Course Description: This is an introductory algebra course to prepare students for intermediate algebra.  Simplifying and solving simple algebraic equations as well as graphing equations will be emphasized.

Prerequisites: A passing grade in Math 010 or a satisfactory score on the Math Placement Test.

Co-requisite: Math 100 Lab

 

Textbook and Materials:  Beginning and Intermediate Algebra, Second Edition.  Martin-Gay, K. Elayn, Prentice Hall, 2001.

Attendance Policy: Regular attendance is required and students are expected to arrive on time.  The instructor can drop a student from this class for excessive absences (5).

 

Grading Policy: Students may take this course for a letter grade (A,B,C or NC - no credit) or on a CR/NC (credit/no credit) basis.  Grading options can be changed through the third week of class.  Grades are based on homework, class assignments and tests.

Main Course Objectives:

Adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing real numbers.

Multiplying, dividing and simplifying expressions involving exponents.

Solving equations in one variable and using the method to solve applied problems.

Adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing and factoring polynomials.

Plotting points on Cartesian coordinate axes and graphing equations of the form y=mx+b.

Solving and graphing systems of linear equations.

Simplifying rational expressions.

Course Description: Arithmetic and Introductory Algebra Lab (1) is a pre-college mathematics laboratory emphasizing simplifying algebraic expressions, solving equations and graphing equations.

Attendance Policy: Math Lab is a one credit hour course, which is arranged at the discretion of the student and the instructor and the support services at UNM-Valencia Campus.  Failure to complete eleven of the fifteen activities will result in no credit for the course.  A student may be dropped from the class for excessive missed assignments at the discretion of the instructor.

 

Grading Policy: Students may take this course for a letter grade (A,B,C or NC - no credit) or on a CR/NC (credit/no credit) basis.  Grading options can be changed through the third week of class.  Grades are based on assignments.

 

A = 270-300 pts.

B = 240-269 pts.

C = 210-239 pts.

CR = 210-300 pts

NC = <210 pts.

The Math Lab provides the student with a selection of pedagogically sound learning experiences.  The student will choose and complete a variety of enrichment activities from a menu of possibilities which augment and enhance the learning in the regular classroom.  The student will have the opportunity to:

 

  1. Receive tutoring at the Student Enrichment Center.
  2. Write about mathematics and mathematics learning.
  3. Use computer software and calculators to learn about mathematics.
  4. Complete practice sheets and handouts.
  5. View videos and movies about education.
  6. Use manipulatives to explore pattern recognition and problem solving.

Worksheets:  These are specifically assigned from supplemental materials. – 20 pts.

 

Play a game: Scrabble, Battleship, Keep score for bowling, Yahtzee or other games that you can explain how math is used.  Submit your scoresheet and write a few sentences about how this improved your math skills.  – 10 pts each, limit 3

 

Computer Software in DS-9: Hot Dog Stand, Learning Plus, Building Perspectives, Math Blaster, etc.  – 20 pts. per hour

 

Internet Sites: Math related.  Email the class a short paragraph with your reaction to the site. (i.e., user friendliness, quality of instruction, topics covered, etc.) – 20 pts.

 

Web CT: TBA – 20 pts.

 

Tutoring for this class at SEC – 20 pts per hour

 

Attend Math Anxiety or Computer Basics Workshop: Sign up at SEC – 20 pts per session

 

Write Your Math Biography:  Write a minimum of two pages describing your experiences with math. – 20 pts.

 

Research a Mathematician: Write a minimum of 2 pages on any mathematician. – 30 pts.

 

Create A Class Presentation On A Math Topic: This can be a group activity.  Please consult the instructor before preparing the presentation. – 20-50 pts.

 

View a Video:  Must be concerning math or education.  Submit a brief summary.  Stand and Deliver recommended. – 20 pts.

Other activities as assigned or approved. – 10-20 pts.
