Objective:
The objective of this assignment was to make us familiar with different ArcMap
environments. As a result, the deliverable included a map representing pan
evaporation of different stations in the state of New Mexico.
Methodology:
The
assignment was completed using shape files for the counties of New Mexico and
pan evaporation stations. First, new map was created, and the metadata was
edited under map document properties with relevant information. Then, a
base-map was added from the drop-down menu with a small plus (+) sign. I
selected the topo map for my base-map. The pan evaporation data and New Mexico
shape files were then added into the map with the add data tool. Then the
symbology for the pan evaporation data was edited from the layer’s properties.
The annual values for the pan evaporation was selected with 8 classes under
graduated quantities. The template option was used to change the symbol design
of the stations. The station names were included in the map from the labels
option and by selecting “Label features in this layer”. The labels option
allows to change the fonts, color, etc. of the stations. The statistics of the
pan evaporation data could be explored from the “open attribute table” option
after right clicking the layer. It shows various properties of stations, such
as; area, maximum, minimum, monthly evaporation, etc. After this, new data
frame was added to represent New Mexico with respect to the entire United
States. The graph of pan evaporation data was added using the add create graph
option. Different option in values filed represented different data. The graph
was then added to the layout for the deliverables. The final layout was then
created by moving the maps and graph in suitable position and adding legends,
scale and name.
