POST-MODERNISM
A Theory Based on a Rejection:
-
"Postmodern theory provides a critique of representation
and the modern belief that theory mirrors reality, taking instead 'perspectivist'
and 'relativist' positions that theories at best provide partial perspectives
on their object." (Best and Kellner, 1991)
--Post-modernism rejects modern theory as a total explanation.
-
"Postmodern theory rejects totalizing macro-perspectives
on society and history in favor of micropolitics. Post-modern theory also
rejects
modern assumptions of social coherence and notions of causality in
favor of multiplicity, plurality, and fragmentation." (Best and
Kellner, 1991)
--Foucalt (1973) refers to this quality when he writes " respect…differences."
The Post-Modern Approach to Social Reform:
-
"If indeed it is important to multiply and autonomize
forms of resistance to counter the numerous tentacles of power, it
is equally important to link these various struggles to avoid fragmentation.
The question becomes, how can we create a counter-hegemonic formation."
(Best and Kellner, 1991)
--By targeting micro structures of power, the macro-structures
of oppression will
be dismantled.
--Critical thought: "Free thought to enable one to think differently"
(Escobar, 1992).
