Periodization Scholarly Questions and Analytical Thinking
Class please be prepared to answer the following questions on periodization for the exam

Define periodization

Helpful Tip: Periodization is a planned progression of resistance exercise designed to maximize performance and minimize overtraining and injury.

What are the two main components of periodization design?

Helpful Tip: Volume(which is sets x reps) and intensity(which is the percent of 1-repetition maximum or a rep zone intensity; remember, intensity refers to the load or weight being lifted)

Who is the famous scientist who introduced the theoretical concept of periodization and what is the name of his theory?

Helpful Tip: Dr. Hans Selye introduced the General Adaptation Syndrome. It has 3 components which are the shock(workout stimulus), adaptation(muscular fitness), and avoid exhaustion(plateau and overtraining) by changing the stimulus.

What are the 6 PHASES of Periodization:

Helpful Tip:

1) Preparatory: emphasis on technique and posture

2) Hypertrophy: emphasis on high volume and low intensity; this is the base training

3) Strength: overload with intensity and begin specificity training

4) Power: speed, force and top performance technique

5) Maintenance: lower intensity and increase volume

6) Transition: physical and mental recovery
