Glazeware: A Chinese Gift to the World

A brown glaze ewer

Honey glaze ewer
2012.91.82, brown glaze gourd ewer; Tang Dynasty (A.D. 618–907)
Eason Eige Collection; photo by B. Bernard

The body of this vessel has scalloped sides, imitating a melon. The handle probably imitates twisted leather handles. Such allusions to other materials were no doubt intended to increase the sophistication of the piece, while maintaining an overall simplicty of form and color. The result is an elegantly understated vessel that would have appealed to many Tang dynasty collectors.
