Contract Between The Faculty And Student

The use of the world wide web changes how faculty and students interact.  Obviously, based on my use of the web to support traditional faculty-student support services and teaching, I feel that the web can improve the thoroughness of teacher-student interactions.

Despite these improvements, it is imperative that some aspects of the traditional approach to teaching need to be retained.  One such aspect is the use of the course outline as a contract between the lecturer and student for the content of the course, the format of the lectures, the assignments due, the number of exams, and a summary of all components of student assessment for grading purposes.

To fulfill this important contractual arrangement between us, I need you to,

read this document,
print it,
initialize all components in the squares provided,
sign the form, and
then submit the form to me to place on file.

This will be my documentation that you are aware of all matters that pertain to this course, and most importantly, that you understand the need to study, and complete and submit assignments on the dates specified.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As a student in PEP535 - Exercise Biochemistry, I understand the following characteristics and requirements of this course;

[  ] I need to print and sign this contract, and then submit it to the lecturer.

[  ] I need to read the assigned readings.

[  ] I need to bring all distributed readings to each class.

[  ] I need to bring a calculator to each class.

[  ] I need to check the class website at least 1 hour prior to coming to class to check on any new information.  I also understand that some lectures may not be posted to the website until the afternoon prior to class.

[  ] I need to print the slide summaries and bring them to each class to use them as a note pad.

[  ] Once printed, I need to review the slide summaries in preparation for the lecture.

[  ] I need to bring all prior handouts to each class.

[  ] I need to start working on the presentation as soon as possible during the semester.  This may require that I work on a topic that has not yet been covered in class.

[  ] I need to prepare for the exams continuously throughout the course by maintaining class reading and revising class handouts and lecture notes.

[  ] I understand the requirements for borrowing textbooks from the EPL, as described in the course outline, and will adhere to them.

[  ] I need to be involved in class discussions.  Although this is a non-graded component of the class, it will help all class members as well as myself in being able to verbalize my understanding of concepts.  It will also reveal what I do and do not know on certain topics, which will help me in my study of the material in preparation for exams.
