Social Coordinator: Brenda Stickler
		Treasurer: Steve Gongora
		Vice President: Robert Gold
		Membership Coordinator: Lupe Arellanes
		President: Gregory Nelson
		Secretary: David Huntoon

2nd Annual Los Luceros Field Trip
From a suggestion from Maggie Kitts, Brenda Stickler organized a field
trip to Los Luceros Farm in October 2022. It was such a hit we decided to return
this year. Located just north of Espanola, this plantation has an apple orchard
(you pick them, you keep them) and abuts the banks of the Rio Grande. We'll meet
in the parking lot of Buffalo Casino at 9:00am and follow Tarmo through scenic
backroads to the site. Bring lunch as we will picnic there as well.

State Fair
Robert Gold has written about the State Fair, but I'll say a few words:
We had a great time!!! I got to the Central Mercado parking lot very early and
chatted a bit with the GTO club until the Gold Convoy arrived. During the show
Tarmo showed how his car is wired up for electronic ignition (see next
paragraph). The departure convoy at the end of the day is a hit with the
Fairgoers as most of them it seems are lined up along our departure route taking
pictures and video. This was my second year attending the Corvair show. Next
year will be my third. Will I have a third car next year or will I bring the '64
with its $$$ improvements????

64 Electronic Ignition Update
Ding-Dong!!! I'm attempting to add electronic ignition to the '64. I
printed out instructions from the Pertronix website, and after installing the
ignitor as shown in the instructions it became apparent something was not quite
right because the magnetic ring was not going to fit. Hmmm. I emailed Clark's
for suggestions. Their suggestion: "Install the ignitor on the other side of the
breaker plate." Duh!! Ok, so that problem was resolved. Next issue is wiring 12
Volts from the harness to the distributor. Better have the fire extinguisher
nearby. Just in case.

Route 66 Cleanup
This will be our last clean up for 2023. We'll tidy up the middle
section. Head west from MM6 and park on the shoulder along the west-to-southwest
curve (closest distance to the highway). Start time is 8:00 am. I'll be there
around 7:45 am. Afterwards of course we'll head to the Rose Farm Cafe for
beverages and conversation.

Tri-State T-Shirt
I finally bought MS Office for my home computer, so I've been working on
the T-Shirt design with MS Power Point. I've taken some of the suggestions and
cobbled them together. Hopefully by the November meeting there'll be a few
preliminary designs.

NMCCC - Last Event
The last event for the 2023 was the Sock Hop Car Show at the Enchanted
Trails RV Park on Route 66. CNM contributed a $50 gift card from AutoZone. The
card went to the winner of the Hula Hoop contest. On hand was Su Rymarz's
beautiful Blue Impala.

The 2023 State Fair Car Show
Robert Gold

The String Continues!

Hi Folks. CNM'ers who have attended the State Fair Car Show sometime during its
27 years run know one fact - if Robert Gold is there the weather will be great.
The question is - Is it possible that this is just a coincidence? I would agree
with that, but for one fact. That fact is that in 2019 I was unable to attend
and guess what happened? The day started out wet and didn't improve. I should
note that Geoff Johnson filled in as show manager and did an amazing job under
really bad conditions. With all that in mind I realized I needed to make sure I
was around in the future. So here we are in 2023, I attended the show and, of
course, the weather was great.

I guess I should now tell you about what happened at this year's event. You
already know that the weather was great. When we arrived at the meeting place
there were twelve Corvairs and a Roush Mustang. What? A Mustang? Yep. Dave
Huntoon showed us his grit by being there albeit in a Mustang to wish us well
with the event though he was "under the weather" and couldn't attend. By the way
it was Dave's birthday! Happy birthday Dave and get better soon.

After the GTO club got under way, we followed closely through gate 3 into the
fairgrounds. I have to say that our arranging the cars for display wasn't our
finest hour, but after many attempts the cars were parked and ready for the
crowds. I need to thank my true love for her help with the parking chaos! It was
a wonderful group of Corvairs indeed.

The following is a list of the cars and their owners.

