Glazeware: A Chinese Gift to the World

Jun ware jar

Jun ware jar
2012.91.66, Jun ware jar, Jin or Yuan dynasty (A.D. 1115–1368)
Eason Eige Collection; photo by B. Bernard

Look closely at the upper part of this jar, and you'll see a frog (to the left) and the head of a snake (to the right). Like the jar you just saw, this one has blue glaze over brown. As a result the blue looks darker than on most jun ware vessels, but notice the areas of concentrated blue glaze near the top of the jar. There you'll see the typical jun sky blue.

The jar is 8 1/4 inches (21 cm) tall. The next photo provides a close-up of the applied figures at the top of the jar.
