2012.91.27, green glaze jar; Han Dynasty (206 B.C.–A.D. 220)
Eason Eige Collection; photo by B. Bernard
The body of this jar is decorated with two
taotie masks.
On bronze jars of the same
period, such masks held ring handles. The masks on the jar were
merely decorative, but evoked the aesthetics of the more valued bronze pieces.
The photo below shows a close-up of the decorative mask.