Name Car
 1. Robert Gold .......... 1961 Rampside (Big Orange)
 2. Art Gold ............. 1964 Monza (The Covid Car)
 3. Robert Gold .......... 1964 500 (Mrs. Moulder)
 4. Javi Gold ............ 1966 Monza (Albert)
 5. Pat Hall ............. 1965 Monza 4D (The Blue Wonder!)
 6. Robert Gold .......... 1963 Monza Convertible (Beater)
 7. Anne Mae Gold ........ 1961 Lakewood (Eyore)
 8. Tarmo Sutt ........... 1965 Corsa Convertible (The Nicest)
 9. Sally Williams ....... 1966 500 (Second Generation)
10. Greg Nelson .......... 1964 Spyder (Soon to have a turbo!)
11. Robert Gold .......... 1963 Convetible (Cave Girl)
12. Sara Gold ............ 1964 Monza (Bob Saggett)

I would now like to thank my friends who got up early and help ferry the Gold
family cars to the event. The ferry gang -- Mike and Diane, Gary and Sylvia,
Betty and Coach Curtis, and Katie, The Golds have a bunch of really wonderful
friends!

Once the cars were in place the awards judging took place both by CNM'ers and
representatives of the Fair. Here are the awards:

1. Robert Gold ---- 1961 Rampside -- Best FC
2. Tarmo Sutt ----- 1965 Corsa ----- Best Late & 1st Place State Fair Award
3. Anne Mae Gold -- 1961 Lakewood -- 2nd Place Sate Fair Award
4. Greg Nelson ---- 1964 Spyder ---- Best Early
5. Sara Gold ------ 1964 Monza ----- Best Gold Family Car

You might notice that there is an award for the "Best Gold Family Car." That's
because through the years my family has turned out many cars for this show. I
challenge other members of CNM to match our enthusiasm for this event and show
up with you ride! Before I wrap this up I'd like to single

===PAGE=05===

out Craig Vencill for special thanks. Craig oversees all the car show action at
the Fair. He has done this so long I can't remember when he wasn't doing that.
He has been so kind to us and I want CNM to know about him.
Here's Craig in the flesh: [photo]

Well, that's it for 2023. I challenge the club to continue its support of this
show and make our event even better in 2024. -- Robert Gold

Las Vegas Tri-State 2024

Scenic Las Vegas, New Mexico has strong historic roots in the Santa Fe Trail.
The city was founded in 1838 as part of a land grant approved by Governor
Francisco Sarracino; Vegas Grandes, as it was called, quickly became an essen-
tial stop for the pioneers, explorers, and traders that traversed the Santa Fe
Trail.

As a result of the Mexican American War, the American Southwest switched from
Mexican to American ownership. Las Vegas remained an important stop along the
trail, allowing the city to grow economically despite its newfound political
affiliation.

Building a City

By 1846 the town's stock of adobe structures had grown considerably, especially
around the plaza-the focal point of commerce and government in many Hispano
settlements. The population of Las Vegas had gone through a small boom, with
somewhere between two and three hundred people living in the village. During
this transition to American rule, members of the United States Army began to
circulate through the town taking note of unremarkable yet functioning it was.

Las Vegas on the Trail

An undated photo of a marching band in front of the Plaza Hotel. [source]
Between its founding and the beginning of the Civil War, Las Vegas thrived as
frontier town operating on the Santa Fe Trail. Traveler, trader, and military
accounts describe a small but important town dependent on the commerce brought
by the trail:

"As we drew near Las Vegas we noted that the "bottoms" of the little creek
running near the town were cultivated in corn, with occasional patches of
vegetables, the land enclosed by fences, but flanked by irrigation ditches sup-
plying the necessary water and the crops were looking remarkably well, although
the weather had been dry for some weeks... Las Vegas was a compactly-built town
of probably two or three hundred inhabitants, the houses are for the most part
built of adobe bricks or tufts of sod, with a corral in the rear. The herds...
were driven in about sunset."

On July 4, 1879 the railroad came to Las Vegas. With it came new American
architectural styles utilizing stone-cut bricks -- most notably the Victorian
style, visible today in many of the buildings surrounding the plaza.
The Plaza Hotel, a fixture on the plaza since the mid-nineteenth century,
remains one of the most important examples of Victorian architecture in Las
Vegas.

Tri-State Registration: Here is a registration you can fill and send for the
Las Vegas, NM Meet.

