Week 7 Scholarly Questions and Analytical Thinking
Body Composition Models
Class, on Exam 2 I will include Einthoven’s Triangle labeling as well as AVF, AVL, and AVR. It is important!
Body Fat: Too Much or Too Little
What are some diseases associated with too MUCH body fat?
What are some diseases associated with too LITTLE body fat?
What does relative mean when expressed with body fat?

Class, what is the obesity %BF for 18-34 years of age for males and females
What are some reasons body composition assessment is completed?

Body Composition Models
What is the body’s main composition constituents?
Who is Siri and what model of body composition did he present?
What does FFB stand for?
There are FIVE assumptions of the two-component model. Please become more familiar with these.

The reference body is assumed to be:
What percent water?
What percent protein?
What percent mineral?

What does hydrodensitomety mean?
T or F: In this method body density (Db) is converted to percent body fat.

What do we know about the FFB.
Does it vary with age?
Does it vary with gender?
Does it vary with activity level?
Does if vary with ethnicity?
Does it vary with level of fatness?
Does in vary with children?

Hydrostatic Weighing
What does body density represent?
What does mass equal?
What is body volume?
What is the ‘tare’ weight?
When measuring UWW, approximately how many trials would you do (according to lecture and the text)? You must average 3 trials within how many kilograms? (0.1 or 0.2 or 0.3 kg)
In hydrostatic weighing, where are the sources of trapped air in the body? Hydrostatic weighing actually determines a person’s BODY VOLUME. This is done by subtracting a person’s UWW from weight (mass) and then correcting (dividing) by the density of water. Next the air from the GI tract (GV) and lungs (RV for residual lung volume) is subtracted. Once body volume is calculated, one can calculate Db. Once you have Db, choosing the appropriate formula allows you to estimate %BF.
The text has several guidelines for hydrostatic weighing. Please be familiar with these guidelines
