In this assignment you will learn to make line graphs in Excel.
In the next class you will turn in a printout of the graph you make, as well as your saved spreadsheet.
First, you designate the data to be used in the graph, and then you choose the kind of graph you want. You can modify the graph in many ways.
Open the 'Examples' Spreadsheet on your diskette. Go to the Life Table worksheet.
Copy the Age Category variable and each age class. Paste this column into the 'Assignment#2b' worksheet.
In the column to the right of this, create a new variable and call it 'Rep. Value', standing for Reproductive Value. You should have something like this:
In the Rep. Value column enter the results of the fertility modification table from assignment #2a. You can use copy and paste for this.
The format for the graph data is always the same. The leftmost column of data will be represented on the horizontal axis. All subsequent columns will be represented on the vertical axis.
Starting at the top left, block the variable names and the data.
Click on the Chart Wizard icon on the top portion of the tool bar.
Move the mouse pointer onto the spreadsheet area. Notice that the pointer is now a small plus sign with three bars next to it.
Click once anywhere on the spreadsheet. A 'Chart Wizard' dialogue box will appear. The first step asks you for the data ranges. You have already entered this by blocking the data you want graphed, so you can just click the NEXT button.
Next you are asked to select a graph type. There are many different kinds, but for now you want the LINE graph. Click once on this box. Click NEXT.
Next you are asked to choose a Line Chart format. The default is fine, so click NEXT.
You are now asked for some information about the organization of our data. This is unimportant for right now. Click NEXT.
You are now asked to add titles and a legend. First, you don't want a legend since you are only plotting one line. Choose NO under where it says 'Add a Legend?'
Enter the following title in the Chart Title field 'Effects of Fertility Modification'.
Under Axis Titles, Category X enter the phrase 'Age Category'. The X-axis almost always refers to information described along the HORIZONTAL axis of the graph.
Under Axis Titles, Category Y enter 'Reproductive Value'. The Y-axis is almost always the ascending or vertical axis in a graph.
Click FINISH. Your graph should look like this:
Double click on the graph so that it is highlighted in bold. Press the Print icon on the toolbar and get the printout.