Former CNM member Will Davis:

Will Davis was a devoted member of CNM for many years and moved to Florida to
work for NASA (National Aeronautical and Space Administration). He had retired
but continued to support the community including portraying Santa Claus every
Christmas. Here is his latest condition:

Here is a brief summary from the day of Will's accident to now:

-- Tuesday, 22 August, at 2:15pm, Will was riding his red Silver Wing
motorcycle south on US 1 just south of NASA Blvd.
-- A car pulled out to turn left onto US 1 but did not see the motorcycle--the
driver claimed there was a southbound car blocking the driver's view of Will.
-- Will hit the car and was thrown off the motorcycle. EMS responded and took
him to Health First Holmes Regional Hospital Emergency Room (ER).
-- Sachi learned of the accident at about 4pm when someone from the ER called
her and told her that Will had been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
-- Will's injuries: both collar bones broken; both arms broken; left shoulder
injured; 5 or 6 ribs broken; broken pelvis; some kind of injury to a few spinal
vertibrae plus a bad scrape on his back; some others scrapes and bruises; no
broken bones in his legs.
-- On day 3 in the ICU, they decided to shave his beard & mustache and cut his
hair to make it easier to care for his hygiene.
Will was on morphene while in the ICU and not able to communicate clearly due to
the medication.
-- As most of you know, Will has worked as Santa during the holiday season for
the past 40 years and before the accident had said this would be his last time
this year.

As of September 22, 2023

Will is settling into Kindred Hospital since his transfer there from Holmes on
Friday. Sachi said the doctors, nurses, and everyone involved with Will have
been busy studying the referral notes and communicating with the team at Holmes.
To Sachi, it seems this week is devoted to assessing and observing Will as they
get a baseline on his condition before deciding on a plan for his long-term
recovery.

CNM Trip to Los Luceros on October 21, 2023
Check for details (information from Wikepedia)
Brenda Stickler

Los Luceros Hacienda, in Rio Arriba County, New Mexico, near Los Luceros, New
Mexico, is a historic site which was listed on the National Register of Historic
Places in 1983.[1] The hacienda property adjoins, or is close to, the Rio
Grande. It is on a private road about .25 miles (0.40 km) off County Route 41.
[Note 1]

History

"Los Luceros is one of the most complete 19th century haciendas in northern New
Mexico. The historic ranch complex includes five contributing buildings: a
large, two-storied, double-galleried house in the American plantation style, a
Late Victorian cottage, a chapel, a flat-roofed building said to have been used
for a time as a jail, and a guest house."

The Los Luceros Chapel was documented by the Historic American Buildings Survey
(HABS) at some time after 1933.

[2] The chapel may now be known as "Capilla de Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe"
[Note 2]

The buildings are built of adobe brick in what is now termed Territorial Style,
a style which mixed local materials and methods with Greek Revival and/or Gothic
Revival detailing. "The buildings are constructed of adobe brick and feature the
architectural styles of New Mexico's Territorial Period of the second half of
the 19th century. The present form of the ranch house is of the Greek Revival
Style, but its thick adobe walls apparently incorporate portions of the walls of
an 18th century Spanish rancho which had been erected on the ruins of a
prehistoric Indian dwelling site. Unlike the scattered grouping of
architecturally attractive buildings that formed the 19th century ranch complex
of Los Luceros, the original Spanish rancho was a fortress-like Indian outpost
of solid adobe walls that enclosed living quarters, storerooms and stables in
one structure. Only a chapel, which preceded the present one, was a separate
building. Located in the lush floodplain of cottonwood forests bordering the Rio
Grande, the rancho cultivated a large apple orchard, as does Los Luceros today.
The ranch house, "jail" and guest house received some remodeling in the 1920s in
the Spanish/Colonial - Pueblo Revival Style." [3]

Some aspect of the site dates to c.1350 apparently. [3]

It was deemed significant:

The historic hacienda complex of Los Luceros is one of the best preserved
examples of the architecture of New Mexico's Territorial Period of the second
half of the 19th century. The ranch house, a two-story adobe structure, is one
of two surviving New Mexico examples of the Greek Revival Style American
plantation-type house surrounded by a two-level gallery. The adobe out-
buildings, which consist of a fine example of a small rural chapel, a Late
Victorian cottage, a small flatroofed "jail" building typical of New Mexico's
indigenous architecture, and a guesthouse complete the assemblage of Territorial
Period types and styles. [3]
