Dear Dr. Search Coordinator by NAME,

It is with great pleasure that I submit my application packet for the position of Assistant Professor in Exercise Science at the University of NAME. I am currently working on my dissertation and expect to complete all requirements for my doctorate degree in Exercise Physiology by this May.

The first paragraph of the letter will have a self-introduction and WHY you are interested in the job.During my academic career here at the University of New Mexico, I have had the opportunity to co-teach Fundamentals of Exercise Physiology with Dr. Len Kravitz, as well as deliver guest lectures on body composition, muscle contraction theory, and exercise nutrition to graduate and undergraduate students. I have also been an instructor of adult physical fitness classes for the Employee Health Promotion Program since YEAR. I feel my interests in Exercise Science match very closely the qualifications you are seeking with your position.

THIS PARAGRAPH SHOULD SPECIFICALLY ADDRESS WHAT THE UNIVERSITY IS LOOKING FOR WITH THEIR POSITION OPENING AND HOW YOUR QUALIFICATIONS REALLY FIT THEIR NEEDS
Additionally, I have worked in clinical and laboratory settings throughout my advanced degree programs. I have experience in a hospital-based cardiac rehabilitation program, as well as clinical and research stress testing. This variety of experiences has allowed me to become proficient in the use of treadmills, cycle and arm ergometers, metabolic analyzers, pulmonary function systems, electrocardiograms, various body composition assessment methodologies, manual and tonometric blood pressure monitoring equipment, urine and blood analysis, and isokinetic dynomometry. As a graduate assistant I have really enjoyed mentoring students and have had the pleasure to direct several student learning experiences in the exercise physiology laboratory.

SOME UNIVERSITIES WILL WANT TO KNOW AN IDEA OF WHAT RESEARCH YOU HAVE DONE.
I feel fortunate that I have been able to participate in a wide variety of research projects while at UNM. Many of these projects were grant-funded, faculty-sponsored research endeavors, while others were for dissertations and student-based research. My role in these research projects has varied, depending on the topic of interest and size of research team.

THE NEXT COUPLE OF PARAGRAPHS CAN HIGHLIGHT SOME OF YOUR UNIQUE SKILLS, ABILITY TO COLLABORATE WITH OTHERS, AND ABILITY TO ADVISE/MENTOR STUDENTS
As an experienced user of both IBM-compatible and Apple computers, I am well-versed in the use of PowerPoint, the entire Microsoft Office suite of software, as well as website creation and maintenance. I have frequently utilized PowerPoint for classroom and other presentations. I enthusiastically worked with one of our Exercise Science faculty in establishing a computer learning lab for exercise physiology students that resulted in outstanding participation and learning experiences for the students. From all reports, the students found the interactive software to be a fun way to solidify their grasp of theoretical concepts. My computer skills have been further enhanced through the use of the many automated data collection devices we have at our disposal; some require analog-to-digital interfaces and data manipulation subsequent to collection and prior to analysis.

In addition to my research experiences, I have had the opportunity to collaborate on several writing projects with faculty and colleagues at UNM. This collaboration has led to two articles that are currently in press, poster presentations at national ACSM conferences, as well as slide and poster presentations at Southwest regional ACSM conferences. I also was fortunate to receive a small grant ($2,000) to cover expenses associated with one of these presentations.

I see this position at UNIVERSITY NAME as an exciting opportunity to contribute to the future success of exercise science with a dynamic, progressive group of professionals. I thank you for the opportunity to submit this application and look forward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely,
