Rollover image showing closed v-brake with instructions, opposite a released v-brake

V brakes have been common in recent years on mountain bikes. They are a modification of the cantilever brake. To release a V brake, squeeze the arms together, as pictured, then lift the cable out of the cross piece. Release the arms, and the brake should spring open, allowing you to remove the wheel unincumbered.

Roll your mouse over the image to see the brake released.
